Who else is fed up with swearing on MN?

I have been trying to have this discussion on another thread, but don't want to hijack it further.

I am thoroughly sick of excessive swearing on MN. I am sick of encountering posters with sweary names (not least because I have to hide MN as soon as the children come into the room).

MNHQ, could you please look at this again? Every time I mention this on threads, I am told that I have a cat's bum face (which is immensely irritating) and to eff off to Nethuns - yet I loathe the huggy/kissy/hunny stuff, and detest moderation. We are all adults and don't need to be censored. However, part of being an adult surely means having some consideration for other people too?

Here is Justine in May 2005:

"Hi all,
We've had a few complaints about obscene language on the boards. Our policy on this is that we would appreciate it if people would keep foul and abusive language to a minimum and that if you feel it necessary to swear to make your point then use asterisks please [...] we don't want to be over-prudish about this - we're not talking minor offenses here - and sometimes (parking attendant, gp receptionist annecdotes etc etc) we agree that nothing else but a swear word will do but it's a fair point that lots of members look at mumsnet with kids who may be early readers at their side and as the saying goes... less is more sometimes, so if you could use your discretion it would be much appreciated.

Ta very much."

That seems eminently sensible - but MN seems to have somehow slithered into a site for sweary people only.

Am I the only person who is utterly fed up with it?

OP posts:
BupcakesandHaunting · 11/10/2011 13:06

Eh? How is referring to OP by her intials bullying? Just because it happens to carry the same initials as blow job? Which isn't even swearing? Confused

Right Sue. One Love by Bob Marley. From the top.

lemonbalm · 11/10/2011 13:07

Madeleine Bunting in The Guardian today on civility.

It is the Guardian.

Maybe she's the OP. Grin

SuePurblybilt · 11/10/2011 13:08

Oh no, hold on. Is singing an in-joke? Can anyone rap instead?

lemonbalm · 11/10/2011 13:09

Personally I can't ever tell whether that kind of disingenuous post "Eh? How can that be bullying???" is genuinely disingenuous or not.

BupcakesandHaunting · 11/10/2011 13:09

Going against the raison d'etre of this thread, but, Madeleine Bunting is a cunt name. It sounds like a fuck-awful gift shop what you'd get in Bridport, selling twee owl napkin rings and "ditsy" oilcloths.

VampiresWearBlackVelvet · 11/10/2011 13:09

who lowered the tone to blow jobs?

AitchTwoOh · 11/10/2011 13:10

lol

SoupDragon · 11/10/2011 13:10

bupcakes, because it it was done deliberately to poke fun. It even got bolded to make it clearer.

AitchTwoOh · 11/10/2011 13:10

to buppers lp, i mean.

SayGhoulNowSayWitch · 11/10/2011 13:10

Ouch! Chaos, that was my nose! Behave!

BupcakesandHaunting · 11/10/2011 13:11

lemonbalm, how is it disingenous? I am asking a perfectly legitimate question. I've seen posters referred to by their initials a million times. Someone else has made the link between BJ and blow job and has made an accusation of bullying.

BupcakesandHaunting · 11/10/2011 13:12

So just the bolding and use of the actual initials, SoupDragon?

lemonbalm · 11/10/2011 13:13

Honestly, I can't. Ask someone else. Or just think about it for a minute and a half.

SoupDragon · 11/10/2011 13:13

Imagine your child is called Bethany Jones. A gang of children in school keep referring to her as BJ. Apart from the fact that you should have thought about this before naming your child, do you a) think it is acceptable b) think this gang are displaying traits of bullying ?

thisisyesterday · 11/10/2011 13:13

it doesn't bother me.

i would say that if you are looking at an adult site, that you know contains swearing then you just don't do it with a child that can reaad looking over your shoulder do you

i am getting a bit sick of this whole "my child deserves to do what s/he likes so everyone else better change how they behave" kind of attitude

your child. you deal with it.

SayGhoulNowSayWitch · 11/10/2011 13:13

There was once a long thread about swearing
That descended into ambiguous lairing
The OP was distressed
Til Bjups bared her breasts
And we all agreed to be more caring.

lemonbalm · 11/10/2011 13:14

Or do you think the kid is just a whiney complainer for saying she doesn't want to be known as BJ all day every day so no-one ever listens to what she says?

VampiresWearBlackVelvet · 11/10/2011 13:14

SoupDragon - that's preposterous!

Please don't start spouting all that bollocks because it just aint true. Bloody Hell, the OP herself has capitalised the B & the J on her own name.

Everyone's name is shortened to just initials when we can't be arsed typing the whole name - you know that surely.

Get your mind out the gutter and back on the point.

lemonbalm · 11/10/2011 13:15

Disingenuous?

SoupDragon · 11/10/2011 13:16

I didn't make the link, Bupcakes

FanjoForTheMuahahammaries Tue 11-Oct-11 10:32:32
hehe "BJ"

BupcakesandHaunting · 11/10/2011 13:18

I do think that in a playground situation, it would be a different matter entirely. On a message board where posters are constantly referred to by intials, for time-saving purposes, it's not the same thing.

In fact, I'm not sure why I'm explaining this. I can't believe that anyone would that that's bullying.

BupcakesandHaunting · 11/10/2011 13:20

Yeah but even so, it's not her real name. It's a username for a forum. It's hardly the same as having your real name ripped to shreds.

And I know. I had my real name ripped to shreds for my entire primary school life. So, like, can all of you who regularly hate on my MN name just pack it in? Or else.

SayGhoulNowSayWitch · 11/10/2011 13:24

Does that mean I can't change to my Friday name any more?

:(

AitchTwoOh · 11/10/2011 13:24

we'll have to put it to a vote, buppers, obv. if the majority of us still want to go ahead and hate on your name and show your feelings no consideration then you'll just have to suck that up, because that's how we roll here on MN, you see? Wink

BupcakesandHaunting · 11/10/2011 13:26

Bah.

My name invites all kids of hostility. Good job I've got the arse hide of a rhino even though I did change it once because of bjullying bjitches.
