Who else is fed up with swearing on MN?

I have been trying to have this discussion on another thread, but don't want to hijack it further.

I am thoroughly sick of excessive swearing on MN. I am sick of encountering posters with sweary names (not least because I have to hide MN as soon as the children come into the room).

MNHQ, could you please look at this again? Every time I mention this on threads, I am told that I have a cat's bum face (which is immensely irritating) and to eff off to Nethuns - yet I loathe the huggy/kissy/hunny stuff, and detest moderation. We are all adults and don't need to be censored. However, part of being an adult surely means having some consideration for other people too?

Here is Justine in May 2005:

"Hi all,
We've had a few complaints about obscene language on the boards. Our policy on this is that we would appreciate it if people would keep foul and abusive language to a minimum and that if you feel it necessary to swear to make your point then use asterisks please [...] we don't want to be over-prudish about this - we're not talking minor offenses here - and sometimes (parking attendant, gp receptionist annecdotes etc etc) we agree that nothing else but a swear word will do but it's a fair point that lots of members look at mumsnet with kids who may be early readers at their side and as the saying goes... less is more sometimes, so if you could use your discretion it would be much appreciated.

Ta very much."

That seems eminently sensible - but MN seems to have somehow slithered into a site for sweary people only.

Am I the only person who is utterly fed up with it?

I agree with bupcakes, there are far more harmful abuses on MN (such as the poster who made fun of my DD's regression). Maybe that's why swearing doesn't bother me that much.

VampiresWearBlackVelvet · 11/10/2011 12:44

BupCakes - you are on my top dog list for that reason alone :)

PinotScreechio · 11/10/2011 12:48

Buppers :)

FanjoForTheMuahahammaries · 11/10/2011 12:48

Plus a lot of the truly nasty posters are called things like fluffymummyhunny

SoupDragon · 11/10/2011 12:48

"I've been here for 5 years as well, and MN has always been like this. I don't know why you seem to think it's got worse, Aitch?"

LOL.
I have been here considerably longer and trust me, it has got worse :)

AitchTwoOh · 11/10/2011 12:48

no, you are an absolute darling, buppers, and your name is funny... it's not one that causes me any bother at all. i guess my only problem is that if your name is okay, then that's the thin end of the wedge. didn't mean to make you sigh, meant to make you smile, hence the wink. Smile

TOP TIP - TOP TIP - TOP TIP - TOP TIP - TOP TIP

For those with inquisitive children wandering around:

If you are on a Windows PC/laptop and you want to hide what you're looking at, press the flaggy window key together with 'M'. This will instantly minimise all your windows.

AitchTwoOh · 11/10/2011 12:51

agree soupy, it's definitely got worse. but, meh, it's got bigger and all that. but yes, the idea that it hasn't changed in five years doesn't stand up to scrutiny at all.

BupcakesandHaunting · 11/10/2011 12:52

If you want to make me smile, try jiggling me tits or summat. I'm past all of this winking/coyness now. I'm too old for that.

BecauseImWorthIt · 11/10/2011 12:54

Well that's also impossible to prove, isn't it?

IMO, in the 5 years since I (and the OP) have been here, I don't think it's changed.

'Cunting Sainsbury's' was a thread in January 2007. (And yes, I am that sad that I have searched to find that out Grin)

iirc plenty of people thought that was beyond the pale at the time and were not ridiculed for expressing that pov. plus, that was a first, but it was not to be the last.

BupcakesandHaunting · 11/10/2011 12:58
BecauseImWorthIt · 11/10/2011 12:59

Aitch - I'm not ridiculing anybody. I get that people are offended by it. But the same discussion was had at that time as well.

And so it goes on - ad nauseum.

Anyway, I'm off now. This is irritating and upsetting me, which isn't what MN is all about.

Hullygully · 11/10/2011 13:02

Let's go and talk about them in the bogs.

SoupDragon · 11/10/2011 13:02

So, a poster starts a thread to ask for consideration wrt swearing, people start deliberately referring her by the initials of her posting name which happen to be an acronym for a sex act and you don't think it is bullying behaviour? Can you imagine doing that to someone in real life?

BupcakesandHaunting · 11/10/2011 13:02

BIWI, I don't think that Aitch was accusing you specifically of ridiculing, I think that she was referring to the general tone on these threads (everyone ridiculing the OP)

I think. Confused

Don't be upset.

I haven't had to do this for a long time, God knows why because it's been fucking barking around here lately, but I WILL change into my cheesecloth kaftan and get my bong out in a minute. Chiiiiiiiiiill, guys.

Peace out.

Hullygully · 11/10/2011 13:04

The prob with "bullying" is that there is no one defined interpretation.

We need a definition thread.

BrainSurgeon · 11/10/2011 13:04

I don't like it.
But I dislike censorship more.

SuePurblybilt · 11/10/2011 13:04

Is it time to sing yet?

Hullygully · 11/10/2011 13:05

Heading that way, Sue.

What about a nice rousing chorus of Four and Twenty Virgins?

SoupDragon · 11/10/2011 13:05

"Anyway, I'm off now. This is irritating and upsetting me, which isn't what MN is all about."

Perhaps you should fuck off to fluffywuffy Netmums then [arf]

Wink
AitchTwoOh · 11/10/2011 13:05

god, yes, bupcakes, absolutely. i was never in a MILLION years saying that you were ridiculing anyone, BIWI. never seen you do that in my whole time on MN, wouldn't enter my head to accuse you of such a thing.

my point wrt ridicule was that after cunting sainsbos there was an uproar iirc and the mood was not one for ridiculing anyone with a problem with the swearing, but that it is now. (not that you do it, of course). apols for not being clear enough.
