Think if I shut up thread will last a lot longerGrin

TheSecondOfHerName · 16/05/2018 22:08

callitwhatyouwill sorry to hear about the added drama and unpleasantness.

Thank you for the recommendation. DS1 has terrible sleep issues which are getting worse as A-levels approach. He is 18, so might try that. Possibly a better option than the zopliclone his GP has given him.

Teenmum60 · 16/05/2018 22:11

callitwhatyouwill ..I have a DD where there have been friendship issues too and thought it had come to an end ...but DD quiet today and then she mentioned some issues within the group (The girls are on exam leave but most getting in at 8 am on the exam days). No words of wisdom other than to just put the remarks behind her and focus on tomorrow.

DF being a total nightmare telling DD not to revise when she is with him or he'll allow 30 mins of revision (and this morning cleaning out the Hedgehog had to take preference over revision because of that's what he insisted on). Just feel so sorry for DD ..he is such a control freak.

BlueBelle123 · 16/05/2018 22:11

Thanks for the new thread mmzz you are an example that practice makes perfect Grin

DS has gone to bed all ready for chemistry and CS tomorrow!

I think there is a direct correlation between controversial exams and how quickly the thread fills up......lets hope this one is slow to fill up!!

Sostenueto · 16/05/2018 22:13

callitwhatyouwill tell dd to come off social media at least during exam period. I'm lucky cos dgd turned her back on social media years ago though her little friendship group have their own private chat thingy. So sorry to hear about nastiness. Flowers for your dd.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 16/05/2018 22:14

All sixth forms are selective to a certain extent. At least you can keep as many offers open as you want, easier than for universities! Must make planning class sizes and subject availability tricky for them, though.
Imagine offering say, business studies, getting 20 applicants, but only 4 of them turn up in September. Can you afford to run it with only 4? Which teacher would be teaching it, a subject specialist? With perhaps a GCSE class or 2? Glad it's not my problem.

Sostenueto · 16/05/2018 22:15

teenmum Flowers some men are..........

dogzdinner · 16/05/2018 22:17

DS has been watching primrose kitten videos this evening. Chemistry is not a strong subject for him so I hope tomorrow's paper is reasonably straightforward.

He has much less going on than all your DCs by the sounds of things. Only biology, chemistry and drama this week.

TheSecondOfHerName · 16/05/2018 22:22

EllenJane I've wondered that too. Three of the sixth forms near me manage to offer subjects with smaller uptake by joining together and teaching students from all three sixth forms together after school at one venue. Logistically difficult, but if your child is desperate to take that subject then it's better than nothing.

Sostenueto · 16/05/2018 22:22

Good luck to all for exams tomorrow. I'm driving dgd to school tomorrow ( round trip of 78 miles) because exam am. She doesn't want to arrive hot and breathless rushing to get to school from train station. Next week I got to do it 4 timesSad. I think she is far too pampered.

callitwhatyouwill · 16/05/2018 22:23

mmzz I'd like to take her phone away but she uses it for Seneca and Tassomai. We're trying to keep her buoyed-up and positive - hoping to persuade her to use it as a way to be determined, rather than deflated and demoralised.

Stickerrocks - Thanks for tip - I'll go and look that one up Grin. You're right, it's painful and it makes me sad that this individual is having an impact at such an important time in DD's life. I believe that jealousy may play a part.

LooseAtTheSeams - Brilliant advice and I've now done that Wink

AChickenCalledKorma - Ahh displacement activity - I was the queen of that at university. My room was never so clean as when I needed to do an assignment GrinI was a crammer and an all-nighter-the-night-before type of student! I know all the tricks so can spot it in DD - she can't get away with it Wink

mmzz · 16/05/2018 22:26

Thanks for the thread title appreciation. My ambitions are shrinking. Getting that almost right is my main achievement today, apart from cooking a curry for dinner that DH actually liked.
My only mistake (with the title) was the capital F on flashcards. Unless someone who actually got taught SPAG can tell me otherwise?

OP posts:
slinkyme · 16/05/2018 22:26

Mmzz thank you for the new thread. Love the title.

Blimey this thread(s) nice fast. Kept waiting to get to the end of the previous one so I could post on a comment made earlier. And i think 30-40 posts later have got to the end. No doubt will have moved on again by the time I post this.

Callit just wanted to say that what you said on previous thread really hit home. I too was sensing it but chose not to put it into words. Did make me feel uncomfortable. I am sure nothing was intentional and that this thread can continue to be supportive.

Sorry to hear about the nastiness of other DC - it's so uncalled for. I hope your DD can rise above it. Definitely switch off social media if at all possible.

Chemistry and Latin tomorrow for us. DD has been revising chemistry solidly today. Has had no time to relook at Latin. She revised loads over the week before Exams started and will refresh at lunchtime tomorrow before the exam. Hope it will be enough. Just want to get through tomorrow and the back to back tough exams will take a pause.

Sostenueto · 16/05/2018 22:28

Dgd has 3 offers only because school said everyone should gave a backup due to last year 2 good students failed to get English language grade required and school wont take retakes even though both students had A*s in most of their subjects. Neither had a back up offer and couldn't get a place elsewhere as too late.

mmzz · 16/05/2018 22:28

Could you let her use your phone for those things? Or turn off notifications for Facebook / Instagram / whichever platform the bullies are using to get their messages to her?

OP posts:
callitwhatyouwill · 16/05/2018 22:29

Sostenueto That's so very kind of you and thanks Smile. Thankfully, she doesn't do FB or social media but they do have a small group-chat thing for revision-talk etc. We're keeping an eye on it but want to focus on positive energy for the exams - so hard but there you go.

Gallows humour seems to work at the moment Wink

slinkyme · 16/05/2018 22:31

Sostenueto you are an incredibly supportive dgm. Your dgd is so lucky to have you.

Sostenueto · 16/05/2018 22:35

Slinkyme sorry but apart from one comment made by another infrequent poster I certainly haven't got a whiff of what you are referring to. I maybe noseblind because I believe this thread is very balanced. I have a rant about Give and the present government because I believe the government should stop interfering with education but that's only my opinion. I just hope no one has misinterpreted some of my comments.ConfusedHmm

AlwaysHiding · 16/05/2018 22:36

I’m here also 🙂

DD in bed, has given up with chemistry revision. It’s one of her worst subjects and she hates it with a passion. She’ll do what she can, but she’ll be glad when it’s over (as will I).

I’m feeling very unwell this evening. I think the stress of managing poor DD’s health, plus providing revision support is taking its toll. So I’m off to bed too as quite a bit of parent taxiing tomorrow with two exams.

Hope poorly DC are doing okay and those who suffer anxiety are managing to keep things under control as best they can.

Sostenueto · 16/05/2018 22:36

Thank you slinky and callitwhatyouwillFlowers

BlueBelle123 · 16/05/2018 22:37

Callit the DC concerned is probably so stressed about the upcoming exam and their shortcomings that their way of coping it to lash out at those that they know will do well (your DD). Totally unacceptable behaviour and I hope it doesn't put your DD off her stride!

Sostenueto · 16/05/2018 22:37

If I have offended unintentionally I'm very sorryBlush

sandybayley · 16/05/2018 22:38

@Sostenueto - I think there was a bit of sniping about different types of school. Hence lots of us 'declared' what type our DC attend. Nothing you've posted I think.

slinkyme · 16/05/2018 22:41

It's all good sostuento. It was just an undercurrent - not one post or poster. Water under the bridge.

Hope you and DC get rest tonight and best of luck to all DC with exams tomorrow. 2 more sleeps till the weekend and no exams. Yay!

slinkyme · 16/05/2018 22:41

Sorry misspelt Sostenueto x
