Total silence in the car on the way to Chemistry this morning with 2DS. They both want to do Chemistry at A Level so this is an important one for them. Was worried about traffic as Windsor has road closures this morning for the wedding rehearsal but sailed through.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 17/05/2018 08:39

loving the recipe for plum pudding which is obviously going to be needed for AQA Chemistry today Grin. I may have irritated DD last night with "helpful" egg suggestions as part of last minute chemistry revision, but she left the house this morning telling ME not to worry as it would all be fine Shock

idsisatwat · 17/05/2018 08:41

Have been lurking on some of the other threads, but they move so quickly!
DD has chemistry today, is doing triple science. She should be ok, has been doing a fair amount of revision and went through all the topics on Seneca last night.
I think I’m more worried about her exams than I ever was about my own.

Cherryburn · 17/05/2018 08:48

Teen and Tired it must be so difficult with unsupportive exes, it would drive me to distraction.

DH is supportive/encouraging but totally uninvolved e.g. has no idea what exams are on which days etc unless he asks me. I actually think it works quite well for DS as he can chat to his dad about football with no references as at all to revision/exams. I do find the load quite heavy sometimes though...

Sandy suit will have to be purchased here too. I actually bought him one last year for my FIL's funeral and welled up when he came out of the fitting room in M&S! Sadly I know it will be too small now as he has grown yet again. M&S no longer an option as their longest leg length is too short for him (he's 6' 5") so I will probably be crying at the expense this time round!

MinaPaws · 17/05/2018 08:49

Sent DS 2 off to chemistry (his worst subject) this morning with about 5 dry Special K flakes inside him which was all he could manage. I did make him a fresh banana milkshake too and he managed most of that. Just can't eat when nervous. He's tried and tried to revise for Chemistry but it just won't go in. He'll pass but for the amount of work he's done I know he'll be deflated if he only scrapes a C (or whatever numbers Cs are these days.)

JugglingMummyof2 · 17/05/2018 08:56

@Looseattheseams Yes please to assistance with Eng Lang.
I'm feeling sick - hope the paper is a fair one.

northender · 17/05/2018 09:03

Wow, these threads are fast moving!! I haven't read back fully from yesterday morning, ds had PE paper 1 yesterday and again it seemed "okay". He was pleasantly surprised by the 9 mark question & feels he did alright on it.
Chemistry today and he seemed reasonably calm when he left. He studied for triple science all the way though but school offered him a late drop to combined due to the amount of work he had missed and not caught up. It helped him massively as he was on the verge of giving up completely at the time.
He needs a 6 in Maths and 4s in Geography and English for college entrance. He was predicted all 7s & 8s but we have revised that in our minds since all his health issues. So long as he gets what he needs to move on to A levels, I'm happy. He wants more , but we'll see.

TeresasGreen · 17/05/2018 09:10

Poor DD headed off to school really early today. She looked worried for the first time. Sad

I’ve just read the article in today’s guardian about how awful the stress is on DC now. School referrals for MH support up massively etc. Most striking was the contact number for the Samaritans at the end.

Teenmum60 · 17/05/2018 09:17

@tiredand44 Its really tiring isn't it...DF is narcissistic (not just my opinion). I've been fairly laid back with revision and DD has worked reasonably hard but I had hoped for a consistent approach..

Dropped DD off with Chemistry book open on lap on way into school..she said that they all stand outside the exam hall with their books doing last minute revision. She seemed Ok this is a subject where if she applied herself she could do well but the exam could go either way.

Interesting article in the Guardian about GCSE's Kenneth Clarke questioning why the children take exams at 16 now school leaving age has risen to 18...I think somewhat agree and maybe some core exams should just be taken at 16.

Teenmum60 · 17/05/2018 09:18

@TeresasGreen snap!

hmcAsWas · 17/05/2018 09:18

Goodness 5 pages on the new thread already!

Glad to hear that Impossiblegirl's dd is now back to full health, and sorry to hear of Teenmums sabotaging ex Shock and Callit's dd's troubles with nasty undermining 'friends'. When will this ridiculousness among teenage girls come to an end? They do grow out of it eventually don't they? Teenmum - I imagine that your dd is well enough prepared that her dad's attempts to curtail her revising won't impact. Can't believe him though - he's being an idiot

So good luck to all doing exams today. I see a lot of you have dc who are dreading Chemistry in particular - so I feel like I am in good company. Drove dd to school whilst she sat glowering menacingly (anger is her 'go to' response to fear and dread). She then told me she is certainly going to fail - she hasn't managed to cover all topics thoroughly; just ran out of time and energy. Think I said all the right empathetic things about it not mattering as long as she does her best - make it up on the second paper and reflect upon how many exams to date have gone relatively well (i.e. focus on the positives). Still - she looked like she was going to the gallows when she got out of the car. Wish I had found tassomai earlier - it would have made the difference

Meh - its only one GCSE! [tries to persuade self]

And as the silver lining, Y9 ds is taking this all in and appreciating first hand just how much and how hard the prep for GCSEs are, and despite his inclination to laziness is resolving to get his head down early for revision when his time comes

hmcAsWas · 17/05/2018 09:19

Plus I know about tassomai now so will be signing him up at the start of Y11

sonnyboo · 17/05/2018 09:25

Wow, this thread is moving quickly! Good luck to those taking exams today. Seems to be mainly Chemistry?

hmcAsWas · 17/05/2018 09:27

Just read the Guardian article Sad

dogzdinner · 17/05/2018 09:43

That article is very sad reading. The whole thing has been very poorly managed by the sounds of things, they should have introduced it over a much longer period.

Also, I don't know why they still call them GCSEs when they're a completely different type of testing from previously. They seem to be more like O Levels.

Teenmum60 · 17/05/2018 09:49

MH is frightening - DD mentioned to me a few weeks back that HOY (10/11) stated that she refers 1 to 2 girls a month to the school counsellor, not just mental health ..and this is a school that doesn't really pressurise the girls.

I shivered when I read about the London school with the DC soiling himself during a mock exam Shock

slinkyme · 17/05/2018 10:03

Sandy we too have a running countdown on our fridge. Will be 16 to go by end of today.

Nervous today for the exams. DD knows her stuff but not sure she has revised enough. Felt comforted thought that she didn't have to know her Latin text off by heart. She said they have the text in the exam - they just need to understand it really well.

Important day at work too so a bag of nerves all round.

mmzz · 17/05/2018 10:06

Looseattheseams yes, English tips would be very welcome please!

hmcAsWas · 17/05/2018 10:17

link to guardian

Dd has lost 5lbs in the last fortnight and (unlike her mum) she was skinny to start with!

mmzz · 17/05/2018 10:17

From the Guardian :
students may be sitting up to 28 exams in the space of two or three weeks

What combination would you need to be doing to do that? What about he half-term holidays?

OP posts:
hmcAsWas · 17/05/2018 10:19

Yes the soiling himself thing got to me too Teenmum

brainmelt · 17/05/2018 10:23

I think the waiting is going to be the hardest part I agree mmzz!
