A new thread to take us through the exams

Twitter on the Edexcel igcse is v funny too! Much angst about measuring the height of a rhino's shoulder, growing spinach in space, and rabbits eating their own poo! Lots of moaning about huge swathes of the syllabus that they had actually revised coming up (which was one of DS's comments).

Sostenueto · 15/05/2018 19:12

According to the student room thread on aqa biology my dgd sat a completely different paperConfused a lot saying it didn't contain much biology and wording IG questions confusing. Lots of maths and loads fed up that lots of studying different parts and none if it came up. And yes, cf supposed to be on paper 2. Apparently there are petitions out already to lower grade boundaries as a lot of questions not relevant to syllabus?????ShockConfused

LooseAtTheSeams · 15/05/2018 19:15

The gcse tweets are very funny! Just phoned home and apparently biology was ok, pretty much as expected and he'd revised the right things. At least that's what DS has told DH and I'm not probing any further!
DS back in his den revising for RE tomorrow.

JugglingMummyof2 · 15/05/2018 19:16

delurking to make you smile.
DD was evacuated for a fire alarm in the middle of AQA Biology just as she was getting to grips with osmotic eggs - she was happy enough but surprised by all the stuff that wasn't on the paper. Third paper of the day and they were told if anyone spoke they would all be disqualified - like a three ring circus...

EdWinchester · 15/05/2018 19:16

Yes, Twitter has made me laugh out loud today.

Sostenueto · 15/05/2018 19:18

No good asking dgd anything else about exam cis as far as she is concerned it's done and no more thought to be wasted on it. ( mainly has this attitude to all exams done so far as if she thinks about it too much she is frightened she got things wrong) well just have to target my questions better in the 5 minutes she is Willing to talk about exam takenGrin

GallicosCats · 15/05/2018 19:19

Sostenueto my DD said pretty much the same thing. Mostly maths and food tech, and one question about embryo development they hadn't even been taught the terminology for.

Sostenueto · 15/05/2018 19:19

Omg jugglingmummyShock

Cherryburn · 15/05/2018 19:24

that they had revised not* coming up

hmcAsWas · 15/05/2018 19:31

That's excitement that you don't need in a middle of a paper JugglingMum

brainmelt · 15/05/2018 19:33

Nothing tomorrow for DS. Then Chemistry and Latin prose on Thursday.
I will check that Twitter feed...

AlexanderHamilton · 15/05/2018 19:33

Dd & her friends are very indignant about AQA Higher French.

Apparently she’s been learning completely the wrong pirouette technique for the last 8 years. Instead of practising her spotting so as not to get dizzy she should have been eating less salt, stopping smoking & practising standing on one leg according to the French reading paper.

Sostenueto · 15/05/2018 19:35

Cripes! Oh well. No good worrying obviously dgd didn't say much so as not to worry me. I hope she got the osmosis eggy question right. In other words hope she didn't f... Up too much with confusing wording, irrelevant questions and questions that are supposed to be in paper 2!Grin

Sostenueto · 15/05/2018 19:37

Grinalexander

JugglingMummyof2 · 15/05/2018 19:41

I was getting concerned as she is normally really quick at texting when a paper is finished and 30 minutes after the exam should have finished I was feeling..... concerned.
Then the call came through saying they all had to leave , wait and go back in and finish. Apparently it is marked on their papers that exam was disrupted - she is hopefully they might get a bonus mark Grin

Oratory1 · 15/05/2018 19:48

Nothing tomorrow yay !! Just hope DS can get his head down and revise for the two on Thursday and not switch off too much - then a well earned break Thursday night with four days off after that (well apart from school )

Stickerrocks · 15/05/2018 19:52

Alex perhaps your DH can help her perfect her technique in the caravan. Are you missing them?

Gibble1 · 15/05/2018 19:53

We’re dealing with a very upset DD here. Yesterday’s RS paper had questions that they hadn’t covered. Apparently the paper was sat by a teacher who also came out and said that they couldn’t answer the questions on Holy Week as not covered.
Today’s AQA double science paper was “a mess”. Lots of maths. Lots of physics which they were given unnecessary formulae for. Lots of stuff that she didn’t know and hadn’t been taught.
Am upset for her. She has good grades- predicted 6-9s across the board. Needs 7-8s to get not her preferred college. Feels like she will get 4-5s if the exams continue like this.
Mocks results have all been 6-8s.
Dare I look at Twitter?

Sostenueto · 15/05/2018 19:59

Actually just looked at twitter and comments do make you laugh but have worried me a bit, but I am a born worrier!.

Gibble1 · 15/05/2018 20:00

Am very confused now! You’re all saying your DCs had biology but hers is labelled synergy. Wtf is that all about? It sounded like a maths exam 😱

AlexanderHamilton · 15/05/2018 20:01

Twitter may reassure you for science. Lots of disbelief on the type of question. Grade boundaries must surely be lower.

mmzz · 15/05/2018 20:02

Gibble if you look at Twitter, it might make you smile but it won't make you feel any worse. The most striking thing about it is the sophisticated wit of some of the DC young adults.

The thing to remember is that almost everyone found the AQA Biology exam hard, so that going to mean low average scores, and therefore low boundaries. (Unless the next one is extra easy so it all evens out).

OP posts:
AlexanderHamilton · 15/05/2018 20:02

Combined Science (double) can be taught in two ways Trilogy in which biology, chemistry & physics are taught separately or Synergy in which the 3 sciences are meant to be taught by two teachers so there is overlap. Schools choosecwhich spec to teach.

adrinkofwater · 15/05/2018 20:03

DS said that he found Biology (AQA triple) hard, but "everyone else" found it easier than expected! He is not happy and also confused as he usually does well. I think he had decided that some topics weren't worth revising (salmonella) and then they came up at the start and that put him off. French was "OK".

RS paper 2 "themes" tomorrow afternoon.

cubscout · 15/05/2018 20:05

Sorry your dd is upset Gibble1 Twitter might make you both feel better, some of the memes are very funny and many dc found it difficult.
Regarding French ds thought the papers were ok. But I wonder if they all take the same paper sometimes, he kept on about a passage where a student wad disappointed with an exam Grade 7.....AQA sense of humour or 3rd winding me up?????
