A new thread to take us through the exams

DD's review of the day was 'French was OKish. I didn't remember Sel meant salt. Biology was OK. I don't think it asked about carrots?'

from which I deduce that she was probably doing Edexcel.

Gibble1 · 15/05/2018 20:06

She’s doing combined science- double- synergy. I can’t find any twitter comments about the paper though?

Sostenueto · 15/05/2018 20:10

Carrots was not on the menu for aqa triple biology paper. Eggs was which DVD is allergic to Grin

AlexanderHamilton · 15/05/2018 20:13

Dh hasn’t just texted me that Dd has found a picnic table next to a lake & is revising there!

Stickerrocks · 15/05/2018 20:21

Our current thread won't last beyond Friday at this rate. The next will have to feature carrots, gastric bands and a pirouette in the title I feel.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 15/05/2018 20:30

Gibble AQA Synergy combines all three sciences on each paper, hence your DD having some physics as well as biology and chem. None of the local schools have chosen it. Most do AQA Trilogy for combined science which splits the subjects up more traditionally. It sounds like you might be the only one on the thread whose DC is taking it. Maybe the Student Room will have more info?

Somerville · 15/05/2018 20:30

Hope everyone's DC's are coping okay, and that especially those with health conditions or anxiety are holding up.

DD1 was fairly happy with biology and French today. They're the two subjects DH helped her with, and he was a lot more nervous than she was, and sat over his phone waiting for her verdict when she came out. (He adopted her very recently so it was their first dad-daughter thing. Smile)

Kingscote
Ah, well as divine as Harriet Vane is, this name isn't after the college or its literary double, but the even more divine Somerville family in Dorothy Dunnett's Lymond books.

mmzz · 15/05/2018 20:32

Stickerrocks not to mention exam board confusion

hmcAsWas · 15/05/2018 20:37

That's rather sweet re the first dad-daughter thing Somerville

EllenJanethickerknickers · 15/05/2018 20:46

And flash cards in the fridge! Grin

sandybayley · 15/05/2018 20:46

So who's got history tomorrow? I think kingscote junior does?

Joining brainmelt on Thursday for Latin and Chemistry.

DS1 in good form tonight. DD1 has a biology exam tomorrow (Year 9) and he's enjoying sharing his insight with her. I thought that having the pair of them doing exams at the same time round be difficult but it's actually not a bad thing. Might be a bit more stressful in 2020 when we have GCSEs and A levels Confused

sandybayley · 15/05/2018 20:48

Somerville lovely father/daughter bonding. Exams bringing families together!

brainmelt · 15/05/2018 20:51

sandy the bonding effect of Biology on siblings 💜

LooseAtTheSeams · 15/05/2018 20:54

Somerville that is very sweet - I like the fact he was actually nervous as well. (Gaudy Night is one of my favourite books so I’m afraid I also have Shrewsbury in mind!)
Not sure much RE revision is happening for tomorrow as DS is in full stress over chemistry mode instead! But he has normal-ish school days on Friday and Monday, which should help balance things out a bit.

user1471530109 · 15/05/2018 20:55

I haven't seen the paper! We are not allowed at my school until tomorrow.

But if CF came up, it wouldn't be about the genetics etc. There was a question on a specimen paper about celiacs and I think it will be along the same lines.
So basically, CF will stop nutrients being absorbed easily into the small intestine therefore reducing glucose and amino acids going into blood. This will reduce growth etc.

Like is said. Not seen paper. But I literally did the celiacs question this morning with my yr11 so hoping it's similar.

As for the carrots. Yes it seems funny, but surely it's just an osmosis question?

Every year the kids come out and say 'you didn't teach us that' but it's all about putting what has been taught to an unusual situation.

Hope all your DC are busy revising for the chem now! CakeBrew

mmzz · 15/05/2018 21:02

User - I wish!! DS has RE tomorrow and has spent all evening trying to cram a whole exam paper that he has failed to learn any of the previous 4 times he has revised it. Now, he is just trying to rescue a few marks by knowing the vocabulary.

OP posts:
EllenJanethickerknickers · 15/05/2018 21:07

That makes sense, user. I can remember outrage about some maths paper a couple of years ago and it was actually fine, just The Student Room and twitter making a mountain out of, well, not even a molehill.

DS3 assures me the CF question wasn't about genetics, but absorption in the intestines. Phew!

Oddsocks15 · 15/05/2018 21:41

DD is busy doing practice papers for maths Hmm - not sure why as maths exam isn’t until next week Hmm as usual no discussion. She seems happier so I’m clinging onto that

Pass the Wine

BlueBelle123 · 15/05/2018 21:47

Oddsocks the fact she seems happier now the exams have started must be a good sign, I think if she wasn't happy with how they had gone you would be the first to know about it! here have one on me Wine

Ellen you had me worried there for a minute as DS had been speaking to me earlier about his biology exam and also mentioned CF but not in the same context as your DS but I think that's because they are doing different boards, DS is doing Edexcel!

Well he has managed an hour of PE and has now gone off to bed all ready for tomorrow's exam.

KingscoteStaff · 15/05/2018 21:52

Yes KingscoteJunior has the One hour/One essay/40 marks History paper tomorrow. He is still pacing up and down the kitchen, muttering about the Weimar Republic and Herr Stresemann (his new Favourite Person).

Meanwhile, my other 30 children survived the SATs Reading Paper. Maths tomorrow...

EllenJanethickerknickers · 15/05/2018 21:57

Oops, sorry BlueBelle I guess we should start including the board with every mention of exams now. Yes, CF to do with absorption was on AQA triple science Biology today.

Sostenueto · 16/05/2018 06:58

Morning all! Its cold here this morning. Good luck to all today doing exams. Today dgd has RE paper 2 Judaism. Seems upbeat about it. But worry over yesterdays biology paper seems to have surfaced. I just said put it out of your mind, what's done is done onwards and upwards now. She did say paper 2 for triple biology will definitely be harder and should contain actual biology. But just in case she's revising some recipes for vegetablesGrin

cubscout · 16/05/2018 07:24

Morning. Sostenueto, your dgd has a great sense of humour! Think ds is also worrying about Biology yesterday now, was predicted 7/8 but worried he won't hit that.

Good luck to all today.

mmzz · 16/05/2018 07:25

DS has same paper coming up as your DGD, but exactly the opposite feelings about it. Says he can't remember any of it, can't make sense of any of it and is going to fail massively.

He seems to have a mental block because it is not that difficult. I've tried to help him revise and accidentally learned it myself (never wanted to know it, but now I do anyway Confused). So, today's the day when he gets to experience that awful feeling of having to sit in an exam when you don't know the answers. A life lesson.

Maybe, looking for the positive here, he will always remember this and it will give him motivation to do his best never to experience this again by choosing subjects wisely and revising when you don't feel like it.

callitwhatyouwill · 16/05/2018 07:30

LOL! at Sostenueto. Last night DD2 said that when she and her friends came out of the Edexcel Biology exam, those who weren't crying were saying "Dust, anyone? Dust?". They'd have been better off watching back episodes of "Little Britain" and "My 600 lb Life" plus studying and trying to decipher the drawings of a couple of toddlers rather than revising, apparently Grin. She's going to make sure she watches loads of reality tv and The Great British Bake Off before her next Biology exam on 11th June.... Wink
