Does anyone have a strong sense of what we should expect tomorrow?

Oh shit.

Here we go.

ShiftingSands21 · 14/12/2021 16:21

Why does everything always have to happen shambolically, if that were a word.

Nicola is back on tonight to address the nation following the latest on funding.

The funding seems to be to ramp up boosters and "virus support"
I doubt they have given money to pay for furlough which means that she still won't be able to close businesses etc

ShiftingSands21 · 14/12/2021 16:30

But wasn’t she always planning to address the nation tonight with a repeat of what she told parliament? Or has there been a suggestion of an actual “update”?

It looks like it's about the funding thing but I don't know. Twice in one day, I'm off to socially distance queue outside Tesco for 2 hours to buy wine 🍷

StarryNightSparkles · 14/12/2021 16:34

She was always booked in for tonight to address Scotland like Mark and Boris has done. The money she received from the treasury today was for Scotland to manage Covid independently from England the extra funding for boosters etc is a separate pot of money.

Callisto1 · 14/12/2021 16:35

I think I'll just stop reading the news. I feel myself getting increasingly stressed! Was totally convinced last week we could have a family Christmas and now it's starting to look like last year. Argh!!

StarryNightSparkles · 14/12/2021 16:37

Apologies just re read and seen your right it is now a live announcement rather than the pre recorded one. Will join you in the Tesco queue 🍷

casinoroyale4ever · 14/12/2021 17:01

And there was me think if it was a bit of a relief after the earlier announcements!

Its not. The 'extra funding' announced today is aimed largely at the accelerated booster roll out. And scotgov are already bemoaning it as an advance, and not extra. She wont get her hands on it before Christmas either.
StarryNightSparkles · 14/12/2021 17:08

I took this to mean extra for covid measures out with health care.

StarryNightSparkles · 14/12/2021 17:11

I am confused as stv are saying she is on at 6pm and bbc are saying shes on at 7pm 🤷‍♀️

ShiftingSands21 · 14/12/2021 17:15

This suggests new measures won’t be tonight but potentially they are coming.

I completely agree with what hes saying. How can we distance yet still go out? Yeah she made it crystal clear today when she said that she wished she could go further than what she put out today.
BoredZelda · 14/12/2021 17:19

Seems like sensible precautions to me. Could have done without the politicking. If you have to say “I’m not making a political statement” you invariably are.

She expolited furlough, to the nth degree, to keep Scotland in lockdown for longer than England, and to retain stricter restrictions. She did this with no benefit in terms of covid harm when compared to England. I have little to zero faith in westminster, however I do hope they'd keep her on a far tighter leash vis a vis furlough (should it ever return; which I sincerely hope it doesnt).
ParkheadParadise · 14/12/2021 18:01

She's back on again.

ShiftingSands21 · 14/12/2021 18:20

So that was nothing new and I see she had also said this.

I’m no fan of Nicola, but this is untrue. She used local lockdowns in exactly the same way as UKgov did, to protect different health boards when they were struggling. When different regions had spikes, she locked them down. In fact, my only criticism of her at that point was she should have used it a whole lot sooner in Glasgow when their numbers were out of control but she waited until most of central Scotland was then affected to lockdown us all. But even at that point there were vast swathes of the country which were at lower levels.

Scottishskifun · 14/12/2021 18:59

@boredzelda furlough was used for longer this summer for some sectors in Scotland which weren't allowed to open basically until it started to be tapered off.
So soft plays opened a lot later then England
Theatres opened later
Music venues due to the restrictions on indoors numbers etc

I think this is what it's in relation to not the previous year lockdown areas.

Scottishskifun · 14/12/2021 19:04

Well so much for not politicising in her address put blame squarely on WM not giving her furlough money.......

Its not untrue. Scotland was kept in full lockdown (in both the Spring 2020 lockdown and the Winter 2021 lockdown) for at least 2 weeks longer than England. The 'rules' here have been consistently (and significantly) further reaching. England dropped all restrictions in July 2021 whilst Sturgeon retained swathes of them (WFH, masks, restrictions in schools); retaining those restrictions, for all those consequent months, made no impact when compared.

Her early response to omicron was, again, to reach for the lockdown lever. Both Sturgeon and Drakeford started asking for the financial support (required for furlough) at the very outset (over 2 weeks ago). She's made very clear today that she'd've imposed harsher restrictions had she been handed the financial capacity.

Tobogganist · 14/12/2021 20:19

She didn't say anything about travel did she? Out with you health board area. I'm going to family down in the south of England on the 23rd.... starting to think it's better to cancel now...
