Does anyone have a strong sense of what we should expect tomorrow?

Seriously another briefing!
In my opinion Nicola should only have a briefing if there are any major changes not daily. I think daily briefings only add to people's anxiety. I will bet my bottom dollar now that she will be repeating what she's already said this week.

Sorry to read about your dh op shiftingsands. Hope you are both ok.

ShiftingSands21 · 17/12/2021 12:27

Thank you StarryNight!

So far this briefing seems fairly pointless.

ShiftingSands21 · 17/12/2021 12:35

Yup, completely pointless.

Perhaps I'm missing something here. Case numbers are lower than yesterday, and also lower than last Friday (and by quite a margin too), hospital and ICU numbers continue their downward trend, positivity rate seems more or less stable, but 'the tsunami is now starting to hit us'? What?

GoldenOmber · 17/12/2021 12:37

Limit your social contacts until Christmas, then we can have a more normal Christmas, aim is to get all the jabs in the arms by Hogmanay.

But then also… “Then after Christmas if we go back to reducing our contacts further, then we can hopefully minimise the impact of any January surge.” Hmm.

I think people are already doing a lot to cut down contacts and activities in run-up to Christmas. Not sure there’d be much goodwill for doing it all again after Christmas for an indefinite future period.

GoldenOmber · 17/12/2021 12:47

Okay she did later on say it would be after Christmas “for a wee while.” So I suppose that might be only a short time? Just hard to have much faith in anything being short-term at present.

ShiftingSands21 · 17/12/2021 12:55

Interesting to hear her explanation of what happened with the treasury funding though. The 220 million wasn’t new and it was actually less than the 268 million that SG had expected it to be. Not that I enjoy the point scoring aspect of this but just keen to understand what was going on there.

Right I get what she’s saying, but Jesus the repetition of this ‘simple arithmetic’ example is actually angering me. We get it.

santasmuma · 17/12/2021 13:25

I think as soon as she gets the nod from Boris about funding she is going to hit us with a lockdown

Scottishskifun · 17/12/2021 13:26

It's all just point scoring I think she's hoping that the Scottish public will get up in arms that WM isn't complying with with money requests and let's blame them because she wants to lock down but can't.....
Most people I know don't want another lockdown and are hoping that she doesn't get her own way!

I'm sorry but if it's a public health emergency then use your 350 million set aside for a bloody independence referendum surely if it's as important as she makes out!
It doesn't take an economist to see from their budget where money can be moved from!

LovelyMondayMornings · 17/12/2021 13:48

Can't see her getting that nod santasmuma, if she does I agree she'll lock us down for sure so I'm really hoping it's not forthcoming

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 17/12/2021 14:03

"Most people I know don't want another lockdown and are hoping that she doesn't get her own way!" This is me too - I'm praying that Boris holds firm and doesn't cave. I don't think he will though - I can't imagine English voters being happy with taxpayers money (and of course that includes Scottish tax payers) being used to furlough people up here while they are still expected to work, and his party will never allow anything approaching a lockdown. So yeah, thank God for Tory rebels Confused (strange times indeed).

So Nicola will probably do daily TV slots in which she warns us all of the impending doom and explains how it's all Westminster's fault because naughty Boris isn't giving her the money she wants to close businesses (as if the 'harms' were just a question of money). The irony is I find myself naturally being more cautious anyway (don't want to be taken out before Christmas), and I think most people are to an extent. The interesting thing is that, even though I'm not seeing many people, I don't feel restricted because it's my choice, and I know I could go out if I wanted to. That little extra control over my own life (even if the net effect is more or less the same), and that chance to be responsible for my own decisions, makes such a massive difference to my mental health.

Rae36 · 17/12/2021 14:20

after Christmas “for a wee while.”

That's what they said last year and the older kids weren't fully back to school till April. The very thought of that again makes me want to cry.

WouldBeGood · 17/12/2021 14:51

The good thing about her briefings is that they’ve made my previously wholly uninterested DD20 engage with politics. Todays messageds from her to me include “what’s the point of this?!” And “ooh, look at me, I’m
Important!” 🤣

Idontevenknow · 17/12/2021 14:53

Also praying Johnson says no- I don't know anyone who supports another lockdown and think Nicola has got it wrong and thinks that the majority do.

Also agree with previous poster-. I'm not doing much now but it is my choice. Likewise there are other things I would do that others would not, that is fine and nobody is right or wrong about that they feel comfortable doing, but it's about having the choice.

RunningInTheWind · 17/12/2021 14:55

I think I’ve just discovered a new shade of Scottish skin tone - it’s one up from Alabaster Blue.

I hadn’t been paying attention to all this shite so rocked up to the shop without a coat. It’s OAP Friday so the wait was forever!

WouldBeGood · 17/12/2021 15:11

@RunningInTheWind 🤣

WouldBeGood · 17/12/2021 15:11

Nipping at journalists isn’t a good look either

Haudyourwheesht · 17/12/2021 16:52

Nope, you can always tell when Nic's feeling the pressure - she can become really arsey. Nicola to Nippy when the pressure's on.

GaolBhoAlba · 17/12/2021 17:08

Everything she does/says is tactical. I find it impossible to listen to her now, just cant do it 😴

BoredZelda · 17/12/2021 17:58

Right @boredzelda so your opinion that all disabled people and vulnerable are being shafted counts but my stating that actually its the individual choice and many including friends and family of mine in thisvery same category is just anecdotal and doesn't count for anything...... right gotcha! hmm

My words weren’t opinion. They were facts, based on ONS data about the lives of disabled people, gathered statistics.

Still means there is a percentage of disabled people in employment though doesn't it and it's not anecdotal that there are policies and laws in place such as right to interview etc.

As I said, if you base policy on what the most advantaged can do, the disadvantage will suffer more because of it. And if policies were worth the paper they are written on, there would be no racism or sexism or disablism and clearly that’s not the case.

Just because your opinion or experience is something doesn't mean it's that for everyone in that category or group!

Just because you know a disabled person who is doing well, doesn’t mean that is reflective of the group as a majority.

ShiftingSands21 · 18/12/2021 10:17

Well lots of reports this morning about weekend cobra meetings with the 4 nations and 2 week circuits breakers after Christmas. If I didn’t know better I would say it sounds like that poster who was deleted for speculation but claimed to have inside information was on the money.

From my personal anecdotal experience, people are really getting cold feet and I can’t believe how many people are pulling out of heading to the football this weekend. People I didn’t think would.

elena3556 · 18/12/2021 10:35

I try to limit how much news I consume about the pandemic because if I didn't my mental health would be affected.

WouldBeGood · 18/12/2021 10:46

If they’re going to do a lockdown just do it now. The worry is awful.

I totally disagree with it but am so on edge with the anticipation
