Does anyone have a strong sense of what we should expect tomorrow?

Well we've front loaded all our outings so financially and socially, if there's not a lockdown after Christmas we may have to have a self imposed one anyway Grin

rookiemere · 18/12/2021 10:54

I've also order one of the Time Traveller books recommended on here and The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, which had a Radio 4 interview with the author a couple of weeks ago and sounded interesting. Sorry I should probably be on the chat thread, I get confused as which one is for what.

Off to catch/spread some germs at the Christmas market as annoying youngling forgot we were off to the steak place, so we've rescheduled until tomorrow.

Oh for Christ's sake, surely they've learned by now that circuit breakers won't work. Hopefully these are just contingency plans in case NHS capacity gets really overwhelmed, but I have to say it seems unlikely that England would agree to this. The other administrations are more trigger happy, but Boris has just taken a real beating from his own backbenchers over COVID passes, so I really can't see him going for a full lockdown unless the omicron wave really is apocalyptic. The more data that comes out about omicron the less likely this seems. SA data shows death rates from the omicron wave were about 1/3 of previous waves across all age groups, and lab results indicate its less able to infect the lower lung tissue which might suggest its less likely to cause severe disease (which is what clinical data thus far seems to suggest). In the evidence session a couple of days ago I think they said they'd have enough UK data to assess in the week between Xmas and New year, so perhaps they're waiting for this.

Yes thinking that the tory revolt might well keep the lid on a new lockdown. Ah the media, a never ending source of fear and loathing. Will not buy any papers this weekend!

RJnomore1 · 18/12/2021 11:53

All this uncertainty is really getting to me 😟

GoldenOmber · 18/12/2021 12:11

Still desperately hoping I will get to see my family for Christmas, although chances feel increasingly slim Sad

I know last year we could technically have some ‘household mixing’ over Christmas, but it was effectively limited to people who had family in Scotland and weren’t relying on public transport to get to them and could arrange their annual leave for the exact timeframe permitted. For the rest of us…

GaolBhoAlba · 18/12/2021 13:48

@WouldBeGood

If they’re going to do a lockdown just do it now. The worry is awful.

I totally disagree with it but am so on edge with the anticipation

This is how I feel. The communication is awful. If rumours of a lockdown are false, then westminster they should say so. And even if no decision has been made at westminster, they could at least clarify if/what they're considering.
WeeHaggisFace · 18/12/2021 14:38

I agree, the speculation is rarely worse than the truth so I would like them to give us a likely scenario. It's times like this I feel like we are the children being kept out of the grown ups conversation and its setting my nerves on edge.

ShiftingSands21 · 18/12/2021 23:43

Agree, I wish they would tell us what is planned or at least level with us on what they are thinking and when they will decide. But I’m guessing the reason why they haven’t shared much is to do with the fact that they can’t agree (and also the complicated Boris politics adding to that). It is a quandary though because by the time we would have proof of there being a serious problem, if there is one, it would be too late to do anything about it. We are almost at the point where much of it is baked in. So I can definitely understand both sides of the argument and the reason for the indecision right now.

I felt really down in the dumps this morning in the face of all this - tearful, which is very unlike me. I was obsessively scouring news sites and twitter for some positive/reassuring news (mixed results!). I gave myself a shake, and decided that (for the time being) I would avoid reading/watching any news, and avoid twitter too. Ive set the BBC news app on my phone to ping breaking news stories (so i'll get the headline if anything significant happens) and that will be it for news in the next week or two; no speculation, no rumours, just the facts. Ive had a lovely evening with the fam, i've barely touched my phone, and i'm feeling significantly more content than I did this morning 😊

RunningInTheWind · 19/12/2021 05:07

gaol - I avoid the news - hence me having no idea we were back to the queuing outside shops bollocks!

I really would advise against “news alerts”. I had them on my phone when this al kicked off originally and all it did was send my anxiety sky high every time I heard the klaxon. Most of the time it’s not even particularly significant - but the adrenaline/cortisol is not good just because Kerry Katona quit love island (or whatever!).

WeeHaggisFace · 19/12/2021 08:46

I agree with running, I've just yesterday switched the push notifications on my news apps off. I'm not watching news, listening to the radio or on FB so I rely on DH to keep me informed of anything I need to know right now.

I have found that since quitting FB 6 months ago I feel so much better in general, I don't see all the doom and gloom.

GaolBhoAlba · 19/12/2021 08:59

Perhaps i'll switch off the pings in a day or two. Right now though, whilst things may (or may not 🤞) develop, its better (for me) than constantly checking the news, and inevitably ending up down the twitter rabbit hole!

WeeHaggisFace · 19/12/2021 09:06

Ah yes if that's likely to happen the ping will probably be useful. I'm very much adhering to the out of sight out of mind and pretending that if I ignore it long enough it will go away!

nannynick · 19/12/2021 09:10

NEWS - Negative Events World Service
Yep, turn off the notifications.

WouldBeGood · 19/12/2021 09:16

“Turn off the news and build a garden” in the words of Lukas Nelson 😊

I agree. I am not keen on having news alerts sent to my phone at the moment either. Going to see if I can switch off my news alerts. I have been trying not to consume too much of the news recently.
Haudyourwheesht · 20/12/2021 20:20

Once I finish up at work on Wednesday I'm ignoring the news (as far as humanly possible) for at least a week. Christmas shopping done, food shopping done, no plans outwith our wee family - that's me done.

WeeHaggisFace · 20/12/2021 20:31

Don't blame you haudyourwheesht I'm going to do similar however, I've come down with a horrible cold/cough and awaiting a PCR result so our plans may be scuppered if its covid or even just a cold that doesn't sling its hook before hand 😕

WouldBeGood · 20/12/2021 20:37

I can’t ignore it as I’m booked to go to the races and a hotel on 1st 🙄 And would prefer not to be stuck at home in my child free time. I need a holiday.
