Randomising going on. Labour bombed it. I was politically adrift yesterday but now I'm sunk.

OP posts:
charliebrown59 · 08/05/2021 19:08

Same here, time to check out of politics for a bit eh? Wish I could escape from the rampaging othering but children committed to a school so best to switch off for a while!

Cold comfort - the SNP plus greens may have the political numbers for another blinking awful referendum now but they don't look to have the percentages needed to win it as yet, and they know that.

RaspberryCoulis · 08/05/2021 19:09

Unionist: 1,364,656 (CON/LAB/LD)
Nationalist: 1,326,194 (SNP/GRN)

Majority: 38,462

Switching off here too. Thank fuck for Netflix.

GrandPrismatic · 08/05/2021 19:09

Yeah she’s a brilliant liar is Nicky. Great speech writer...shame it’s all bullshit.

forfucksakenett · 08/05/2021 19:12

@Scottishskifun it's truly horrible that you've had to endure abuse for being English. That's not the Scotland I would want to live in. Have you ever reported this behaviour? I certainly would. It's racist and it's not acceptable.

@RaspberryCoulis surely @StarryEyeSurprise can post what she likes? It's a free country. 50% are interested going by your logic.

forfucksakenett · 08/05/2021 19:15

40,000 people favouring unionism is nothing. Let's say it takes a year. Think of all the kids turning 16. The majority of young folk are independence voters. It's very close.

lavieengrenache · 08/05/2021 19:21

Just had enough now. The thought of another independence referendum fills me with dread. I feel like crying tbh, which is not like me at all.

forfucksakenett · 08/05/2021 19:25

@RaspberryCoulis

More division. More referendum campaigning while education and the rest of it is left to go to shit. More nastiness and ill-feeling.

Fucking awful. We are living in a totally divided country.

The only silver lining is that the odious Salmond appears to have crashed and burned.

Not having a referendum doesn't make us any less divided.
Scottishskifun · 08/05/2021 19:30

@forfucksakenett I pull people up on it either to a laugh or to be told its not racist as everyone hates the English is what I got last referendum. Its very difficult to report when it's one persons word against another and thankfully?! It's never been physical.
It reduced massively after the last referendum, started ramping up again with the pandemic - got told we don't want your lot up here spreading the virus..... 🙄
I know it will get worse and definitely not alone in it. You only have to read some of the messages on here to already see some of the undertones coming out!

lavieengrenache · 08/05/2021 19:31

So older people, with a lifetime of experience, dying off, and young people (16 year olds ffs) with no experience at all but with a rarified vision of independence, will be what takes us out of the UK. Brilliant.

Perhaps what would make us less divided is the SNP actually doing something which will benefit the country. Sort out education. Try and attract some jobs. Help the economy recover from the pandemic. Sort out drug deaths.

Srirachachacha · 08/05/2021 19:33

Happy to be told I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't the young people of the UK who dragged us out of Europe. Age does not always equal learning from experience.

@Scottishskifun It's racist abuse and even if it's one person's word against the other you should still report it if you feel able to. I work with a fair few English people and thankfully they don't seem to have shared your experience but it's a pretty multicultural wee bit with people from all over the world. it's unacceptable. The HCB although unpopular may be your friend here. If they think it's so funny they'll probably be daft enough to admit it.

lavieengrenache · 08/05/2021 19:37

But at least they've had life experience to learn from.

forfucksakenett · 08/05/2021 19:37

A lifetime of experience doesn't make you a good voter. 16 year olds are quite literally voting for their own future. It's a tad patronising to suggest that they will be incapable of voting in their own best interests.

forfucksakenett · 08/05/2021 19:38

I work with young people and many of them have had experiences I can only imagine. Many have plenty life experience.

Exactly this.

"Older people dying off..." well....yes, and the younger people are voting for the world they want to live in. You can't vote when you're dead Hmm

lavieengrenache · 08/05/2021 19:41

And many have very little.

lavieengrenache · 08/05/2021 19:43

The issue is that many young people will have bought into the rosy view of independence being pushed by the SNP and the Greens. Young people are very idealistic - as they should be, but with experience you gain a more rounded and realistic view of the world.

forfucksakenett · 08/05/2021 19:43

@lavieengrenache

And many have very little.
The same could be said of many adults. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I just cannot get worked up about young people getting a say in their own future.

You're generalising completely.
Quincie · 08/05/2021 19:47

I dislike the Tory government and I don't understand why anyone votes for them. There are other pro union parties that are not Tory.

Honestly, those voting SNP but not particularly wanting independence - what miracle is going to happen that the Scottish Gov does all it pledges - I mean it's had 14 years and where I live things have got pretty bad - certainly schools underfunded, drug problem rife, no jobs and bad roads - but people hate the Tories ??? why do you like NS??

lavieengrenache · 08/05/2021 19:48

Thanks Hmm

Like the older generation with Brexit....? Young people can get married, join the army, pay taxes. They sure as hell should be allowed to have a say in the way their country is run.
Quincie · 08/05/2021 19:53

They sure as hell should be allowed to have a say in the way their country is run.
Yes, but at 16 they probably haven't had DCs, paid a mortgage, run a home even. They are going to follow their heart rather than their head.

Quincie · 08/05/2021 19:56

Anyway NS said that if they have a majority they will demand a referendum, they haven't got a majority. I can't see that even though greens vote with them that justifies a ref. People vote green for environmental reasons, you can't assume people actually voted green for indyref2.
The judges will decide.

ResilienceWanker · 08/05/2021 19:57

But younger voters voted no in 2014. It wasn't until the 25plus cohort when it switched to yes, in the majority. May be different now, given many 16 year old will have grown up with SNP government, but the data doesn't automatically support the assertion that idealistic youth vote independence for their future...
