For anyone who is still offering messages of hope, wisdom and general loveliness 🥰

He knows he can get to you when he is free to say what he likes in person or on the phone. He may suspect you keep his messages, and whether he is prepared to admit it or not, he does know on some level that what he is doing would be viewed as unacceptable by anyone else. He really doesn't want you to be able to retain proof of his bullying, controlling behaviour, so he's going to keep trying to draw you into these phone coversations. Hang in there with the "written messages only" approach OP. You are winning this.

Also. Can you find a way of recording the conversations next time. An old iphone that you don't use? Or your tablet?

@mummy917

What @AllIneedAreMyFamilyandDogs has said is true. He's using his old and false 'complaints' about you to deflect from the real issue; his contribution to his children. And it's working.

You need to learn to ignore his 'attacks' and return straight to the subject at hand.

You: I need your 1/2 contribution to the rugby kit.
Him: There you go again telling me what to do. You are so controlling.
You: That's your opinion. What I want to know is when are you going to pay your 1/2 contribution?
Him: This is why I left you, you are such a bitch.
You: That's your opinion. Are you going to pay your fair share of the kit or not?
Him: You can whistle for that money. You really are a nag
You: That's your opinion. I have your answer then, no contribution. I will make a note of it. Goodbye.

At some point you're going to have to blunt his weapon of 'going after you'. He'll keep doing it as long as he gets the reaction he wants, which is to either upset you or to deflect from something he doesn't want to commit to. And the only way you can blunt that weapon is not to react to it. I know, it'll be 'fake it til you make it' for a while, but you'll get to the point where it really does roll off your back. I've been there and I know. I can't tell you how often I had to grit my teeth and think silently "consider the source" whilst repeating calmly 'that's your opinion'.

I know you may not be in a place to do this immediately. But think about it.

This... with knobs on.

bigboykitty · 13/10/2026 13:48

There's no need to record conversations. Just tell him that you will only have a phone call if there is a life and death situation regarding the children. Advise him to use email only to contact you, since he refuses to use a parenting app. I heartily recommend the never-speaking-to-him-again approach. So much peace.

My son must’ve let slip to him that I’m going out this weekend and that I’m staying out on Saturday night and I’ve had the 3rd degree via text (none of which I’ve responded to). Part of me wishes I was staying in some luxurious hotel with a hot, rich man, but I’m going for bottomless brunch and then staying in a travel lodge with my friends rather than getting Ubers an hour back home. I don’t feel like I need to justify it with any response. It’s none of his business anymore.

Exactly so - what a colossal cheek to even ask you about it 😡

Just tell him you're getting an all-night tattoo.

What an earth did he say? The mind boggles. I don’t see what he possibly had to say about something that’s none of his business whatsoever.

”You forgot to mention you were staying out Saturday night. Are you staying somewhere local, incase I need to contact you about the kids? I have Ellie’s (not her real name) number still, if I can’t get hold of you and it’s urgent. I don’t understand why you didn’t tell me you were staying out, it seems out of character for you to stay out rather than just going home. All these bank shifts must be coming in handy!”

They're his kids. I'm sure he can cope with whatever crops up.

Is he suggesting he will never go far from the kids in case something crops up? No holidays?

WearyAuldWumman · 13/10/2026 22:03

Apart from anything else, all he needs is your mobile - which he has.

WearyAuldWumman · 13/10/2026 22:04

seems out of character for you to stay out

So he knows that you normally don't get any time to yourself? Controlling c that he is.

Freeyourmind · 13/10/2026 22:05

He has absolutely no right whatsoever to ask you what you’re doing. But how the tables have turned. He’s sensing you’re out of reach now. Your silence will drive him mad.

HA. OP You MUST enjoy this. Look at him absolutely panicking. Sorry I thought you were the controlling one?!

You're doing this all wrong OP. It’s HIM who is supposed to be released from your control and live a life of single freedom. YOU are supposed to stay at home, provide him with things he needs and be there at home where he left you whenever he needs extra help or more time off.

Two2TooAlsoToToward · 13/10/2026 22:06

“Not to worry—they’ll be with their capable (snort) father while I’m away, and you can always lean on your mum if necessary.”

LastOnePlease · 13/10/2026 22:07

I just wouldn’t reply. That’s the best reply as it will drive him absolutely mad. Oh how the tables have turned.

Indeed. OP is at bottomless brunch and Twattoo is home alone with 4 kids and no pennies to rub together. This can’t be the footloose single life he envisioned.

I mean, it's always been obvious that he was projecting - that HE is the one who was/is busily trying to control you, not the other way around.

This is 100% evidence of this.

YourFairCyanReader · 13/10/2026 22:10

How dare he?! Why would you need to tell him where you are sleeping?! And to try to guilt trip you implying you're not being the usual dependable mum etc. He has your mobile number and that's enough. Cheeky twat. Well done for not replying.

Freeyourmind · 13/10/2026 22:11

I’m so conflicted, I’d actually be inclined to say I always have my phone with me for emergencies! But I also think the silence is good too, let him fill in the gaps 😝

Two2TooAlsoToToward · 13/10/2026 22:12

If you remind him that you have your mobile phone for emergencies, I guarantee that he will fabricate an “emergency “.

mummy917 · 13/10/2026 22:13

I’ve got no intention whatsoever to reply to him. The audacity of him is half funny and half infuriating, but not enough for me to want to respond to him.

Yes. The sanctimonious little shit would try to spoil @mummy917 's time away.

Freeyourmind · 13/10/2026 22:15

And the “you forgot to mention”…. No I didn’t forget, I just don’t tell you about my life because it’s none of your business! These men literally don’t have any shame whatsoever.
