So sad I never met the one..

I follow someone online and she has the most lovely partner who clearly adores her and worships her. I feel so sad this never happened for me and probably never will now 😔 online dating fills me with dread and the men on there are often said to be the “dregs of society” not my words! But I don’t meet men irl either so would need to look online. I feel too old Now as well to meet someone decent as was reading on another post all the decent men in their 40s will be coupled up. Has anyone ever felt this way then managed to meet someone?

No such thing as 'the one'. You are setting yourself up to fail. There are lots of 'ones' out there, many partners you will be compatible with. You make your own luck and happiness in life though. If you're waiting for a light ing bolt or to be swept off your feet you may be waiting a long time. If you want to meet someone then be open to it and make opportunities. Or not. It's up to you. It's your life.

I’ve explained quite a few times that I mean the one “for me” since i dont want an open relationship so yes just one!

You don’t meet met in real life? That can easily change if you want it to.

Don‘t write yourself off based on today’s situation.

I meant men dont chat to me or approach me like they use to when I was younger in my 20s men would approach me all the time (walking down the street / doing my shopping) now men do not approach me when im out

In all honesty, you just need to leave your house for the opportunity to meet someone to happen.

I wasn't going to divulge this but in light of your update, here goes...

I held a shop door open for someone on Friday; there was a guy that had to wait while the person I held the door open for exited. The guy then struck up a few minutes long conversation with me (I was holding some flowers). He said he hoped I wasn't buying flowers for myself (I actually was 🫣) but I said I was buying them for my Mum 🤷 !!!??
I was in the queue ahead of him and he wanted to buy me some flowers for doing a good deed. I obviously declined. Then he started telling me he was going to the new coffee shop afterwards... at which point I got to the front of the queue.
The shop lady was positively giddy! 😁 It was as though she thought she was witnessing a budding romance!

It was a nice confidence boost - and potentially this could have gone on to a chat over coffee.

So what I'm trying to say is, you never know where or when you might meet someone - but you need to leave you home x

Why didn't you go for a coffee with him?

Honestly OP I would focus just on yourself. If a man comes along, great, but I think you'll be infinitely better off if you find happiness and contentment within yourself. You also risk finding bad men if you are desperate to find someone.
They're often more trouble than they're worth anyway, you've seen the threads on this website.
Focus on YOU and have a complete life on your own, is my advice.

Absolutely agree, I also wish I’d found the one, but unfortunately I didn’t. So now it’s just all about me, my family and my dog. The solo girl life is good 😊

BlueRoseRedRose · 10/08/2026 22:12

Of course I leave my house lol you think I don’t go shopping? That use to happen to me ALL the time in my 20s i couldnt leave the house without men chatting me up (not trying to sound big headed but yes men chatted me up in the shops, on the street, on the train) that does not happen now. Nothing.

I’m sorry you’re going through this. I can’t say if it will or will not happen but try joining a group/hobby club of something you’re interested in. Anything, just put yourself out there. Dating is so hard now with it predominantly being online and full of time wasters/perves etc. but don’t give up. You have a lot to give and be given too xx

Lovelyview · 10/08/2026 22:30

Op, you're 38, which quite young, and don't seem to grasp that being desperate for a relationship is not attractive. If you can't afford therapy, talk to AI about it. Claude or Chat GPT are pretty good. Tell it that you want it to be a therapist or life coach and have a really in depth discussion about your situation. The people who have said embrace being single aren't saying you should want to be single all your life, they're saying you would be massively more attractive to men if you enjoyed your current life and embraced everything that's wonderful about it.

BlueRoseRedRose · 10/08/2026 22:31

Im not desperate where on earth have you got that from? I haven’t even dated in years lol. 😂 ive used AI but not a fan personally

Desperate people settle for anything or jump from relationship to relationship I haven’t dated in years so please don’t call me desperate again it’s not very nice

Why didn't you go for a coffee with him?

He didn't ask and then the moment had gone as I was at the front of the queue 🤷 I imagine if he is savvy he would have realised they know me in the shop. I'm not impossible to track down here x

BlueRoseRedRose · 10/08/2026 22:39

I think a few people have got the wrong end of the stick here and words like desperate keep being thrown around, im far from desperate i dont give off desperate vibes and I know my worth I also am very independent lived alone for years raised my kids alone till teens, im not desperate for a relationship, and I haven’t dated in years, I do not settle for anything and I haven’t jumped from relationship to relationship hoping one would stick, I came across a couple on Facebook as I get suggestions on there and they seemed nice so I started watching them then thought it was lovely how much he adored her and clearly loved and worshiped her then I had a touch of sadness that this never happened for me. That no one loves me (yes my kids do but I mean romantic) and that it probably will never happen now. I am not “desperate” and don’t give off vibes to men of desperado because I haven’t even dated in years, I took the advice of people to live my life and the right man may come along but he didn’t, so here I am.

I haven't read the whole thread but just wanted to say I hear you OP. Sometimes you just need permission to feel a bit sad. Yes friends and hobbies are great, but I wish people would stop trying to convince others that falling in love and having great sex on top of those things wouldn't be nice. Yes some people have terrible relationships, but a lot of people have great ones too. It's ok to feel sad about the turns your life has/hasn't taken.

I didn't mean to be rude. You sound very negative about being single whereas I'm saying the more you enjoy your life without a partner the more attractive you'll be to men. You rejecting various suggestions made me think that you felt you could only be happy with a partner.

ContractorQuestion · 10/08/2026 22:46

I understand how you feel BlueRose. I also never met “the one”. I am 50, single, no children. I dated, I had some relationships, but none of them worked out. Yes of course it’s still possible that I could meet someone now and spend the rest of my life with them. But the rest of my life is the autumn/winter of my life, when my body is flagging, I have less energy, and inevitably my health will decline the older I get. I do lead a good life as a single woman, as good a life as I can. But I’ll forever be sad that I didn’t get to share my life, or the best part of my life, with someone else.

I understand what you meant. I just mean there's not just one man that's right for you. I wasn't advocating an open relationship or more than one at once. Just pointing out that there isn't just one man that's right for each of us. There's a lot of men in the world. I met my 'one' 30 years ago. He died. If I had just believed in ' the one' that would have been me done. I made my own happiness and found DH. So yes. I believe in more than one 'one's'.

Thanks, exactly, friends can only do so much and cant replace certain parts of a loving relationship

My now husband was late 40s when we met. He’s wonderful, no baggage etc, just never met ‘the one’. Don’t give up hope OP!

Charlize43 · 10/08/2026 23:03

One of the women I work with, Carmencita, who is 63 has a string of boyfriends. She's had one after the other. She meets them at the Salsa Club. She's dating a 39 year old Brazilian at the moment, Joao - she brought him in and he was very good looking!

I think its all down to attitude and outlook.

BrokenWingsCantFly · 10/08/2026 23:09

I'm in exactly the same boat as you OP, simular age, also have a grown up teen so not wanting to date me with young kids or who wants kids. Also have a successful solo life, but missing that extra bit of the puzzle that most others get. Also stay single without dating for years at a time.

Some of the replies you have got I find frustrating as they all jump to the same assumptions and predicable 'on the plus side most relationships are shit and being single is better' easy to say when you have done life with a partner. Why don't you just leave your partner then if it seems so glorious.

Wanting to partner up doesn't mean you are desperate for it. As you say, if you was desperate you would be with anyone, never single. I could get a partner this week if I would take anything. But want someone right for me with mutual attraction, shared interests, intellect and life goals. That's not so easy to find.

Like you I also got chatted up anywhere and my looks havnt declined that much at 39. There are just less single men our age about now, so most you happen to walk by in real life will either be coupled up or assume you are even if they are single. As you say, coupled up friends are busy living their own family life most times. And even when I spend the day with friends, family, they go home to their partners at night and reflect on their day, I come home to my dog. There's noone there for the spontaneous 'shall we nip out and do this' for an hour. That doesn't mean I'm desperate, I'm most certainly not. Making strides and the most out of life in every other department I can. Many things I'm focusing on and enjoying the most I can. Doesn't make that natural biological thoughts of feeling i missing out not having a partner to do life with though for that bonus on top.

I'm not giving up on online dating, as I think odds are slim to find someone who happens to be simular age, single, attractive and ticking many other boxes in real life. I'm searching all the single ones on a 35 mile radius and still rarely finding 1 I like the look & sound of. I will put more effort into it when summer is out of the way and find more time to sieve through the shit ones, then shit replies, then waste of times, then shit real life dates, arr it is a lot.

Good luck with your search too. It is hard. You are not alone. I know 2 others our ages in the exact same boat too in real life. Both also beautiful successful women. I do think that actually puts some men off as it can be intimating so have the woman to have achieved more in life. The ones that have been mega successful and will outearn most women by miles, will be buying themselves a sugar baby. Those on par will usually still want to be the higher earner. Those a tad less will the the insecure ones I mentioned. And those with much less i wouldn't want myself anyway.

kimberleycowgirl · 10/08/2026 23:15

Flip it on its head. If you are single and apparently like yourself and consider yourself worthy of finding love yet are still single at 38 why is there any reason on gods green earth there isn’t a man who has had similar lofe
circumstances out there still looking too? And just because a man has been in a serious relationship and then divorced and ‘thrown back’ by another woman there’s no reason why he wouldn’t be perfect for you- he simply wasn’t their ‘one’.

i am a simple age to you OP and I have noticed (as I am sure you have in your life) that there are waves of time where all my friends seem to couple up, then waves of babies and waves of divorces and repairing as new life seasons move us all along.

no one will be without baggage, and they may have been with people who they were unsuitable for in the past but that doesn’t mean they are not perfect for you!

its never too late- my father who was widowed in his seventies after 50 happy years with my mother went online just to find companionship and is now in love again like a giggling teenager after meeting a woman in her 80s!

SonK · 10/08/2026 23:18

Maybe you will find that perfect someone : ) have an optimistic approach to life - but don't actively look for your 'soul mate', just carry on doing whatever you enjoy.

Also, we cannot have it all; some people have the perfect partner, the perfect career, the perfect health... But not all. Focus on what you do have and enjoy it.

I really thought I had the perfect partner and so did everyone else then 5 years later it turned to domestic abuse with attempts to kill me.

In an ideal world, I would find my 'soul mate' too, but I am going to focus on making my own happily ever after with my children and just moving forward.
