Ghosted after a great first date. Best response?

WildflowerGardens · 09/12/2025 10:12

I had a first date with a man off hinge on Saturday afternoon - we had coffee and then walked round an illustration fair. The whole time we were laughing and talking animatedly and seemed to have a lot in common. At the end of the date he pulled me into a bear hug and said “see you again soon”.

I texted him that evening to say “Great to meet you, what a fun afternoon!” but he didn’t reply and it’s now Tuesday. I think I’ve been ghosted.

I feel like sending a final message, something like “Ghosting in your forties? I only date grown men: good luck with your ongoing search 👋 ” before blocking him but I’m not sure if I should do this.

My reasoning is that I think ghosting is crap behaviour and people who ghost should be called out on it.

Any advice very welcome.

@SoftBalletShoes Well, she never had an advance more than a month's rent for a house/flat in London, which is very understandable. So that rules out some of your big names.

Maybe she writes historical romantic novels.

*hysterical

This may be an unpopular opinion but I don't think it's that bad to ghost someone after one date. You go on the date to see if you like someone and want to keep seeing them, but if you don't have much invested in them then I don't think it's that bad to simply not respond anymore. It gives a clear enough message.

Completely agree. You don’t owe someone you met once anything.

Not responding is the exact same as a text saying “I wasn’t feeling it”. They mean the same thing.

The compliment was actually about her bonnet.

Is she Emma?
Jane Eyre?
Tess ?
Little Dorrit?

MyPurpleHeart · 09/12/2025 16:18

For an author OP you have a very thin skin

You sound like an absolute peach. Cant understand why you are single in your 40s at all 🙄

Tryingatleast · 09/12/2025 16:19

Phone could be broken, battery gone, he may not be a phone person, could have something wrong at home etc etc etc

First you say it was a great first date, very promising and you’re disappointed he hadn’t replied to you saying as such to him directly.

Then, he’s ugly and bald but that’s fine. You were very generous and went with him anyway. Now you say he practically followed you through Sainsbury’s after the date had ended “to your dismay” because he quite fancied more time with you.

And you’re a writer, yes? Because you aren’t portraying yourself as a very reliable narrator here. If he picked up on your clear dismay at the extension of the date perhaps he thought you were just being polite with the text. Perhaps he picked up on your obvious mixed signals and has decided himself to dodge the bullet you don’t realise you are.

Would imply that he’s interested, oh could it be
That this PhD-holding man wants to wed me?

I think we need to move on from rhyming couplets. They're a bit dated now.
How about a limerick instead?

Methinks that OP is somewhat bullshitting

All of a Twist , perhaps.

Are you an author, OP? Don’t think you mentioned it.

Indeed, but very limited with the words.

Definitely leave it, be the bigger person, it looks very needy to send a message like that.

I am very needy, so at least I’d be on brand. He replied anyhow

No

'Woman goes on a date, gets stroppy when she doesn't hear from him, proceeds to slag him off then all his hunky dory when he appears again'

🤷‍♀️

MissDoubleU · 09/12/2025 16:30

Ahh, so now you’ve got a second date with the less than attractive man, who you offered up to anyone else would take him, you are very excited! No longer is he a creepy puppy dog who stalked you around the supermarket. Now he is an eager PHD holding professional. Very good work. Another convenient swift in the opposite direction.

Do you always bend your will and desires so tightly to how each man is responding to you? He isn’t worth it, he’s wasted your precious time, rude and needy at the same time. Oh wait nevermind. He texted back, what shall I wear?

Feel like I’m talking to a 17 year old.

I can do what I like, dear ducky duck, I can go on dates, I can change my mind if I choose
