Splitting restaurant bill

This is a wwyd:

Went on a date last night. Dinner and some drinks.

At the end the waiter gave the guy the bill. He paid it. I didn't offer to split.

He's now been off with me. When I asked why, he said it was because I didn't pay my half of the bill, or even offer.

I was quite taken aback as he alluded to me being a gold digger. As I was annoyed I apologised and told him to send his bank details, so he hadn't wasted his evening.

To my surprise he has now replied with the details, saying 'if you want to pay, we can forget about it and move on'.

I also paid for the taxi to my house - we went together (not a first date).

Would you pay it and move on or finish it with him?

Do you know about his financial situation?

Theapplestretching · 25/01/2018 21:03

He earns more than me but not a lot.

Both on about 35k.

Pay your half ..to the penny and move on ASAP

Bitchywaitress · 25/01/2018 21:06

What a tight fucker. You are well rid.

OakIsBetterTho · 25/01/2018 21:06

You were very rude and presumptuous not to even offer to pay half. Im amazed you have the lack of self awareness to then be annoyed with him for saying why he was annoyed however if I were you, I'd probably just finish it and move on, you shouldn't be bickering and arguing so early on.

Yep I would move on. I don’t like tight-fisted quality that some have and he sounds like he care too much about his wallet.

ScreamingValenta · 25/01/2018 21:07

The issue isn't the bill, it's the fact he can't have a simple conversation with you about it at the appropriate time - instead he has to pay (apparently begrudgingly) then sulk and wait for you to ask him what's wrong. If he's doing that after one date, I dread to think what he'd be like in a long term relationship. Just move on!

Emilybrontescorsett · 25/01/2018 21:08

Pay your half then move on......
Not with him.
You paid for the taxi, get tid

Emilybrontescorsett · 25/01/2018 21:08

Rid

EggsonHeads · 25/01/2018 21:08

Was he the one who asked you to dinner? If so he was hosting and should have expected to pay.

Has he always insisted on paying in the past? If so it would be a bit rude if you to offer after a certain point.

Even if the two above don't apply he seems to have terrible manners and a pettiness problem. Pay him and don't go out with him again.

fruitlovingmonkey · 25/01/2018 21:08

He sounds mean. If it bothered him so much, why did he go home with you?

Theapplestretching · 25/01/2018 21:09

We've always gone halves or taken turns to pay before. He asked me, chose the restaurant and ordered so I didn't influence the bill.

If he wanted to split I thought he would've said.

The bill was about £110

Well his behavuour is ridiculous, but I can't understand why you wouldn't offer to pay half in the first place. What is this the 1920s. You even earn a comparable amount.

Bluntness100 · 25/01/2018 21:11

He ordered for you without your input??.

Theapplestretching · 25/01/2018 21:13

It was an Indian sharing style restaurant, I'm not an expert on Indian food and happy to let the guy order as he's been several times before.

I agree you definitely should have paid half, but he's a dick for being passive aggressive and sulking after rather then speaking about it like an adult. Get rid of him and pay infuture

Bitchywaitress · 25/01/2018 21:13

Oak maybe the OP assumed he wanted to pay, as he, I don't know maybe picked up the check and paid for it! I have paid the bill on many occasions, with new and old friends, and on dates.

It has been almost 15 years since I last had a date but surely men still want to pick up the check? If my DH had pulled this passive aggressive nosense I would have been very turned off.

NataliaOsipova · 25/01/2018 21:13

If this had happened many times, I'd have a bit of sympathy for him. But if you've been out before and we're planning to go out again, surely you'd just pick up the tab the next time? So it seems odd for him to make a fuss about it at that point.

Shadow666 · 25/01/2018 21:13

I agree that the way he has handled this is a huge red flag. I’d pay, minus his half of the taxi, and move on. I would always offer to pay half though or offer to get the next dinner.

Cambionome · 25/01/2018 21:14

He sounds unpleasant but I don't understand why you didn't at least offer to pay your share? Was it his "turn" to pay in your view?

Tiredmum100 · 25/01/2018 21:14

Pay half the bill and move on... without him.

Backtoblack1 · 25/01/2018 21:15

He sounds vulgar. However, I would pay the exact half and never see him again. I hate meanness in people, it would put me right off.

NataliaOsipova · 25/01/2018 21:15

Well put, Screaming

Aridane · 25/01/2018 21:16
