How much did your engagement ring cost?

Sorry for the nosy thread but I'm genuinely intrigued.. I see huge rocks, cute little numbers and they're all beautiful but I often wonder how people afford them and what's considered a 'normal' amount to spend? I know it used to be months salary in the old days.. Is that still the case?

christmas lucky you, I want a ring for each child! But I am materialistic like that, ha :)

I don't mind being shackled at all. It's a rather beautiful addition. Plus I am a baker so they're on and off all the time, hardly restrictive Grin

FrazzleM · 12/09/2016 22:00

8 carats hormonal? Gee whizz!

Mine's 2 carats. How the heck do you fit 8 carats on your finger? It must be gigantic. I'm shamelessly in awe of sparkly things. Grin

In all honestly I thought this thread would have been hijacked long ago by miserable buggers.

And whoever said that men don't wear engagement rings, mine did and I know of others too.

Soupandasandwich · 12/09/2016 22:39

Nothing. We'd been a couple for a few years and just wanted to be married. All our money was saved to pay for our first house and our wedding. He gave me a small, but imo , beautiful ring with three diamonds on our silver anniversary, 'yesterday, today and tomorrow ', he called it. It's not big or flashy but it means the world to me because we've struggled financially most of our married life and for us, this was a big purchase, though at around £200 it is a drop in the ocean compared to some on here. We've been together, happily, almost 40 years, so clearly the value of a ring is not the be all and end all.

NotAsYoungAsIWas · 12/09/2016 22:50

Engagement ring was about £270 I think (1990) and wedding ring was about £50 (1991) Wear them both (and my eternity ring) everyday!

HormonalHeap · 12/09/2016 23:05

Frazzle it's really not that big at all as its a full band so all divided up! We had it made so paid a lot less than it would be in a shop.

Tiggeryoubastard · 12/09/2016 23:13

soupandsandwich what you have sounds priceless.

Middleoftheroad · 12/09/2016 23:22

My engagement ring is platinum and diamond and around £1500 10 yrs ago but I prefer my platinum wedding ring (cheaper).that has a'twin' blue and a brown stone in each representing my DTS' eye colours

pissedglitter · 12/09/2016 23:23

I have no idea, I didn't ask as I thought it would be rude

Had it about 9 years now and I love it as much as I did on that first day

Soupandasandwich · 13/09/2016 07:34

Thank you Tigger, to me, it is. I think we are extremely fortunate to have found each other so young.

16augustholiday · 13/09/2016 08:19

Mine was £1k 20 years ago.

Reading this thread makes me wonder if I should get it valued for insurance purposes. Do you just randomly go into a jewellers and ask them? How do you know if they know what they're talking about rather than a sales assistant?

paranormalish · 13/09/2016 08:25

I bought my wife a 2.5 Carat brilliant cut Solitaire diamond on a platinum ring. It is vulgar to discuss money.

MrsRaymondReddington · 13/09/2016 08:28

If you take it in to a jewellers they would either have a qualified valuer there or they would send it off to be valued. I'd really recommend it for insurance reasons, as it would definitely be worth a lot more today!

Justwanttoweeinpeace · 13/09/2016 08:29

Loving all the pics, I love a good ring photo thread.

But one question. How do you all know how much your rings cost? I was chucked out of the shop whilst DH did the deed.

Were we weird?

MrsRaymondReddington · 13/09/2016 08:35

Justwant - I had to go and have a coffee while he paid for mine, after I had chosen it. I used to sell diamonds though so I had a good idea of the cost....and then it had to be listed on the house insurance.

paranormalish · 13/09/2016 09:05

My wife's ring is uninsured, there is no way I want to pay 1k a year to insure it, it is sentimental value and if she lost it I would replace with a cubic Zircona one as I ain't shelling out again.

TaylorSwiftMakesMyShitItch · 13/09/2016 09:07

I had no idea what mine cost when he proposed, when we came home from holiday I rang my jewellery insurers to put it on the policy and they asked for the purchase price and valuation. Not vulgar in the slightest, a necessary conversation to make sure my ring was correctly insured.

Sparklesilverglitter · 13/09/2016 10:22

I know how much mine is, as it was valued for insurance. I wouldn't not insure such a special item

Pinkheart5915 · 13/09/2016 10:30

justwant I know how much mine is worth as it had to be valued for insurance.

I didn't know DH was going to ask me to marry him so I was nowhere near the shop when he brought a ring

SanityAssassin · 13/09/2016 10:39

about £1200 over ten years ago. Wedding ring cost much more.

gemdrop84 · 13/09/2016 11:29

Under £20. Dh proposed 8 years ago just after dd was born. I adore it, dd hid it in her toy kitchen once for a couple of days when she was 3 and I was devastated! I've never cared how much it cost, dh wanted to get me a bridal ring set with a new ring to replace it when we got married but I told him I didn't want that. A price can't be put on what this ring represents to me.

How much did your engagement ring cost?
HapShawl · 13/09/2016 11:32

£50, he had it made by an artist friend and designed it with her help. It's perfect

ChippyDucks · 13/09/2016 11:33

About £500. He did however also spend £850 buying a ticket to Australia to propose, so while it might not be entirely the ring I would have chosen, I would never complain.

bilboteabaggin · 13/09/2016 11:39

Mine was around 500 hundred I think. It's not a classic engagement ring though I've never really like that sort of Jewellery it's some 17 century locket ring so I couldn't care less how much it cost as he knew me well enough to get something a bit different.

ClockMakerSue · 13/09/2016 11:50

About £2500. I know as we have to list it on home insurance. I love it because he had it made in Canada by a company that doesn't use anything close to blood diamonds and all the gold and stones are fair trade. This was more important to me than anything and it's beautiful too.

nightandthelight · 13/09/2016 13:27

£359 as we were young and broke :) However people tend to assume it's worth a lot more as we went for moissanite so it looks like a 1 carat solitaire diamond. Even the machine in the jewellers couldn't tell the difference Grin
