The Brave Babes Battle Bus - Giving Up Booze For Lent.

1000 replies

Mouseface · 25/03/2011 21:01

Hello.

I'm Mouse. Smile

We are a Bus load of posters with various relationships with the demon booze. Some are sober, some are not and some are inbetween.

So come say hi and meet the rest of The Babes, there's always plenty of room on the Bus, the doors are ALWAYS open.

No judgy pants are worn on this journey, pants yes and even the odd Tena Lady but always of the non judging variety. Grin

JWIM · 07/04/2011 09:29

Morning everyone.

Isindie - well done on choosing a meeting over booze. Enjoy that day 3 feeling.

Golly - best of luck with the appeal.

JWN - dinner outfit sounds very glam. Have a good day and no doubt a great evening too.

Today I will not be drinking and for now I am revelling in having a clear head and absence of guilt/worry.

MIFLAW · 07/04/2011 10:53

"I know there is lots spoken and written about the value of 12 steps and sponsors and home groups and such but on a very very basic level I find them somewhere to go in RL where there are a bunch of folks who are wrestling with the same problem I am and with whom I can drink tea until 9pm when my wine demon is normally beaten."

I totally agree - the benefits of the Steps etc are great for some; but EVERYONE can benefit from the existence of the meeting, just having somewhere to go.

I sometimes share in a meeting about when I was working in York one summer when I was 21 (my girlfriend lived there.) My manager, who was the first openly gay man I had really known (and also a big drinker) invited us both to a gay pub.

Now, back in the day, York was NOT a very "gay friendly" town and as far as I can see this was the only gay bar in the area. I had no idea what to expect - men snogging? Everyone in pink jumpers? cocktails with umbrellas? Obligatory rape on the dance floor?

In fact, I got in there and it was like every other pub in York - lots of men in very ordinary clothes drinking pints. But the difference was that, as other guys came in afterwards, you could see the relief on their faces as they came through the door. Here, at last, they could "drop the act" and be themselves.

The next place i ever saw that was in AA. AA is my very own provincial gay bar!

MIFLAW · 07/04/2011 10:54

"I had no idea what to expect - men snogging? Everyone in pink jumpers? cocktails with umbrellas? Obligatory rape on the dance floor?" Just to make absolutley clear that this is not my view of gay men and women now, or even then. I was just very naive and stupid when I was young (also par for the course in AA.)

MIFLAW · 07/04/2011 11:03

Golly

"I have occasionally wished that there were meetings later in the evening (starting at around 9ish I suppose) because then it would be so late by the time I left that the idea of drinking would be completely out of the window."

Have you thought of staying around to chat afterwards? Or seeing if any of the regulars go on somewhere for coffee or food afterwards? Both could help on that score without needing a different meeting.

Tristmum · 07/04/2011 11:06

Morning all

Golly - good luck with the appeal.

Isinde - wondered where you were last night; glad the meeting was helpful.

JaneS · 07/04/2011 11:12

Grin MIFLAW I love your account of that - makes a lot of sense too, when I'd finished grinning.

Seems I missed all the exciting wedding-related news - wow! I need to stick around more often.

mouseface · 07/04/2011 11:46

JWN! Shock You snitch! It wasn't me, I only dropped the crisps and spilt the oil, Zany trod it all into the carpet. Grin

IsinDe - WOW! Go you! Well done for getting to a meeting last night and not drinking. Smile

We've been to playgroup this morning and Nemo loved it.

Plus the bastard person who mis-sold me the train set has said that they will refund me 100% and is extremely sorry for the upset cause.

That's right matey, don't fuck mess with this Mouse Grin

Hydrotherapy for me next. I really need it today too, very sore this morning. Has anyone had an MRI scan? I've got to have one on my back.

Anyway, fab that those who said they weren't drinking managed it last night. Well done Babes. Smile

Missed the party here last night:(
Truth time, had 4 vodka's and diet coke last night!

mouseface · 07/04/2011 12:04

What brought that on Obrigada? What made you pick that voddy up?

You okay? xx

OP posts:
MIFLAW · 07/04/2011 12:19

Obrigada

Why did you drink?

second - and maybe more helpful - why did you have four? Did you plan to have four? Or was it meant to be "just one or two"?

If the latter, does the discrepancy tell you anything?

Zanywany · 07/04/2011 12:33

Morning everyone

In my defence Isindie Mouse threw the crisps at me and I accidently trod on one whilst running away. Good news re train set

Still full of a cold today and DP goes away for a week tomorrow Sad so going to try and tidy up the garden and paint the kitchen. Not at the same time though.

dementedma · 07/04/2011 12:47

Afternoon all, just my usual checking in....it's virtually impossible to get any time on the computer at home in the eveings when I am having to share it with DC who can't be unplugged for more than 10 mins lest they faint with the shock!

Feeling pleased that I managed to handle the cravings last night depite letting myself get really over tired and over hungry (having tea at 9.45pm is not ideal) Combined with engaging with the familiar battle with DD I could have murdered a bottle of wine at high speed.

Not having given in is good - having put myself in such a vulnerable position is not good.

Today I will not be drinking.....and I will be more organised!

GollyHolightly · 07/04/2011 14:56

Fafternoon Smile

Phew. Well, that was gruelling (the school appeal). It was very formal around a heavy tribunal type table with lots of people in the room. The bloke representing the school who was essentially putting the case for them not being able to take more pupils was bloody rubbish Grin I thought I had managed to show that they could (they are a pupil down from last year in the year group we're after) but the panel decided that they had proved their case, so we had to go to stage two where we gave the reasons why our dd's need to go there overrides their need not to have more pupils. I think it went ok, but we'll have no idea until we get a letter which will go in the post later today. Gahhhh.

Good thing is that I wouldn't normally wind down from this kind of stress with a drink but I'm gearing myself up for a meeting tonight instead. Mustn't forget to ring my sponsor at tea time, because i forgot yesterday Blush

CailinBainne · 07/04/2011 15:04

Golly phew...and grrrr on your behalf....

Good luck

GollyHolightly · 07/04/2011 15:15

Thanks Cailin! Sods law that the postman will come when there's no-one in the house tomorrow Hmm so I'll have to wait until i get home from work to see if the letter has arrived - if it has I will have to work fast to get the school to accept that they will take her on the first day of term after easter Confused

It's not our last chance saloon thankfully, if it's a no we will be sending her to the school that her big sister is at which is an excellent school (and has places! Shock ) the drawback is that it's not in our city. It's a 12mile bus ride away Confused. It's a long story but the gist of it is that we needed to get the older one completely out of the area for school each day and away from some of the negative influences effecting her behaviour. I'd prefer not to have dd2 having to do the long journey every day which is why we're jumping through hoops to get a place at the nearer school. Either way she won't be staying at the hellhole she's at now.

mouseface · 07/04/2011 17:10

Crossing my fingers for you Golly Smile

I'm pooped! Far too much done in my hydrotherapy class today, what with that and playgroup and then a walk around the castle and on to the park.......

I was talking to my physio who has said chances are I'll need an epidural for the pain in my back. Oh well, didn't have time for one with Nemo so I guess I'm owed one? Grin

How are we all on this beautiful spring evening?

OP posts:
munkymaz · 07/04/2011 17:44

Hey mouse
Sounds like a full on day in your neck of the woods. Glad Nemo enjoyed playgroup and bloody good news about the train set fiasco!

Bit of a crap day at work, everyone totally demoralised and pondering their futures but hey ho, it's lovely and sunny here, washing hung out, gonna start tea soon. Minor wobble for a soothing glass of red has passed for now.

Evening to the rest of the babes, hope your day has been a good one Smile

mouseface · 07/04/2011 18:04

Hey Maz

Glad your wobble has gone, sorry about the work situation.
