Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you long to hear Pip again, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3853783--The-Archers-spoilers-thread-5-Cant-wait-for-7-02pm-Join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @LillianGish and @PersephonePromotesEquanimity for the title suggestions.

Current events: as @Bailey0703 has astutely spotted, it's Anti-Slavery Day tomorrow - could this herald the beginning of the end of the horses storyline? I do hope so. Horrible stuff, but what a blow for Kirsty. They're laying on the dramatic irony with trowel at the moment.

What do we think will happen to Alice and Chris? I can't see this pregnancy going to term and ending well. Sad I don't think the marriage will survive either, giving Brian a chance to revisit his classic line about having to treat this as Alice's starter marriage. Grin

Will Elizabeth end up on a date with Vince Casey? That would put the cat among the pigeons at Lower Loxley.

Over to you ...

Would probably help it I listened in right order, was listening via Sounds. Also if teenagers would be quiet and let me listen in peace. No I don’t want to see somebody dance on Tik tok. I have important listening to do.

theThreeofWeevils · 22/10/2020 00:05

Imagine if the Widow Pargetter lost LL (?the maintenance bills just got too much?); it ends up being the property of Vince and ... Freddie is disinherited!
Not going to happen as LL is not and never has been Widderbeth's. Freddie is The Heir. Elizabeth basically just works there. OK, she also managed a minor child's interests, but effectively she is irrelevant. I live for the day when young Fred boots out his witch of a sister, her aging Cicisbeo, and his wanton mother. And throws a REALLY GOOD party.

Roysnewshirt · 22/10/2020 07:50

Lily may live in a stately home but clearly has no class and is turning into a nasty little snob. I don’t object to her having reservations about her mum dating VC but I don’t like the idea of her turning up at an event and stage-whispering that VC is a slimeball. No wonder Lizzie was furious. She must have been mortified by her daughter’s lack of manners. Perhaps Lily deserves little better than the social-climbing CMR after all!

R4 · 22/10/2020 08:46

LL is not and never has been Widderbeth's.
I know but she is chief executive officer of the trust or entail or whatever it is. Presumably the estate could go bust or have to massively down-scale, just like any other person or company.

Excellent start to the morning - thank you, Three!Star

However, you raise an interesting possibility ... Technically Lily would need to be in possession of a husband, for CMR to take on the role you allot him. Just imagine that! Lily finds someone to marry (perhaps a stonkingly rich nobody, for the sake of the family finances) but CMR somehow persuades her to keep him in residence as her little side-hustle.

Day just got better ...

@DoctorTwo

It's the same actor, but she's learned, during lockdown, to talk properly. This might make her character bearable in the short term.
She still speaks in a strange way and nothing other than a dedding personality change could make her character bearable.

I liked the old Pip, because she was so unlikeable, but can't stand ythe current one.

MikeUniformMike · 22/10/2020 10:39

with a view to running off to Coronation St
send her to Walford pdq

MikeUniformMike · 22/10/2020 10:43

Over lockdown it seems that Pip has learnt how to act without bizarre intonation and pauses
Really, can't say I noticed.
, but Harrison still sounds like a dullard. No improvement for him
I quite like Harrison.

Anyone else wondering who the hell is running face-to-face seminars these days, especially ones that any random can turn up at without pre-booking? I know this was recorded some weeks ago, but even when it looked as if Covid might be getting under control every seminar I ever came across was online.

Especially one without strict social distancing rules, Lily mentioned Vince whispering in her mothers ear. I can’t imagine any event organiser could allow such Covid insecure practices without risking a fine or such.
TheSilveryPussycat · 22/10/2020 16:31

Yes I thought the same. Perhaps they thought "bugger it, we need to push on with the pre-Covid planned (and aleady written) plot developments regardless."

Madcats · 22/10/2020 16:57

The R4 continuity announcer keeps mentioning something about the episode having been recorded(?) before the latest Covid restrictions.

There have been quite a lot of instances, such as the seminar, which haven't been "allowed" for ages and ages. I must make a point of listening out to what they say tonight, but I wonder whether the editor is resurrecting some bits and pieces of storylines and recordings that they hadn't completed pre-lockdown?

Taswama · 22/10/2020 17:51

I proper LOL'd at Lily telling her mum off for her lack of social distancing! BOOP for that!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/10/2020 18:41

What Lily has clearly failed to realise is that Elizabeth had perfected the "attack as a means of defence" gambit before Lily was born or even thought of.

Lily is going to have to up her game if she expects to play the guilt stakes against an expert.

Darker · 22/10/2020 19:12

Bit soon to have Vince round. Have Vince and Lizzie even DTD yet?

MikeUniformMike · 22/10/2020 19:14

I

Crikey nice bit of casual sexism.

It was Lizzy who pulled LL out of its downward spiral into bankruptcy, turning it into an actual business with Julia fighting her and undermining her every step of the way. Nigel was morally supportive and hard working but had a brain the size of a peapod.

Lily - yes she can be silly and snobbish at times but she was the one left supporting Elizabeth and the business when Freddie dealt his way into prison. All she actually knows about Vince is David whining about losing out to him in business.

This evening of the two of them Freddie was a far nastier little snob, banging on about his ancestry, revered family (which came close to losing LL through bad management were it not for the peasant Elizabeth) and telling Vince he was a peasant.

C8H10N4O2 · 22/10/2020 19:57

Sorry posted too soon - I think Nigel would have been disappointed in both of them tonight but especially Freddie. Nigel was never a snob, thick as mince but never a snob.

I ran one this week.

Although it was all pre-booked and carefully socially distanced!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/10/2020 21:48

C8H10N4O2
and telling Vince he was a peasant.

Point of order: the person who used the word peasant about Vince, was Vince.

"What right has a peasant like Vince Casey to set foot in a place like this" were not Freddie's words; they were Vince's own.

R4 · 22/10/2020 21:49

I wonder if today will be a turning point for Frilly. They were trying to point out to VC how superior they were but all they could do was boast about something a relative did four centuries ago. Perhaps they will start pondering about their lives and where they are going.

TheSilveryPussycat · 22/10/2020 21:52

Awhile back, some of you thought Vince might have seen Elizabeth's dating profile, IIRC. Do you think Vince could have had a fake profile, and was in fact the date who never showed?

C8H10N4O2 · 22/10/2020 22:26

"What right has a peasant like Vince Casey to set foot in a place like this" were not Freddie's words; they were Vince's own

But Vince was spot on. That is exactly where Freddie was going with his obnoxious little rant about his superior antecedents and the family pile. Freddie lacks the brains or the work ethic to run LL without either his mother or Lily. Nigel never lacked a work ethic or common courtesy.

I find Freddie interesting because that overwhelming entitlement and veneer and background enables him to get away with behaviour which would have life long consequences for a George. Occasionally he has a moment of being pleasant (although only to his family and social peers) but he reverts rapidly. And yet Lily who does at least have a brain and work ethic is the one so frequently derided as silly, snobbish and ridiculous.

MollyButton · 22/10/2020 23:28

Oh I think you all missed what this episode was really about: Vince Cassy has an estranged daughter called Bethan. Estranged because he didn't approve of her relationship with an "unsuitable man". What if that man was CMR? And Lily is at least the third of his little "flings".

I don't think CMR and Vince have met yet.
