Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Joy's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks for all the input on title suggestions. I'd missed the significance of 111, but @R4 and DDD, our resident numerologist, were right on to it. Strongly tempted by Bore's suggestion but couldn't resist the chance to mention my favourite ever Archers character, Nelson Gabriel. Have not managed to incorporate a cricket reference, so you'll have to read up on that for yourselves. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson_(cricket)

I wonder if this thread will last till Joe's funeral.

Lily is 19, nearly 20. Although people on here no doubt were married, had bought their own house & had a child by the time they were her age she is still very young and inexperienced.

People of all ages go about things the wrong way, she’s upset about Ella messing Johnny around and wanted to help him. I’m pleased Johnny had a go at her as it will presumably help her question her relationship with Russ.

Calling her, or anyone a ‘rancid little bitch’ seems deeply unpleasant.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/11/2019 07:37

My guess would be that Leonard is thinking along 'companionship' lines and is going to be pleasantly surprised.

Motoko · 18/11/2019 08:20

Erm, when he insisted on taking her shopping to a town she had not asked to go (so she would have to fill his car with petrol) and where she did not want to be, and then calmed her down from the panic attack he had caused her to have.

Yes, but it's still the reason that started Lizzie being enthralled by CMR.

Motoko · 18/11/2019 08:32

Talking of sex in older years, I remember my nan saying that she'd only seen my grandad naked a couple of times, with one of those being shortly before he died and she was nursing him. Knowing the type of people they were, they wouldn't have been having sex at their age, and Grandad was only 64 when he died.

I think in that generation, a lot of people wouldn't dream of having sex in their later years. Pensioners now, are the swinging 60s generation, so possibly less inhibited, but I think having an active sex life in your 80s, is still more unusual than not.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/11/2019 09:13

Shock My husband's 64. He runs several times a week and is as fit as a flea. As I waved him off this morning in his jeans, t-shirt, trainers and hoodie I did briefly wonder if anyone seeing him from behind with his hood up might be surprised to see him from the front.

It is fascinating how the increase in life expectancy has come hand in hand with old age no longer beginning at 60 and far more people remaining very physically active and fit into their 80s (my parents are fortunately a case in point).

I also really disliked that description of Lily. No need for sexist insults. Plenty to criticise for her without descending to that.

Hear, hear. I like Lily, even if she is an interfering busybody.
It's about time she saw CMR for what he is.

New thread needed soon - title ideas?

Could we have DoctorTwo’s Star Quelle beau de lollox Star applied to a new situation, now Carmen Haveago is history?

Beveren · 18/11/2019 10:43

She rallied round because she had no other option and nowhere to go.

But the point is that she rallied round competently and effectively. She could, for instance, have turned up ostensibly to look after Lizzie and spent her time making a big show of fussing around her whilst doing nothing to help with running LL. I guess in part I just like competent people, incompetents (like Eddie when he goes in for his get-rich-quick schemes) just make me uncomfortable.

R4 · 18/11/2019 11:57

Wildlife on Four: Jonneh is wild at Lily, Phoebe rewilds by Occam, Joy is in the wilderness and David is bewildered by a marriage proposal.

SurpriseSparDay · 18/11/2019 12:09

Ooooh!

Impressive, R4!

R4 · 18/11/2019 12:37

Thank you.Smile But it can't really beat Quelle beau de lollox.

MereDintofPandiculation · 18/11/2019 13:18

It is fascinating how the increase in life expectancy has come hand in hand with old age no longer beginning at 60 and far more people remaining very physically active and fit into their 80s On the other hand, the increase in life expectancy hasn't been matched by the increase in healthy life expectancy, so the majority of us face more years in poor health.

LillianGish · 18/11/2019 15:47

I didn't find it surprising to hear Leonard sounding out David about proposing to Jill - he has rightly identified the number one stumbling block to this plan. Much better for David to be forewarned than for it to be sprung on him. I thought he got excellent feedback from Pip (unusually) so hopefully will be more on board with the idea now. I think it will be important to Jill that her family give their approval so Leonard gets full marks from me for his attempt to smooth the path. I wasn't sure why he had to be caught with his trousers off like some kind of French farce or whether it was just very heavy-handed symbolism on the part of the SW hinting at his future relationship with Jill. I don't think there's any suggestion that the pair of them will be living at Brookfield, they both have their own homes and surely the whole point is that Jill is finally allowed to have a life of her own in her twilight years (how old is she - 85?).

birdsdestiny · 18/11/2019 15:55

I think the trousers thing can be explained by the scriptwriters endless obsession with bodily parts and double entendres.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 18/11/2019 15:57

I think it was "bitch" that was offensive, yes? Would "rancid little horror" be acceptable instead?

LillianGish · 18/11/2019 16:09

Of course birdsdestiny - I'd forgotten this was Carry On Up the Am.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 18/11/2019 17:15

Where's Ruth these days?

With such momentous stuff going on, you'd think she would have something to say about it all.

If Jill moves out, Ruth might actually have to cook now and again, or even do some laundry ShockConfused

Where will it all end......

Choccyp1g · 18/11/2019 17:21

Maybe David could cook or do the laundry.

MikeUniformMike · 18/11/2019 17:25

Why should it be Ruth who has to cook?
She works on the farm as much as David does.

Taswama · 18/11/2019 17:32

Can someone explain Phoebe rewilds by Occam please?

LillianGish · 18/11/2019 17:39

Phoebe rewilds by Occam is a reference to Phoebe's allusion to Occam's razor theory at the last rewinding meeting (presumably after the SW decided they needed to insert some evidence she'd done PPE at Oxford Hmm)

Motoko · 18/11/2019 17:39

Phoebe mentioned Occam, where the simplest answer is usually the correct one. So instead of them trying to get patches of land here and there, they go for the BL land and have it all in one place.

MissBarbary · 18/11/2019 17:59

BL will of course for some vague good PR stump up. (Although I hope they don't)
