Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Joy's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks for all the input on title suggestions. I'd missed the significance of 111, but @R4 and DDD, our resident numerologist, were right on to it. Strongly tempted by Bore's suggestion but couldn't resist the chance to mention my favourite ever Archers character, Nelson Gabriel. Have not managed to incorporate a cricket reference, so you'll have to read up on that for yourselves. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson_(cricket)

I wonder if this thread will last till Joe's funeral.

Yes, Jonny didn't shy away from pointing out the reality of Lily and Russ' relationship, although Lily was trying to help him. The messenger often gets shot down though, when the person is hurt by the news and lashes out. However, I'm sure Jonny will be mortified at saying that, when he finally realises that Bella has been cheating on him. He'd feel even worse if he found out that others knew about it, but never said anything.

I'm glad Pip didn't get sucked in to David's horror about Leonard and Jill marrying, although I don't think Leonard should have mentioned it. He's obviously trying to do the honourable thing, but I worry that if David says anything other than "Whatever makes Mum happy, I'm happy with", Leonard won't marry Jill. And I want them to marry (assuming there isn't anything nefarious about Leonard).

Still, at least Leonard was able to ask David in the same episode, even though it took a while to get him to shut up long enough to actually listen. I really hate that trope that is so overused in TA, it gives me the rage.

Motoko
Lizzie seems enthralled by CMR. Not sure why
It stems from when she had the panic attack when she and Russ were shopping, and he calmed her down.

Erm, when he insisted on taking her shopping to a town she had not asked to go (so she would have to fill his car with petrol) and where she did not want to be, and then calmed her down from the panic attack he had caused her to have.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 17/11/2019 19:54

Lily was not trying to help Johnny! She was gratuitously trying to run his life in a nosy-parkering way. I hope his having rightly called her on her own behaviour may make her think a little for the first time in her self-absorbed life.

MissBarbary · 17/11/2019 19:57

It pains me to say this but BOOP Pip.

echt · 17/11/2019 20:07

Jill will get offended about Leonard having sounded out David first and kick him into touch. Is sill for David to agonise about what to say other than good luck.

Lily will eventually get rid of CMR and hitch up with Johnn-eh.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 17/11/2019 20:15

Johnny absolutely does not deserve to be lumbered with Lily.

birdsdestiny · 17/11/2019 20:20

I like Lily, I think she would be better on her own for a while.

ADarkandStormyKnight · 17/11/2019 20:25

Yes I hope Lily dumps CMR and goes to university next year.

echt · 17/11/2019 20:44

Johnny absolutely does not deserve to be lumbered with Lily

So true but then the SWs love inflicting tiresome women on men who've done nothing merit it, e.g. Kate and Jakob.

Pierrettelasanguinaire · 17/11/2019 20:46

I like Lily

In God's name, why? She's a rancid little bitch and always has been.

BertrandRussell · 17/11/2019 20:50

So if you were Lily would you not have told Johnny?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 17/11/2019 22:12

Me, BertrandRussell? No I would not have. Never, ever tell a man his chosen woman is a wrong 'un. If you are right he will never forgive you, and if you are wrong he will never forgive you.

MissBarbary · 17/11/2019 22:21

I would not have rushed pell mell to tell him on the basis of one incident.

I don't like Lily. She's a silly, vacuous little girl.

birdsdestiny · 17/11/2019 22:28

I don't really know how to respond to the words rancid little bitch to be honest.

TooLateThePhalarope · 17/11/2019 22:37

That description is uncalled for but I've never understood the love for Lily on here. She's supposed to be the clever twin, when really her cleverness amounts to little more than a talent for passing exams.

Beveren · 17/11/2019 22:44

What redeems Lily for me is the way she rallied round very competently last year when Elizabeth was falling apart. That's one of the reasons that it annoys me that she's pratting around with telephone selling, she's obviously capable of much more.

BertrandRussell · 17/11/2019 22:46

What a vile description for even a fictional woman.....

R4 · 17/11/2019 22:52

I'm still unquieted by Leonard. Did you notice that he didn't say to David, "I love your mother and, from the hints she's dropped, I think if I ask her to marry me she'll say yes". It was phrased as "she wants me to ask her."
It felt all wrong to me.

MissBarbary · 17/11/2019 22:58

What damns Lily for me is the deceitful way she "rallied round". She came back because she and CMR were broke and about to be evicted. She then played the dutiful daughter card for all it was worth to her mother and Ambridge in general. And don't forget Lizzie had to pay off the bailiffs for the unpaid rent CMR and Lily ran up.

She rallied round because she had no other option and nowhere to go.

CodenameVillanelle · 17/11/2019 23:02

Lily is awful. She's spoilt, immature and full of herself. But 'rancid little bitch' is disgusting language.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/11/2019 23:25

I reckon the business of Leonard asking David's 'blessing' was mainly just a device to highlight David's oddness about Jill (hilarious moment 'undoing buttons and .....things' )

I don't think Leonard is a wrong 'un - my take is that he's very fond of Jill. But I thought there was something he said which suggested he's more interested in companionship than anything else.

TheSilveryPussycat · 17/11/2019 23:34

He did mention companionship, yes. But he was hardly going to say to David that he wanted unbridled sex with Jill.

SurpriseSparDay · 18/11/2019 05:27

No idea about Leonard’s motivation but ‘companionship’ may have been primarily the SWs word rather than his. I was disappointed to hear it. Years ago anyone over about 40 who dared to fall in love and get married would face some oaf spluttering “Oh, for companionship of course?”. Because the idea of anyone so old having an active sex life was abhorrent. It appears the age for this has moved up - but the attitude is still prevalent.

Perhaps the SW will carry this through to Leonard being uninterested in a ‘full’ relationship with Jill - but I hope not.

Etinox · 18/11/2019 06:08

I’ve searched back but can’t find what CRM/ CMR stands for? Creepy Ross Man?

SurpriseSparDay · 18/11/2019 06:18

CMR - ‘Call me Russ’.

From when he was being introduced to the wider Archers clan at a Brookfield family lunch. Ben (+ Josh maybe) was merciless. ‘Sir’ was employed IIRC. And ‘Mr Jones’.
