hi everyon thinking of moving up country to possbly Suttpn in Ashfield or Bolsover which is the better

OP posts:
Perseimmion · 20/02/2025 20:34

I would look at Chesterfield, or a village like Selston.

Liesmorelies · 20/02/2025 20:57

I really wouldn't want to live in Sutton-in-Ashfield I'm afraid. Bolsover is a bit nicer I think but I don't know it as well. Sutton is pretty grim.

Ineedanewsofa · 20/02/2025 21:05

Sutton, Kirkby and Mansfield are all pretty grim to be honest. I know people that live in Annesley which sounds slightly nicer and Ravenshead which is apparently very nice - the whole area is pretty deprived on the whole however and the schools are awful (everyone I know round there sends their kids private)

Fizxy · 20/02/2025 21:20

😬 I'd avoid both to be honest...

Sutton especially is really deprived and has nothing at all really going for it. Apart from cheap housing. But there's a reason it's so affordable...

LittleHangleton · 20/02/2025 21:32

House prices are low in Sutton in Ashfield. That should tell you something. It's a socially deprived area, closest school has been shit for a long, long time (although is looking to be improving after the latest trust takover) and the shopping area is run down. Does have an ice rink, that's unusual tho.

Are you moving there because you get more house for your money? If it's due yo work, let me know the area you're working and budget for a home - I'll find you somewhere better :-)

oggdog · 20/02/2025 23:51

Have a look at areas bordering the Peak District, or in Staffordshire.

Derbyshire is much nicer than north Nottinghamshire.

hi the plan is to move up that way to give our son a better life who suffers with a mental illness so looking for the best deal in new homes, open to any areas and sugestions, thanks.

I would look in the South/East Side of Nottinghamshire, the opposite side to Sutton in Ashfield. Much better area, still lots of countryside. You'll get less house for your money thro because these are much more desirable areas.

Newbuild estates to look for that fit the brief of near countryside:
Radcliffe on Trent
Newton
Bingham
Cotgrave

Also (less desirable but still ok)
Burton Joyce
Newark
Calverton

Here's some newbuilds I found:

3 Bed Radcliffe £337

3 Bed Newton £325

3 Bed Bingham £320

3 Bed Semi Cotgrave

4 Bed Burton Joyce £335k

4 Bed Newark (Middleweek) £330k
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/155538176

4 Bed Newark (Fernwood) £331k

5 bed Calverton £350

Does your son currently live you, and you're all moving together, or does he already live in the area? Because others have said, it's not great. Derbyshire side of the M1 is nicer.

MissAtomicBomb1 · 21/02/2025 22:01

Look at the area around Belper, Derbyshire. Edge of the Derbyshire Dales & Peaks.
Sutton/Mansfield really aren't nice.

Hi what is Clay Cross like to live

I grew up near Sutton in Ashfield and my mum lives near Clay Cross. Agree with others that Sutton is really run down and deprived. Clay Cross is too to a degree, but has the benefit of being on the edge of the Peaks. If you're interested in going more Chesterfield direction then South Wingfield is quite nice.

PuppyMonkey · 22/02/2025 10:55

I don’t understand why you’d move from Somerset to Sutton in Ashfield for better open spaces.Confused

Property is cheap there because the areas aren't great.
Not somewhere I would live by choice.
How about West Yorkshire? There are some nice areas you could get a decent property for your money

we have basicly travelled all round somerset/devon and cornwall and would like one final move and it seemed a good idea to move up to the peaks area and start a new life up there for us all.

The Peak District is wonderful. Sutton in Ashfield isn’t wonderful.

If you're looking at the new builds near Kings Mill Hospital then they're gorgeous, with easy access to the motorway, 40 mins into Derbyshire. I know they're classed as SIA.
The town centre is awful though.

StMarie4me · 22/02/2025 13:40

I also happen to know that there is excellent MH support in that area.

Thesnoozingsighthound · 22/02/2025 13:50

Have you visited Sutton yet? It’s not a place I’d relocate to for the lifestyle or health benefits to put it mildly.

Look at the other side of the M1 if easy access to the Peaks is what you want.

I grew up in the Sutton area and whenever I’ve been down to Somerset, Dorset and Devon it feels like a whole different world to post-industrial north Notts! Living in Frome is a day dream of mine 😁

If you would consider the Staffordshire Peaks, then Leek has a slightly Frome vibe to it.

CerealPosterHere · 22/02/2025 13:50

Have yo7 looked at dronfield? Never been but a colleague lives there and likes it, it’s the right area for the Peak and I think would be in budget. And it has to be nicer than Sutton in Ashfield.
