@oggdog try local reddit for different opinions. MN is erm .. a bit particular shall we say. According to some (not necessarily on this thread) whole swathes of the country are no go areas and akin to the south bronx.

I have lived in chesterfield and currently live in Sheffield. I wouldn’t touch that area you write initially looking at, very closed minded area. I used to work in Shirebrook which isn’t too far away from some of the places you mentioned, some lovely people but def have a tinge of bnp about them. I wouldn’t go clay cross, again a run down ex mining town. The issue with getting near the peaks is less new builds and increase costs. My mum and dad moved to Ashbourne area which is nice. Dronfield is pretty ok and is very close to the peak district and sits between Sheffield and chesterfield. Theres some nice little villages around

hi what about Newark area

Newark as a town is dying on its arse imho…..gone downhill since M&S closed.

But still some shops and not as “rough” as some of the other places you’ve mentioned previously. Certainly has some not so nice areas but generally I’d feel fairly safe walking around. But yes, a long way to the Peak District still, though other nice countryside around I guess.

I've lived all over the world. Including the third world.

Sutton in Ashfield is the worst place I've lived by a significant margin.

@LittleHangleton I did send over the new builds in Calverton before- close too for Sherwood Forest

Crikeyalmighty · 02/03/2025 16:42

Honestly OP, look at chesterfield again - I think I sent a few. It's not amazing but it's not dreadful and reasonably good for the peaks - Newark area okish too but not hilly as is calverton which I sent you over , and handy for Nottingham

hi what about Newark area

I'll big-up Newark. While I'm not from the area, I've been a few times. The town centre is good, larger than average shopping area but not city-sized. Good market, plenty independent stores. Nottingham City centre not too far if you wanted a city. Good culture in the area too, some beautiful old architecture and a castle.

I really like the surrounding villages to Newark rather than Newark itself. Fernwood/Balderton has a huge newbuild estate. I'd go Trent side of Newark though, Winthorpe, Muskham, maybe Farndon, round there. Just be aware of flood risks.

Crikeyalmighty · 02/03/2025 18:02

@LittleHangleton I agree

Newark is right on the Trent flood plain. The major roads are usually always affected by floods after heavy rain, even when the villages aren't. It's just a way of life though, locals very used to it due to the nature of living so close to the Trent basin.

See the maps here for detailed info, you want the Balderton one for Fernwood:

https://www.newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk/parishfloodmaps/

It's got Zone 3 flood areas (flood most years) to the left and right, but not directly on the village. As I said, it's transport most likely to be affected by floods rather than homes. But some homes might.

Just looked at these, I don’t know about Fernwood but see the village is out the flood zone. Saying that according to their collingham map the village there is just out the flood zone but some houses were about 5ft or more under water a couple of years ago. Saying that collingham is much closer to the Trent.

LittleHangleton · 02/03/2025 19:13

The floods were especially bad in 2023. I drive through Newark on my way to work, so was aware. But the community banded together.

Collingham is a fair way out ftom Balderton/Fernwood. I know Farndon flooded, that's the other side of Newark though, closer to the Trent.

Lovely countryside in the local area though, in all directions really.

autumn1610 · 02/03/2025 20:26

@oggdog ive no experience of Newark I’m afraid. I’ve had a look on rightmove and there are some new builds in the chesterfield area. Chesterfield isn’t too bad in my opinion, you have easy routes to the different areas of the Peak District, villages like Bakewell, chatsworth estate etc. but you also have bigger cities close by, Nottingham, Derby and Sheffield. Good links to the M1

@oggdog I think you are prioritising a certain style and probably price too of a particular house , rather than an area that's nice to live in or has much going on - it is of course totally your choice if you want to do that - but unless it's changed drastically it was pretty rough and not much going for it - I think you need to take a trip and look round these ex mining town areas if you don't know them. You may think it's perfectly ok , it's hard for me to say

Personally I prefer the one I sent you in Ross on Wye- much more pleasant -

hi we have a need for a 4 bedroom house, we have a budget, but as far as area we are completley open minded where it is, as long as it is in a safe area with easy access to shops by foot.

OP posts:
Snippit · 03/03/2025 00:22

I live in the West side of Chesterfield, Ashgate, Walton, Somersall, Brookside, Brampton which are all really good areas, on the edge of the Peak District, 15 minute drive to Chatsworth House, beautiful countryside.

Getting a 4 bedroomed new build for your budget probably isn’t possible. Hasland isn’t too bad, it’s a little bit cheaper.

If you see anything and aren’t sure about the area message me, I really don’t mind. It’s important for you to find a suitable area for your needs, 🤗

lottiegarbanzo · 03/03/2025 06:13

Hi OP,

My suggestion would be, why not start a new thread based on your criteria and a more general idea of area? So 'where to live within half an hour's drive of the Peak District, four-bed house, budget £330,000?'

Then explain in your OP your other needs e.g shops and amenities in walking distance. And if it's important to be able to go on walks direct from home, say that - that's very different from access to the Peaks, which will inevitably be by car (or bus, or train).

That will encourage people to make suggestions based on local knowledge, that you might not have thought about.

Do it on a new thread, to attract wider knowledge.

Must it be a new build, or just a house that doesn't need any work? Those are different things.

Is it important to have countryside on your doorstep, that you can walk into direct from your home? That's quite a specific demand - access depends on local footpath provision, as well as proximity of countryside. You can live on the edge of large cities and have great local walks, parks and footpath access into countryside e.g parts of Sheffield. Or in the middle of fields with no footpaths.

@oggdog ok - so as an example tell me why you would discount the house in Ross on wye over somewhere like bolsover - ? That would help me understand

Bolsover by the way looks not like what you search on google 'images' - if you notice they show the castle all the time- but it's the only thing I remember as being nice- it's lots of very close together pit houses

fussychica · 03/03/2025 16:02

Try Wingerworth on the edge of Chesterfield, there's been lots of development since I moved away so I'm not sure it's still as nice as it used to be. Good areas of Chesterfield were Sommersall, Walton and Ashgate.
Personally I wouldn't want to live in some of the areas you've mentioned even if they aren't far from the Peaks and beautiful countryside.

Have you holidayed in Sutton, Mansfield, Ripley or Bolsover?

Crikeyalmighty · 03/03/2025 19:19

@oggdog ok I get that - out of interest have you actually been to the Peak District area before? Is that why you are suggesting it?
