It makes me so sad to read all these comments - I am from the Ashfield area and yes there are bad parts like anywhere but the people who live here are mostly kind hardworking people.

@oggdog I think you would really have to go and see what you think.

The thing is it's hard for me to know what you would consider ok- you say you live in Somerset, if you live in somewhere like wells or Bath or Taunton I think that area ( with exception of Retford) may be quite a culture shock - if you don't and live somewhere towards Weston or Bridgwater you may think it's not that bad.

i know what you mean we live in Wellington.

is that sutton ashfield as there are some nice houses going up and sounds quite near to everything as well, the dev we are reading about is in stanton hill

@oggdog yes we are on the outskirts, can’t comment on staton hill but in Ashfield you can count on the residents to be friendly. There’s a real sense of community especially if someone needs help/advice.

And that's why I don't think you would like some of the places you are looking at - wellington is nice.

I'm being frank OP @Toothspots is correct there are some lovely people in that area - I still have my son there (Mansfield woodhouse) and friends- but I think you would find it all a bit grim relative to wellington - I'm loathe to suggest it but I actually think where my son lives in Mansfield woodhouse would actually suit you more and has a lot of amenities on the doorstep plus the small high st is quite pleasant - very easy to get out to Sherwood Forest etc - these aren't brand new but pretty newish and I think would suit more

If you're looking for access to the Peaks, there's this: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/158610818#/?channel=RES_BUY . It is slightly over budget but ticks all other boxes. There are cheaper properties nearby. Also good public transport and Fox Valley is quite a low stress upmarket retail park

you obviously have not been to Wellie latley, all shops are shutting, no banks, really becoming run down.

OP posts:
Crikeyalmighty · 07/03/2025 21:20

@oggdog if you think it's run down then you really won't like some of the places you mention. Haven't been for about 3 years to wellington - problem isn't finding you a house in places you would like, it's the 4 beds and new build that's the issue

yes your right, there are the 4 bed new builds in Ripley and Sutton Ashfield, the rest of the areas seem pretty dodgy or on flood plains

what do you know about hartshorne

OP posts:
beakyboo10 · 07/03/2025 21:43

If you're thinking of Ripley or Somercotes perhaps look at the village of Swanwick which is between the two of them. There are lots of new build houses (although you will not get a brand new 4 bed for £330,000). You might get a newer style one.

It's close to Butterley reservoir for walks, close to the A38 and not far from Ripley and Alfreton for your large supermarkets. It does have a few facilities and a bit more of a village feel.

what do you know about hartshorne

Hartshorne is basically Swad, but you’re on the northern more rural edge. You’ve got National Trust Calke Abbey estate just down the road and a couple of reservoirs.

Nowhere near the Peaks really, but the nearby countryside is nice.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/03/2025 13:43

Of the two I would prefer Ripley -and it's closer to Peak District -

Hi just seen a second hand house in Brimington Chesterfield do you know much about that area or stick to Ripley

OP posts:
Crikeyalmighty · 08/03/2025 15:46

I honestly don't know it ! but I've never heard it mentioned in bad terms- certainly that chesterfield area isn't too bad and decent for being close to Peak District - way better than other areas you've been mentioning. Seriously OP if you can get a decent fairly new one in the better places , it's a much better bet.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/03/2025 15:50

This is a nice picture overview though that was on one of the houses for sale in that area and it looks way more acceptable

That's a picture i found on one of the houses for sale in Brimington - was just showing you for a pic of the area - it was a pic on the listing for this one

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/149472911#/?channel=RES_BUY

This one below is in a nice area if I remember correctly and I think is rather nice for the money too - not a big new estate either - I think you could do way worse. It's all very neutral too -

The other thing is with one a few years old any initial teething issues ( and sometimes there can be lots with new builds) tend to have been ironed out and sorted.

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/147699230

I definitely think the chesterfield area would be a decent option for you - it's very friendly too

@oggdog I think that's a cracking nice house with a good layout and nice neutral decor and the area whilst not 'funky or exciting' does have a few pubs and corner shops, a few cafes , a big supermarket, a chemist etc and very easy into chesterfield for proper shopping - which may be all you want/need. It certainly is way more appealing than other areas you've been looking at and easy for the Peak District. Chesterfield isn't too bad at all - certainly nicer than Sutton in Ashfield in my opinion. For the budget you have and the fact you like the Peak District - I think that would work . Very easy into some lovely places like Baslow too .

I do think looking just 'off new' would make sense too -

Have you sold yet?

If you're considering second-hand-new, lots of better areas will be opened up as options
