Sutton, Kirkby and Mansfield are all pretty grim to be honest. I know people that live in Annesley which sounds slightly nicer and Ravenshead which is apparently very nice - the whole area is pretty deprived on the whole however and the schools are awful (everyone I know round there sends their kids private)

hi is stanton hill in sutton ashfield, there is a new dev there

allmannerofthingshallbewell · 22/02/2025 17:21

Stanton Hill is probably even worse than Sutton, it's officially a village of its own I think, but only has a couple thousand houses and probably about 4-5 shops. Awful place. In Sutton at least you have most amenities.

tootiredtospeak · 22/02/2025 17:24

I would go north east Derbyshire instead. Dronfield Eckington Coal Aston close to peaks semi rural and much nicer

PuppyMonkey · 22/02/2025 17:24

oggdog · 22/02/2025 11:03

we have basicly travelled all round somerset/devon and cornwall and would like one final move and it seemed a good idea to move up to the peaks area and start a new life up there for us all.

But Sutton isn’t in the Peak District. Confused

Ravenshead is very very nice. Some of the most expensive property in Nottinghamshire though.
Sutton is actually improving a bit. There is a lot more work in the area than there used to be.

LittleHangleton · 22/02/2025 17:29

None of the places you've mentioned is the peak district.

If you want rural, how about this one. Location literally in the middle of some woods, next to a reservoir

Just look at the MP for Ashfield ,30p Lee. Tells you all about the area and the kind of place that votes him in . I like Bolsover, good connections to M1 and on the door step to the peak district.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/02/2025 18:42

@oggdog it's my original home area OP and we live in Bath- so it's a bit of a difference

Any particular reason there apart from it's cheap ? - as personally I think it's not particularly nice - I do accept though you get a lot for your money

My own view is if going to that area at all I would go to Mansfield woodhouse- Mansfield itself is weird, the town itself has deteriorated massively from when I last lived there 35 years ago - ( I last went in October 2024 to see my son) but weirdly a lot of the outskirts are much better than when I lived there , a few chain type restaurants and gastro pubs etc and lots of practical stuff like B&Q etc - so I could accept it's ok to live - provided I never went into Mansfield!! ( only thing of interest to me is M&S)

Mansfield woodhouse has a really wide range of new housing of all sizes as does Foresttown. -and enough stuff on hand to get by day to day without going into Mansfield!!

I would personally avoid Sutton like the plague- any reason for you picking it ?same with bolsover -

Crikeyalmighty · 22/02/2025 18:45

Will just add I haven't been to bolsover for a long time- it may have improved - it did use to be a bit grim and I worked there at one point.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 22/02/2025 18:54

If you are moving looking for open spaces, bear in mind that in Somerset you also have the coast, whereas Nottingham/Derbyshire you are as far from the sea as you can be.

Yellowtulipsdancing · 22/02/2025 18:58

Have you looked at what health provision there is in these areas for your son? MH care can vary in each area, depending on what he needs. Does being near to a psychiatrist/hospital matter etc?

There is a hospital near Sutton…

AyeupDuck · 22/02/2025 18:59

Sutton and Mansfield are grim AF.

One thing you have to consider about the actual Peak District is stuff like times to get to a hospital and the fact that in winter bits are really treacherous to drive round. My mate worked in The Peaks, used to get on at junction 26 M1 if it snowed where I live it was ok but up there pretty bad weather wise.

Overall if it’s cheap there is a reason, nice bits of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire cost way more. My house is worth about 350k, in other parts it could be half that and then Duffield, you’re looking at least 500k. Both counties have some real pockets of deprivation don’t forget it’s ex mill and mining round many parts.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/02/2025 19:10

@AyeupDuck and as someone originally from that area- I love your user name!!

DuckBee · 22/02/2025 19:17

I think you need to think about what access to services you need. We lived equidistant between qmc and kings mill hospitals for example. Qmc were horrible to you but you were more likely to live - kings mill really lovely bedside manner sadly lacking in expertise for what we needed. Do you want access to train stations?

SparklingXmas · 22/02/2025 19:25

There are some nice areas in Mansfield. There is an outstanding rated hospital in Kings Mill which is a short drive away, plenty of parks and open spaces- Sherwood Forrest and Pines on the doorstep. Also has some nice National Trust properties nearby and has its own cinema. It depends on what you want- apols if I have missed this, but maybe have a look around the local areas.

CerealPosterHere · 22/02/2025 19:30

There are certainly some nice villages near the countryside areas of Sherwood and Clumber Park which would be good for the outdoors. Edwinstow is one which springs to mind as one of the bigger ones which looks like it might be ok. Even smaller, nicer ones I’ve driven through but can’t remember names.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/02/2025 19:32

Thing is I kind of agree with you about that - just think the town is truly awful - but then I'm kind of comparing it to when I lived there- still if I'm honest we have some bloody grim places even here in Somerset and far higher prices.

ednclouda · 22/02/2025 19:41

Berry hill part of Mansfield is lovely

bullrushes · 22/02/2025 19:42

Many of the ex mining villages have issues but not all. Sutton/mansfield are both benefiting from significant new job opportunities in the industrial estate areas just off the motorway eg the big Amazon depot, sports direct etc and so they are both improving. Kings Mill Hospital is also a big employer. Some of Mansfield (berry hill in particular) is nice. The countryside in north Notts is beautiful. Lots of heavily wooded areas. Ravenshead, Papplewick, Linby are all very nice. Newstead Abbey Park is where all the Nottinghamshire millionaires live

Crikeyalmighty · 22/02/2025 19:48

I think these would be a better bet- good for Peak District too - I've included one that isn't 'brand new' in Belper too - that's a pretty nice town !! 3 also in edwinstowe- very nice ex mining village but reasonably up market , right on edge of Sherwood Forest - again one isn't 'brand new' but really nice - I'm a snob and could happily live in edwinstowe although again Mansfield nearest town, !! But easy into Nottingham or Newark too if you drive

hi many thanks, you have put a house in Ripley, what is Ripley like

OP posts:
GJMJ · 22/02/2025 21:16

We live at Kirkby, it's not great but we travel to nursery at Ravenshead and secondary school at Hucknall. The countryside at Blidworth is beautiful so there is lovely places you can travel to even if your actual lsnt perfect.

CerealPosterHere · 22/02/2025 21:19

Ripley is nicer than Sutton or Mansfield. Belper is better but more expensive

Crikeyalmighty · 22/02/2025 21:23

@oggdog like the whole area it's a bit rough in my opinion , it is however pretty close to Belper ( 12 minutes or so) which is indeed very nice and very close to nice countryside. I think you would have to go and have a look at the whole area and see what you think - Belper is really nice and there are some lovely houses in your budget but can't see any new builds.
