the agents are coming this week.

do you know this area,Dunholme Way, East Street, Doe Lea, Chesterfield

Personally I think doe lea is horrible - it was always a weird back to back old terraced house area on a hill if I remember correctly - I can't see how it could suddenly be nice

Stegochops · 08/03/2025 20:22

I would definitely choose Brimington over Sutton or Doe Lea. There’s nothing at Doe Lea and it’s on a really busy road. Handy for the M1.

Stegochops · 08/03/2025 20:25

How about Tibshelf? That’s ok. You’d need a car though.

what about clay cross

I’d rather live in clay cross than Sutton or bolsover but I wouldn’t choose it necessarily. Some of the new estates are ok though. There are big supermarkets etc and quite close to the countryside e.g. Ashover

MsJinks · 09/03/2025 07:40

Clay Cross would be better than Sutton, Doe Lea, Bolsover and most areas you mentioned, apart from possibly Brimington - it has shops and new housing and is just 10 minutes from really nice countryside and 15ish from Matlock area if you know that part of Derbyshire. I'd stay on the edges of it on the Derby Road development rather than right in it on old factory rebuilds, and be careful that you don't end up in a different village exaggerating its closeness to t'cross.
Having said this I wouldn't choose it, and it is an ex mining village at heart so quite traditional and not so pretty itself. I think you're going to find any of these areas quite a shock from what's been said about where you are now, but you seem focussed on this area in general - I know there's cost but are there other factors that attract you? I would think a bit further north will have affordable areas? And maybe prettier.

many thanks, for your sound advice,i must admit Brimington looks a nd sound to be a good area, might have to concentrate on that area or nearby.

Brimington is ok - close to chesterfield and not far from countryside (not as close as t'cross) - there are better and worse parts of it but a newer build will not get into the worst of it I think Be careful not to edge out to Staveley is my opinion.
I just had a thought whether you've looked around Rother Valley area - the main green close by would be Rother Valley Country Park but that's pretty nice. Again there are nicer and rougher areas, I am not so up on that area but maybe someone on here can help?
And again a caveat I'm going on my own preferences in all my opinions and it depends totally on where you are comfortable living. Can you go up and look around? I went to one area once to look at a house (won't name it) and felt so awkward driving in with folk staring at the car (obvious outsider) that I just kept on driving out of there! New builds probably won't have this vibe I imagine but I think a good look around at various hours of the day would be helpful.

hi totaly agree, we plan on coming up in a couple weeks time and staying in a cottage for a few days and have a good look around, just sorting cottages out at the moment.
many years ago we were looking at houses and drove through nuneaton and must admit we have not stopped driving since,

OP posts:
Crikeyalmighty · 09/03/2025 15:28

@oggdog you know how you felt about Nuneaton- I think you will feel similar about many of the areas- personally I don't like my home town ( Mansfield) but it does have some quite nice areas and a couple of very nice areas- some of the places you mentioned in my opinion are not preferable to Mansfield. I think you need to have a good look around and see what you think

Crikeyalmighty · 09/03/2025 15:41

@oggdog do you def want a totally different area ?? as you could buy in westbury/warminster etc for same money

@oggdog honestly I think it's nicer than where you are looking - however I'm not you , so I do think it's best you visit the areas you are looking at- I actually by the way do like the Peak District- problem is I would want to live in Baslow , Bakewell , Tideswell, Crich etc if I lived up there -

Hi where abouts are you,we go to westbury, warminster and most of dorset and wiltshire quite a lot with our hobby so looking for new pastures start a new life and see out our days.

I'm not being funny but if you weren't that keen on Warminster/Westbury you should probably give pretty much every area you've mentioned in this thread a pretty wide berth. I lived just outside Chesterfield, which is nice in parts, for about 20 years, worked in Sheffield and now live in Wiltshire so have experience of most of the places mentioned on the thread
You seem very set on that area because you can get the type of house you want and keep coming back to Sutton-in-Ashfield etc when numerous people have said these are not favoured areas for various reasons. You obviously need to visit to see for yourself but be prepared to be disappointed.

its not that i dont like westbury area its that it is on our dorstep i we go there a lot and would like to move somewhere new. Regarding sutton it is just one of many places i have looked at, we are open minded as to where we go but we do have a budget to stick to so that controls mainly where we go, but at the moment its looking like it could be brimington, clay cross and possibly other areas near to Shefffield, we are going up there in 3 weeks just sorting out accomadation whilst we are there.
