@oggdog - forgot to add this

About this development
Surrounded by rolling countrysideGreat location to the north of the villageWithin easy walking distance of the shops, pubs and schoolsOffers an ideal base from which to enjoy the local community and the surrounding area

MoiraSuppose · 23/02/2025 16:54

Anywhere where you have to use junction 28 of the M1 is not a good idea. Sutton in Ashfield is awful. Pinxton is awful.

If you are moving somewhere based on price then you might as well go further north.

@MoiraSuppose nor me and I'm originally from that area- which is what I'm telling OP - there are nicer places - even if she doesn't want to go far ' up north'

Stegochops · 23/02/2025 17:28

Killingworth is also not very nice. I wouldn’t move there. Some good suggestions made. I’m not sure you’d get a 4 bed detached new build in Matlock etc for similar price though. I would pick chesterfield over the Mansfield area personally.

MoiraSuppose · 23/02/2025 18:21

Killingworth is also not very nice.

It's infinitely better than Sutton though.

elastamum · 23/02/2025 18:44

If you want Peak District borders Belper is nice and you can get a decent house for your budget.

CerealPosterHere · 23/02/2025 19:14

Buxton?

Dronfield or Chesterfield, Dronfield you can be in the Peak District in 10 minutes or 20 minutes to the motorway, but can be in Sheffield City Centre or Meadowhall in under 30 minutes. Dronfield has good schools, transport links, infrastructure but each part still has the village feel about it.

Icecreamandcoffee · 24/02/2025 13:10

I live somewhat near the area. I personally wouldn't want to live Mansfield/ Sutton way. One thing to really consider as many of PP have pointed out is the deprivation in the area. These areas are cheap for a reason.

A PP is correct in saying there is a lot of support for Reform UK, anti Palestine feeling and in my particular area there is a huge undercurrent of anti immigrant feeling (the other week a group of people were setting their vicious dogs (non exempted XL bullies/ pitbulls et al) on people who they deem to be "boat people" as they are in their words "all paedophiles who marry and perv on 14 year old girls". With a son with fragile MH I would be wary of moving to an area with such a undercurrent of sentiment.

Also services are stretched including the MH hospital. You say you care for your son, as someone who has friends working in the care/ pa industry I would say finding carers could be very difficult when the time comes.

I personally would veer toward the Derbyshire side.

Crikeyalmighty · 24/02/2025 13:25

@Icecreamandcoffee yep when I went back for first time in 25 years there was a distinct undercurrent of unpleasantness that I never felt was there before- I do think the fact the area was so focussed on coal mining has meant large amounts of late middle aged and elderly men have been effectively sidelined relatively early in life for many with not that many other decently paid full time options apart from a bit of warehousing or driving and many reluctant to totally retrain in their 50s etc- it just seems to be that they want to blame all this on immigrants- whereas these factors are not immigrant related at all. In fact I noticed suprisingly few non white people around - a few Eastern Europeans but even then not that many relative to the population. To me it seems a very aggressive area.

I certainly wouldn't pick it if retired and caring for a son with MH needs.

You'll make his mental health even worse if you drag him to Sutton, Mansfield or any of the other dumps mentioned.

is Sutton really that bad

Even if you have been all over the south west, I think it would be a very drastic move to a completely different part of the country where you have no roots and no network of friends. Somerset has some lovely parts to it. I think l would be more inclined to take holidays in some of these other places - obviously the Peak District, but also the Malverns in Worcestershire/Herefordshire. Try East Anglia, too. You won't get hills, but the skies are wider than anywhere else in the country. The North Norfolk coast is stunning. There are many, many other places where you will find beauty and wide spaces. Could you afford a camper van? Overall, this would be the cheapest way to travel in relative comfort.

Crikeyalmighty · 01/03/2025 12:24

@oggdog it really depends on your standards- I think it's shit- yes.

MoiraSuppose · 01/03/2025 12:42

If you had to move there for work, then you could make the best of it.

But to move there because you want a better life and open spaces is not a good idea. It's not that close to the Peak District and the parks in Sutton itself are not desirable places to go. Like @Crikeyalmighty says, it depends on your standards but I would walk my dog around that reservoir out of necessity but I wouldn't get any pleasure out of it.

I would recommend Belper. I love living here with my severely disabled teenager. People are friendly and sympathetic /helpful when my son has struggled in public rather than judgemental and I don't get the stares I get everywhere else. The town has lots of amenities such as a leisure centre, cinema, busy high street and within a ten minute drive you're heading out into the Peak District with all the open space and beautiful countryside. You would be able to get a lovely property for your budget with a decent sized garden.

AzureRobin · 01/03/2025 14:26

Avoid areas such as Sutton and Mansfield and the surrounding areas. It is built up, journeys take forever due to endless traffic lights every hundred yards, it's incredibly busy and whenever I've visited with my son, I've felt stared at and very unwelcome.

Arseynal · 01/03/2025 15:09

The nice areas are to the far west of the M1 broadly speaking. The Nottinghamshire side is not nice there is a lot of deprivation. The Asda in Sutton may be the worst shop in the world. As others have said, access to the peaks is not straightforward or easy. Your problem is anywhere lively with easy access to the peaks is not going to be a new build or £330000. There is an explosion of newbuilds all the way up the A61 in between alfreton and chesterfield which is probably preferable to Sutton but I wouldn’t be picking it out of anywhere in the whole country. I would probably go coastal - maybe towards Beverly or further north. Wildcard - Newcastle Great Park - tons of new houses, walking distance to nature reserve, easy public transport to city and coast and easy road access to Northumberland. Very good hospitals. I admit it’s a touch further….

MoiraSuppose · 01/03/2025 15:14

I once asked someone in there where the baby changing was and she said that it was hard to change a nappy in there because you can't see properly.

They only have blue lights to stop people being able to see their veins to inject drugs.

This - both places a 20 minute drive to Chatsworth, beautiful Baslow, Bakewell and Matlock
