When I picture a nearly £2m house - this isn't it

Just to rub salt in the wound even further - what does £1.7m get you in your neck of the woods?

So depressing seeing houses in decent areas that have been left to go to ruin by their elderly owners. Some move in and seemingly don’t spend any money keeping up their houses. Our budget was £1m when we bought last year and I was surprised by the number of large family homes we viewed that didn’t look too awful on Rightmove but were actually in a virtually unliveable state. Owners either didn’t have the money to keep up the house (why not downsize to something tidy and manageable?! Unless they’ve been remortgaging for the last couple of decades to fund an extravagant lifestyle they must have shitloads of equity) or they did (from all of the cruising pictures on the walls etc), it was obvious they were being mean instead. Either way, I’d rather live in a smaller house in a less prestigious area that was kept up nicely.

PickAChew · 15/11/2024 15:43

That's cheating. That's about £136k 😂

Samesame47 · 15/11/2024 15:43

I am in South Yorkshire, I have a 4 bed, 3 reception room detached 3000sq foot in a village with 4 acres of land and stabling for 4 horses, my house was recently valued at 750k. There isn’t even anything on the market near me worth that kind of money. Oh a the train to Kings Cross is 1hr 30 my husband still regularly commutes

Yeah I reckon this may be only 1.4million here in west London!

ThatTealViewer · 15/11/2024 15:47

That’s not actually London. Round here, £1.7m gets you a terraced house: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/87031806#/?channel=RES_BUY

Nice terraces, to be fair. But, a detached 6 bed house at that price seems completely reasonable to me!

I'm leaving London as quickly as is feasible because I can't buy a new house on my sole eage here (divorced etc) and rent is sky high. I'm going back home.

Price are increasing in my home county but you can get a fair bit of land for your pound note:

Some of these comments have me howling 😂

I'm a born and bred Enfieldtonian and largely agree that we're barely in London and houses are way overpriced. Alas, all our family and friends are here so we've decided to stay. We spent 600k on a 3 bed semi that needed a lot of work. It hurt. It really did.

We did move further into London for a short stint before purchasing our forever home, and it was a pain in the butt having to regularly get through London traffic to see family and friends.

Wish we'd grown up somewhere more affordable.

I will add that Winchmore Hill is a very desirable area and that house is very big. Still not what you'd expect for almost 2mil though!

Would like to add that the decor in this house is fudging hideous. Nice garden though.

HurdyGurdy19 · 15/11/2024 15:55

I would love to see that house when it's done up. It will be a beautiful family home (I hope. It would b
e such a shame if it was chopped up into flats or demolished and a housing estate crammed into the space).

For the same money, you could have a 5 bedroomed newbuild near me, with an acre of land.

Stealthmodemama · 15/11/2024 15:58

OP _ I think the house is over priced- nothing near has sold for that price (larger houses within 0.1 of a mile - that are bigger sold for less recently!)

But .. it has potential to be stunning!

FiveLoadsFourLiftsThreeMeals · 15/11/2024 15:58

It wouldn't even get you a detached house where I live - if you want something newly renovated and "turnkey ready" or whatever the term is it'd get you a generously proportioned three bedroom semi. I'm not even in a city - a nice town outside Munich.

AlexandraPeppernose · 15/11/2024 15:59

The only one at this price in the area. It is very ugly. It looks like someone has joined 3, 3 bed semis together to make it look like a secondary school in tge 1970sLink

HobnobsChoice · 15/11/2024 14:59

It is 6 bedrooms so bigger than a average. just in need of a lot of work!

For the same price you could have this in West Yorkshire

Wow that is a gorgeous money pit!

NewmummyJ · 15/11/2024 16:03

Winchmore Hill is lovely, some excellent primary schools nearby, and it's 30mins on the train to the city (where you would need to work to afford such a place). It's not exactly a normal family home, it's a 6 bedroom detached property, not exactly a starter home! Whether it will get near the asking price in that condition is another matter!

Imicola · 15/11/2024 15:09

Crikey, it's a reasonable sized house but needs a lot of work.

Here's one in Glasgow for just over £1.7

Love this , I would move in and slowly erase the grey but if is Offers Over then who knows !
Do they still price houses in Scotland to go 30% over the original?
