Inspired by million pound thread, I thought what if anything could you buy with 4 x the average full time salary (32,000) so 128K mortgage and a 10% deposit 13K = 141K call it 140 to allow for fees
90 minutes is considered the longest reasonable commute . So I thought what is the biggest accommodation you can get near you that is liveable ie no renovation just re-decorating the electrics and plumbing are safe not necessarily modern

Lovely one bedroom duplex with 2 bathrooms ,parking space ,small yard in a lovely market town ,with local shops ,brilliant cafes and restaurants within walking distance .Small Theatre with regular shows
Great schools and 6 miles from a town that regularly features as one of the best places to live in uk .
On reflection ,am wondering why we haven't sold it yet Smile

Two garages OR two one bed house boats, OR one of each, which would make more sense. Sleep on the boat. Park car/bike in garage.

Sirzy · 20/02/2024 20:49

The range of what you get really is amazing! I wonder if other countries have such a range in properly value?

Oblomov24 · 20/02/2024 20:49

A 1 bed flat above a corner shop in slough.

ZebraPensAreLife · 20/02/2024 20:50

@lenalemonade I now want to know where you live - sounds like exactly the kind of town I’ve been looking for! (But from the property prices possibly nowhere that’s practical for me)

cooroocoocoo · 20/02/2024 20:50

Darn, forgot, also 1 bed apartments.

Rocknrollstar · 20/02/2024 20:54

Probably a garage.

WhereIsMyLight · 20/02/2024 21:01

Within 20 miles of my house - static caravans that are going to fall into the sea, 1 bed flats, a couple one bed houses, a couple of 2 bed houses in an area you don’t want to live in.

However, I am already 40-70 minutes from the areas where you could earn £32K and where I live there are a couple of very small 1 bed flats. Most of the properties within 20 miles of me wouldn’t give you a £32K salary with a 90 minute commute.

Less than £140,000, detached, 2/3 beds and in a lovely location with a great beach https://www.stewartwatson.co.uk/properties/165-seatown/

Absolutely nothing!

WildBear · 20/02/2024 21:08

3 bed semi. Not in our town though, in a less desirable, rougher town 15 minutes away. Still better than renting though.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 20/02/2024 21:08

A grotty 1-bed flat in a not very nice area, or a couple of retirement flats.

PawsisShady · 20/02/2024 21:35

Just scrapes in as offers over
3 bed

Quite a few options around me.
This one is the biggest for the money.

This one looks a decent house and detached! Decor is needing an upgrade to put it politely but it seems liveable.

No idea about the area but seems far too remote for me and hence the price.

This was one is nicer inside and a lot closer to the city. Don't think it's a great area but certainly not the worst for Glasgow.

A garage!

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 20/02/2024 21:43

I live in Dublin so probably decent tent.

I suspect ground rent would be extra and lhe choice would be between a floodplain or
miles away from anywhere

Stamp duty, property tax, planning permission, a waste disposal and traffic management plan would also be required.

Thank you - I’ve actually been looking at a couple of towns not a million miles from there, so good to know there are nice places in that part of the country!

Toddlerteaplease · 20/02/2024 22:17

A Victorian terrace in a dodgy area, or a 2 bedroom apartment in a nice block in the city centre. I bought my house for £137 4 years ago. I reason is now worth about £200k.
