what could £140,000 buy you within 25 miles of where you live

Inspired by million pound thread, I thought what if anything could you buy with 4 x the average full time salary (32,000) so 128K mortgage and a 10% deposit 13K = 141K call it 140 to allow for fees
90 minutes is considered the longest reasonable commute . So I thought what is the biggest accommodation you can get near you that is liveable ie no renovation just re-decorating the electrics and plumbing are safe not necessarily modern

A parking space

DuchessOfSausage · 20/02/2024 19:08

1-bed or studio flat, retirement flat or a park home.

LauderSyme · 20/02/2024 19:09

Not a single house or bungalow. Lots of one bedroom flats and retirement flats, all leasehold. A few two bed park homes and a four berth boat!

@MandyMotherOfBrian

why would you have to change it from 25 miles to 20 miles??

@Cottagecheeseisnotcheese

in one direction park homes.
in the other studio/1bdrm flats.

id need a lot further to get a 3bdrm house.

central SE.

Not that poster but I also had to change it to as 25 isn’t an option on the rightmove app for me

1 bedroom flat nearby needing a lot of work. 2 bedroom terrace at a town 20 miles away grotty town though !

BaroqueInterlude · 20/02/2024 19:15

An abundance of semis and terraces. I'm rather taken by this cottage:

Also some detached houses - no idea about the area for this one but the house looks nice enough

If you need 4 bedrooms there is this semi - again, don't know the area:

Very very cute but tiny 2-bed cottages, and park homes.

Nothing...

Maybe a garage or a flat with a short lease that needs complete renovation.

South East, pretty seaside town.

6 bed terrace!

CherrySocks · 20/02/2024 19:17

One bed studio

RadicalSoftness · 20/02/2024 19:18

Quite a few nice 2 or 3 bed terraces, or semi-detached houses, mostly with some garden or parking, or both.
Gotta love the Midlands.

Not one but 2 garages! Actually DH and i could hide in one away from the kids....

Yep, also from Clapham so a garage (if you can find one) is the max

EdithWeston · 20/02/2024 19:22

2x retirement flats
1x shared ownership, new-build 2 bed semi on the outskirts
1x 1 bed flat v close to the rail tracks

ZebraPensAreLife · 20/02/2024 19:23

This is the pick of the properties when I looked up to 20 miles from where I work.

Which probably explains why I put up with a long commute!

Ground rent of over £7k a year on a new build house?? Can't really get my head round that being legal.

It’s not really ground rent as such. It’s rent on the 65% of the house you don’t own.

Crikeyalmighty · 20/02/2024 19:27

@PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister that's a cracking house for the money

SoEmbarrassed2024 · 20/02/2024 19:27

A studio apartment in a not great area

Ah! It was listed as ground rent but it's rent (as in shared ownership rent). Thank you- that makes more sense! I'd seen a news article about outrageous ground rent/service charges but that would've been ridiculous.

Susuwatariandkodama · 20/02/2024 19:31

Theres a variety that only consists of 1 bed flats, tiny 2 bedroom terraces or static caravans.

thesugarbumfairy · 20/02/2024 19:31

Mostly flats, either one or two bed. The odd 2-3 bed semi further afield.

2ndMrsdeWinter · 20/02/2024 19:31

A 2-3 bed house with front and back garden in an area you wouldn’t want to live at all.

Susuwatariandkodama · 20/02/2024 19:32

Oh and the areas are all pretty bad apart from the caravans, but then you can’t stay there all year round.
