What is your opinion? If your child attends a private school and you noticed their teacher had tattoos up arms etc….

Would It bother you? Non offensive tattoos.

This! 😂 No teen anywhere has looked at a teachers appearance and gone oh ‘Mr H looks cool. I want to look like him’.

Showing my age now too as I’m pretty sure the word ‘cool’ is no longer in use either.

WHAT!

Whats the new word for ‘cool’?!

Bitchcraft · 03/03/2026 19:52

The headteacher of my kid's primary had full arm and leg sleeves. He was very smartly dressed and respected. Always wore suits but when it was hot the arms came out and he totally rocked the look. He was ex military and quite strict and had that aura of authority. I wasn't sure about him at first but the tattoos made him more human to me. 😁 Turns out he was a normal person as well and had a sense of humour too.

Tbf this wasn't a private school but if my kids went to a private school and their teachers had tattoos I'd probably just try to have a cheeky look because I'm curious. And everyone has tattoos these days. I don't think people care that much anymore.

plsbekinddelicate · 03/03/2026 19:52

Unless it’s an English teacher with an incorrectly spelled tattoo I wouldn’t give it a second thought

TheBlueKoala · 03/03/2026 19:54

I hate tattoos. I'm sure it doesn't impact intelligence but I would question the intelligence of the person chosing to get one.

It was a reverse but interesting how it highlights people’s attitudes and how they’ve got no reason to back up their distain for tattoos

Edited

Absolutely agree 😀

Seadragonusgiganticusmaximus · 03/03/2026 19:54

Had exactly this at recent parent-teacher meetings. Not at all worried but i was slightly amused at the contrast between one teacher with lots (and I mean lots) of tattoos on his arms and legs and all the others who looked exactly as one would expect teachers at a public school to look. To be fair, the tattoos were only visible because he was in sports kit.

Talkingtomyhouseplants · 03/03/2026 19:50

I actually agree tbh. I know it doesn’t impact on their ability to do a job but it generally sends a message of sloppiness. I don’t think tattoos look good on anyone.

A message of "sloppiness? How?
Don't military people get tattoos? Hardly"sloppy" people.

It does bother me. I'm aware it's now an old fashioned view but I preferred it when teachers/doctors/nurses/police etc were expected to keep tattoos covered at work.

Am sure it doesn't impact their skill level but it does look scruffy 9/10 times. (I am being generous as I am not sure it ever looks good tbh).

Nothing to do with whether it is a private school though.

I feel the same. I think tattoos almost always look awful. They only look vaguely ok on the arms of big-muscled manual workers, imo.

So if the wearer is not carrying a hod full of bricks up a ladder; operating a mechanical digger or a concrete mixer; roping a steer; driving a big tractor; ploughing a field or digging up the road, then an armful of tattoos looks out of place and inappropriate!

I especially dislike the look of tattoos on petite, dainty women.

Ihaveneedofwaternear · 03/03/2026 19:09

What's gross about it?

She looked dirty to me, just how I felt! Her arms looked grubby!
You surely don’t want a nurse (or a doctor for that
matter) to look like that

TheBlueKoala · 03/03/2026 19:57

bubblenance · 03/03/2026 19:33

Interesting! My children attend private schools and I am a teacher moving to a private school…I have tattoos! Curious if I should cover them up or not but thinking about when it’s hot!

Well, you risk having judgmental people as myself judging you in silence at first. But then you would win everyone being a great inspiring teacher and we will maybe even come to think the tattoos suits you. 💓

dottiedodah · 03/03/2026 19:58

Currently undergoing Cancer treatment for the second time(sigh!) Radiographers .Nurses and one or two Doctors have a tat! I dont see the problem .Each to their own and they look cool and edgy

IdaGlossop · 03/03/2026 19:29

It's irony! The fact that you thought I was being serious, though, shows that there are people around who think like this.

I know! My trigger happy response kicked in b4 my brain!

There are a few people like this though, luckily I've only met one.

Hesma · 03/03/2026 19:58

Does it affect their teaching capability?

i thought not 🙄

ZyRidian · 03/03/2026 19:59

Clutch those pearls!!!
No it would absolutely not bother me in fact I'd be more judgemental of anyone it did bother.
They're so common these days. Gone are the days where if you have a visible tattoo your job options become more limited.

This has to be the most ridiculous post in a while and that is a huge claim.

Bringyourfoldingchair · 03/03/2026 20:00

Absolutely not.

I’ve no idea but I regularly get an eye roll and a ‘no one says that anymore’

maybe ‘slay’ that regularly gets spouted about in our house? 🤷‍♀️

They will meet professional standards of hygiene. You do know that skin with tattoos can still be scrubbed?

Skyflier · 03/03/2026 20:01

Dear god of course not. Two of my sons have tattoos - one is an audiologist and the other is a dentist. They are kind loving intelligent young men.

I'd want a nurse or doctor or teacher or anyone to be able to do their job and be respectful. I don't care what they look like. How was the care you received from that grubby nurse?

cherrymauve · 03/03/2026 20:02

Would not bother me at all. I’d assume any teacher etc who was employed in a private school had been assessed and trained to do their job.
My grandson had the most amazing teacher last year, tattoos, very funky half shaved hairdo, and she was AMAZING.
Don't judge books by their cover, its sooooooo small minded.

I hate tattoos. I'm sure it doesn't impact intelligence but I would question the intelligence of the person chosing to get one.

Question their intelligence... Because they like different things to you? It causes them no physical harm and has next to no risks if done by a professional, so you're questioning intelligence because they don't adhere to your idea of what's best? Do you question the intelligence of people who like different drinks/foods to you? I don't like gin, should I question the intelligence of those who do? Or just accept it's horses for courses and leave them be if they aren't directly impacting on my day?

And don't worry, those of us with tattoos won't need to question your intelligence since the levels are already so evident purely based on this statement

sonjadog · 03/03/2026 20:03

I think there may be a misunderstanding among some posters about what teachers being a role model for pupils actually refers to. It means they model good professional relations, study skills, diligence in work, knowledge, etc. It doesn't mean they model style-choices for their pupils. Did any pupil ever make personal style-choices based on what their Maths/History/Gym teacher's style??

They look like thugs - the other side effect of tattoos

JustSawJohnny · 03/03/2026 20:04

I don't get how having tattoos could affect a teacher's ability to teach effectively in any way.

You'd have to be a serious clutcher to give a shit about this.

Vivienne1000 · 03/03/2026 20:05

Crikey. This is shocking. I personally wouldn’t have tattoos, but having a teacher with them would not bother me at all. I bet the students don’t bat an eyelid and professionals in all jobs have tattoos these days. I am only concerned in their ability to teach and their kindness and integrity. Are you aware of everything your kids view on TikTok? You might be shocked….
