What is your opinion? If your child attends a private school and you noticed their teacher had tattoos up arms etc….

Would It bother you? Non offensive tattoos.

What a ridiculous post.

IWetMyPlants · 03/03/2026 20:06

Some of us are a blank canvas who like to be decorated with art. Doesn't mean we aren't the same as anyone else or lesser than regardless of profession.

YellowBirdSong · 03/03/2026 20:06

Wouldn’t care in the slightest !

MyThreeWords · 03/03/2026 20:08

I do feel a bit judgey about tattoos (unless they are extremely high-quality and artistic). I guess they just make me feel that the person is conformist and consumerist.

But the judgement would feel like a personal and private one. Not something that had any bearing on the person's professional competence, and certainly not something I would feel entitled to speak about with other parents, school staff, etc.

She looked dirty to me, just how I felt! Her arms looked grubby!
You surely don’t want a nurse (or a doctor for that
matter) to look like that

What if she’d had eczema? Or scars? Or vitiligo? Would that have seemed gross or dirty to you? It’s just skin. Catch yourself on.

It's noone's business. I really loathe tattoos.

I feel the same. I think tattoos almost always look awful. They only look vaguely ok on the arms of big-muscled manual workers, imo.

So if the wearer is not carrying a hod full of bricks up a ladder; operating a mechanical digger or a concrete mixer; roping a steer; driving a big tractor; ploughing a field or digging up the road, then an armful of tattoos looks out of place and inappropriate!

I especially dislike the look of tattoos on petite, dainty women.

Hmmm an interesting take.

If you go back 50 years then yes statistically the majority of people with tattoos were indeed men, often in very physical occupations such as miners or dock workers or sailors.

Today the majority of people with tattoos are women - of those with tattoos 68% are women and increasing vs 32% are men and static.

So something that was traditionally seen as a masculine preserve has over a relatively short period changed into a more feminine attribute.

All of which I find jolly interesting from a social change perspective but let's be honest has absolutely bugger all to do with someone's ability to teach or not!

Dilemma for me. I remember being taken aback at full sleeves on a police officer 20 years ago. It wasn’t allowed back in the day in my family member’s county (police officer). Equally, I remember thinking how daring the music teacher was for having a clef tattoo on her nape.

Some teachers in my school have discreet tats. Not sure how I’d feel if they had sleeves. I think (maybe cos I’m old?) that I’d disapprove. I don’t like tattoos, tho, so I’m likely prejudiced.

ChelseaBagger · 03/03/2026 20:10

I work at a very reputable independent school. Several of our teachers have tattoos and it's never been mentioned. Some have facial piercings, which I think looks more extreme personally, especially because you can easily take a piercing out during the day.

FWIW teachers at my kids' state primary have to keep tattoos covered at all times (including wearing long sleeves through the summer/during PE)

Johnogroats · 03/03/2026 20:11

No. A bit like it didn’t bother me in the slightest that there were gay teachers and one cross dresser. And that’s at a well known London school.

But surely you know they are tattoos and not dirt? So if she actually looked dirty (as in, had marks/stains on her skin) then you would be well within your rights to ask her to wash her hands. A tattoo, as you well know, doesn't come off, and it's presence does not preclude adequate hand/skin hygiene. You can't just decide to feel that someone is dirty/grubby, they either are or they aren't. Scruffy/unprofessional would be more of a matter of opinion (yours still would be irrelevant, but it would at least make more sense than trying to turn something absolute into a matter of opinion! )

I must have missed the part of the training that when we signed up to save lives we lost all rights to be a human being. Whispers we have sex for enjoyment, not just procreation, too... And some of us aren't even married 😱

Tattoos on a teacher - has nothing to do with thier ability to teach.
Judging a teacher because of the tattoos does demonstrate some 'interesting' attitudes and prejudice.
I'm just imagining what the op would do if they met my colleague who works in education with a head tattoo...

I'm old and I don't disapprove.
It's not age, it's attitude.

Twooclockrock · 03/03/2026 20:12

I have no tattoos as i could never decide on a design I liked enough to tattoo it onto me.
I do know lots of people with tattoos and they have jobs like Poject Manager, PR manager, Solicitor, and Head of IT, and just live your average kind of life.
Maybe if they had gang tattoos and a teardrop tattoo on their face or something offensive tattood on their knuckles I might be worried.
but no, a teacher with tattoos would not get me batting an eyelid.

themildmildwest · 03/03/2026 20:14

Does it affect how they do their job? Tattoos are so commonplace these days I don’t think the kids would even notice.
I am a HR director with full sleeve tattoos and it has absolutely zero impact on how I work, how much impact I can have etc.

MummyWillow1 · 03/03/2026 20:14

No, tattoos don’t affect teaching ability.

NewZebra · 03/03/2026 20:14

This has got to be a wind up, surely.

Parrlorwarrior · 03/03/2026 20:15

No it wouldn’t bother me.

AfternoonVanessa · 03/03/2026 20:17

My DD is a med student. She had her first tattoo on her 18th birthday. I dislike tattoos but it was none of my business. She stopped at three.

She has worked in schools and the primary aged kids loved them as one was Spider-Man.

I'm more angry about private schools insisting girls wear skirts when none of the teachers do!
Bloody archaic.

Ladyinamask · 03/03/2026 20:18

I wouldn't care less. As long as they are a good teacher I don't give a damn about appearances.
I say that as someone who doesn't like tattoos, I just don't like the look. But as long as I'm not expected to have one and as long as my child doesn't come home wanting one ( half joking, but only half) it's none of my business is it.
I don't know why being a private school teacher would differ from state though?

I'm equally angry at schools forcing girls to wear trousers because of leery men and boys.

Yes, it would bother me. Teachers are role models and I wouldn’t want my child permanently marking their body, so I wouldn’t want to see it on their teacher either.

Christ.

KimuraTan · 03/03/2026 20:21

Wouldn’t bother me at all. Some really uptight/snobby views on this thread. Hope they die out soon - what a backward kind of thinking.

Alpacajigsaw · 03/03/2026 20:21

I wouldn’t care less. Since when does having tattoos mean someone can’t do their job?
