What is your opinion? If your child attends a private school and you noticed their teacher had tattoos up arms etc….

Would It bother you? Non offensive tattoos.

Teaching isn't a "mental ability" but a fully embodied transmission.

Say what?

pottylolly · 06/03/2026 13:08

Yes it would bother me

thefamous5 · 06/03/2026 13:23

Im a qualified teacher, with 10 tattoos so far, and more in the pipeline - all on my ams and legs, so visible, and a nose ring.

I'm not currently teaching but I may well go back to it eventually. If a parent wants to judge my teaching skills and my ability to be a good role model and professional because of something I chose to get on my own body, that is up to them. I know that the schools in the area don't care at all because there are plenty of teachers with visible tatts and piercings.

Why are schools so uptight about the appearance of the pupils but not the teachers? Why must pupils have ott scrutiny paid to their shoes and trousers yet teachers can turn up covered in tats and piercings. Why the double standards?

I dont disagree that schools aren't over the top with uniform, but we are also adults. Theres many things adults do that children can't. Plus, we can't exactly remove tattoos.

I worked in primary schools which are a lot more relaxed anyway.

It’s not the 1950’s op.

For the billionth time, OP IS THE TEACHER WITH TATTOOS. It's 1950s btw, no apostrophe needed.

Less than ten years ago, some heads were trying to do exactly that. No member of staff on less than £900 a month was exempt - they were also told that they had to buy suits for each day of the week 'They're only about a couple of hundred pounds in Marks, you can do that and then get some nice courts at the same time'. Then there were the 'your footwear...yes, we know you're a bit limited because of the leg brace/boot you have to wear, but would it really be that hard to wear a nice heel on the other foot?' conversations.

It finally stopped at that one when the business manager was told to get her hair relaxed so it would look 'a bit neater and more professional'.

I love that you think tattoos are a sign of endless frivolity 😂

it's the exposure of the tattoos in a formal working role (teacher, police force, etc.) that is frivolous. i have 33 of the blasted things (albeit haven't added any in 15 years or more, but i wouldn't rule it out). 🕊️

Of course there are many things adults can do that dc can't. I'm not asking why kids can't have a fag if sir does, or why they can't go to thr pub as sir does but this thing with image and appearance is absolutely comparable, either it matters or it doesn't.

So if kids have to wear the exact correct trousers or skirts then teachers should also adhere to some kind of dress code and cover their tats up.

Life’s too short to be so formal in my opinion. I think kids prefer it when they realise their teacher is a human being and not some robot that gets wheeled out of the cupboard every morning.
Life needs more frivolity 😁

I can't even imagine why it would be an issue

Pippatpip · 07/03/2026 18:12

Given that there is a massive recruitment crisis in teaching (can’t think why…) and finding good quality staff is bloody hard then adding no tatts to the criteria is just daft and discriminatory. I do agree that certain tattoos are offensive on anyone irrespective of profession. We have had two members of staff who are heavily tattooed. One has tons of piercings. Both male, both suited and booted, both excellent at their jobs. One had worked in a very high profile job in the city. Personally, I’m not a tattoo lover but each to their own and it does not reflect on ability to teach. Fortunately, most private school parents are quite normal and sensible. However, there are always exceptions including the ones who seem surprised and very annoyed that I don’t come to the house the parent /teach their child.

LBFseBrom · 08/03/2026 01:54

I would be very surprised, tattoos are very chavvy imo.

'No tats' is maybe unreasonable as so many have them, just keep them covered.

Schools promote dress codes, this should be included

Lots of schools seem to think it's their duty to prepare young people for a life of chavdom.

CompanyOfThieves · 08/03/2026 09:41

You don't need teaching qualifications to teach in a private school. I'd be more bothered by that.

Great subject knowledge trumps teaching qualifications if you have to choose between the two at a private school where discipline is easy and class sizes are manageable. Teaching qualifications are absolutely no guarantee of great subject knowledge anywhere.

You do in a good private school, one with a fine academic record, They list their teachers' qualifications on their website, the parents expect that.

Gossipisgood · 10/03/2026 10:59

Why would it bother you? Having inked skin doesn't mean you're any less capable of Teaching than those without tattoos. Do you think it makes someone look rough coz they have tattoos?

The op has tats, she's asking what others would think.

My eldest daughter’s primary school teacher is a children’s novelist. Not famous but she makes a living and has connections so the kids get to meet famous children’s novelists & even got a few of her students’ work published in various anthologies. Her teaching assistant is an ex-Google coder who is teaching the kids how to develop in Python.

My youngest daughter’s primary school teacher is a qualified child psychologist. She’s helped several children get diagnosed for SEN & truly understands how to teach. Her teaching assistant used to be a senior maths teacher in Japan.

My son’s private nursery is run by someone who set up 3 businesses before she was 16, and is a self-made millionaire. She has the kids all ‘starting their own businesses’ by the preschool room to make real money that they get to keep — her main concepts is ‘failing quickly’ and ‘resilience’.

I pay a lot of money for people like this to be around my kids because I feel skills like there’s are more valuable than a 2:2 / 3rd class degree from a career teacher.

maturemummy · 11/03/2026 22:34

My son tells me that some of his teachers do have tattoos, can’t say that I’ve ever noticed myself.
