What is your opinion? If your child attends a private school and you noticed their teacher had tattoos up arms etc….

Would It bother you? Non offensive tattoos.

@Ihaveneedofwaternear

In all honesty, yes. I realise most people will have a different view but, in truth, I wouldn’t like it.

Yes, it would bother me. Teachers are role models and I wouldn’t want my child permanently marking their body, so I wouldn’t want to see it on their teacher either.

Well, your child will be 18 and whether they ‘mark their body’ or not will have absolutely nothing to do with you! Do you think they tattoo ink will shrink their brains?

Pricelessadvice · 03/03/2026 18:46

I taught at a private school with tattoos.
I must be jailed immediately! 😂

Where is the logic in applying the standards you have for your own child to their teacher? It begs so many other questions: the teacher shouldn't eat meat or wear leather because your family is vegan? shouldn't wear synthetic fibres next to their skin because they make you sweat more? shouldn't worship God because you are bringing your children up as atheists?

Luckily for you, our prisons are full.😁

Interesting post; I hope it’s a joke Grin I teach the children of the masses - including one of my own children - in a state school. Each year, we teach Oxbridge entrants, alongside children who might be better suited to a trade, and all shades in-between. I myself have a degree from Oxford, and a Masters. I always secretly thought some private school parents thought this about the children I teach (yes, you’re talking about children) but wasn’t expecting to see it expressed so blatantly on here.

VanCleefArpels · 03/03/2026 18:50

It seems to me that the majority of people under 40 now have tattoos of varying types so it’s inevitable us old pearl clutchers are going to come across people with tattoos in all
sorts of professional and other settings. Sign of the times.

Would not bother me personally. I reckon about a third of my professional work colleagues have tattoos although they are for the most part not on show. Its not such a big deal these days unless it is some spiders web tattoo on their face or some football hooligan emblem. If they are an otherwise great teacher I could not care less.

StarlightRobot · 03/03/2026 18:55

@IdaGlossop

That is an interesting question. I wouldn’t have a view about a teacher’s religion or diet which I think are private matters anyway. I suppose visible tattoos are different as something on display. The question was whether it would bother me but I certainly would keep that opinion to myself. I know tattoos are completely ubiquitous these days.

It is a joke but I know there are people who shockingly, think like this. I am entirely state educated, in the north, very little regional accent, and had quite a job of it when I arrived at UCL 40+ years ago peruading my southern contemporaries that I wasn't privately educated. My DD is also state educated except for sixth form, and went to Oxford. I have always supported the right of people to choose how they spend their money, despite my unease about the privilege a private education can confer, but am disillusioned that attitudes that shocked me in the '70s and '80s still persist.

Typo

I was, but it's telling that some people think I was bring serious ie we live cheek by jowl with people who do have this attitude.

BrentfordForever · 03/03/2026 19:00

So, do you suggest there’s a striptease at the interview to check?!

FakeTwix · 03/03/2026 19:01

TwilightSkies · 03/03/2026 18:38

No. It doesn’t affect ANYTHING. And I don’t think they look ‘scruffy’ 🙄

Dirty, crumpled clothes look scruffy. Unbrushed hair is scruffy.

But they can look scruffy.

If they were neat, tidy and went well with the cut and style of clothing then they don't.

But often the clothes cut half the design off. Or the design is a bit fuzzy and indistinct.

Or they're wonky and don't go well together (done at different times in different colours/styles etc).

Very occasionally it all works and you don't really notice or can appreciate the look.

But often they look a bit meh.

I don't think it in any way impacts anyone's ability to do their jobs etc. Just looks a bit rubbish.

You revolting bigot. I doubt you’d want me to look after you, with my tattooes, piercings and unnatural hair colour. But then I’m guessing you’d only go to a naice private hospital where the staff only look a certain way, because apparently that’s more important to you than how good someone is at their job.

here’s a picture of two sets of people, one set has tattooes, the other doesn’t. Which ones are deviants and criminals?

Think you need to read the tone.....it's quite clearly a joke.

Your readiness to scream bigot is a bit weird from a HCP though....

TheCurious0range · 03/03/2026 19:06

I don't like tattoos generally, mainly because almost all of them look shit, especially the trend of getting tattoos that just look like your pals have drawn all over you. I also think they look worse as they fade and stretch/move over time. Makes no difference to me what the person's profession is though.
