3+ 4+ 5+ 7+ support thread 2016

In previous years I have started these threads to help and support all those parents involved in the independent school admissions process.

I wasn't going to start one this year as I know I would not be able to check back on it as regularly as I would like, which then defeats the purpose of the thread.

However, after numerous positive PM's about the threads I think it would be a shame not to start one where at least the hand holding can continue. Flowers

There are many many people who have been through the process and 'live to tell the tale' . There are also other tutors I know who read this thread and it would be great if you all could help and support and share your ideas.

NLCS emails out - we got a no sob

dollyphillips · 02/02/2016 09:08

Dip123 - that's what the Admissions Policy states. They draw up a list of 10 girls only apparently.

cuttey · 02/02/2016 09:51

Got the yes email from nlcs!

dollyphillips · 02/02/2016 10:17

Congrats Cuttey - v well done!

Dip123 · 02/02/2016 10:52

Thanks dollyphillips had another read of the admissions policy- I must have skipped that bit!

cuttey · 02/02/2016 11:21

Also yes from Habs! Waiting list from Channing though...

namechanged16 · 02/02/2016 11:22

Well done cuttey! Congratulations! No more sleepless nights for you..

namechanged16 · 02/02/2016 11:23

Did you get email or letter from Habs and Channing?

cuttey · 02/02/2016 11:24

Thank you namechanged16. We got letters from the postman.

meonlyme · 02/02/2016 11:25

Just heard from all schools. Decision time now. So confused :( Ken prep vs glendower vs NLCS vs HABS
Am I stupid for leaning towards Ken prep.
Anyone have strong views in doing a prep school vs all the way to 18?

namechanged16 · 02/02/2016 11:26

Ahh... Not at home right now. Can't wait to get back. Now decision time for you. What a lovely problem to have!!

Lolakath19 · 02/02/2016 11:36

Hi Meonlyme, congrats !! you are in a lovely position. I think we will go for Ken Prep as well, would be funny if our girls were together next year!

Haggismcbaggis · 02/02/2016 11:36

Meonlyme - I think you'd be insane not to go to a through school rather than go through this again at 11 (except it's a million times worse). Your DD can of course change schools if she wants to. A lot get a change of scene for 6th form.

My DD really enjoyed end of year 5/ year 6 at her through school. Her peers and their parents all doing tutoring and test papers were so stressed

Smilingmum2009 · 02/02/2016 12:35

I agree with Haggismcbaggis.

These are all excellent schools and if geography isn't an issue (which it doesn't seem to be - presumably you would move as a result of your decision - how else would the N London schools and RBKC / Fulham schools be in contention?) why wouldn't you choose a first-rate school like NLCS that goes through to 18???

You can also make a decision to leave at a later point but it would give you SO much more peace of mind.

meonlyme · 02/02/2016 13:11

Thanks Lolkath19 that would be so weird- happy weird :)
Thank you for your opinions smilingmum and haggismcbaggis, helps out things in perspective. May I ask does anyone have a view on NLCS vs HABS. it's just that HABS felt more nurturing and more diverse than NLCS which is quite a hothouse I hear. Is NLCS way better by reputation/academics etc?

Haggismcbaggis · 02/02/2016 13:18

I'd say your impression of NLCS and Habs are correct. Both amazing schools Obvs. What is your daughter like? If she's very self- confident, self-motivated and doesn't get overwhelmed by lots of work then NLCS. If she's a little more sensitive, quieter than Habs may suit better.

Lastmindotcom · 02/02/2016 13:22

Meonlyme. I am a parent at one of theses schools. Pls PM if you would like to discuss choices.

Hyagreeva · 02/02/2016 13:55

Hi same position NLCS vs. Habs. I have sent a PM, grateful for any views.

Frogusha · 02/02/2016 13:55

We got only Channing. Which wans't first choice. Would like to try NLCS again at 7+ and 11+ (and SHHS, was too late to apply this time) and tutor this time. Channing doesn't seem to be the best option if we were considering to move as they won't prepare at all for exams. Also languages don't seem to be their strong point (something I'm keen on) and even sports seem to be not amazing. I hear they do swimming once a term. Any views on whether to accept Channing if we were not stay all the way?

horsemadmom · 02/02/2016 14:02

Happy to answer NLCS questions.
I'll start with
No, it isn't a hothouse.
PM me anything.

Lastmindotcom · 02/02/2016 14:03

Frogusha there are v few places at 7plus at most girls indies. Competition fierce and odds are tough.

mumteacher · 02/02/2016 14:24

Congratulations to all those holding offers to school of their choice.

If it didn't work out please try and think of it in terms of the timing not being right for your child rather than a failing. X

Whereas Nlcs isn't a 'hot house' it most definitely is fast pace for sure.

I absolutely know girls who, in yr 1 were encouraged to consider other schooling options prior to the 7+ entry.

Please consider what a school like Nlcs will do to your child's self esteem if you feel she isn't ready for such an environment.

The school have carried out about 20 odd activities over 2 hrs across the two rounds of interviews, there is no way they know your child better than you X
