Help! I hid my daughter's switch and now I'm in trouble!

So the story goes like this:
My pre-teen daughter was being naughty, didn't do as she was told (nicely), chatted back in a super-cheeky way, rolled her eyes, lied and then didn't do as she was told again. So I got very cross and took her Switch... And hid it somewhere in the house, told her she will get it back when her behaviour improves.
Fast forward a few weeks... I cannot find the bloody thing... I took apart the whole house... left no thing unturned. It's just gone. It's so strange. I usually remember where I put things. This time, it's like I have a black hole, it's like someone erased the memory of me hiding it. It's like I have an amnesia to this specific moment in time when I was hiding it. I know I hid it but I don't know where.
Since it was also my husband's Switch I am now having to buy him a new one... If I can't find it (deadline set to a week).

Any ideas of how to retrieve this memory please? Any strategies for finding lost subjects? I don't want to buy a new one, it's expensive! Sad

Over the moon that OP found the Switch and amazed at the accuracy of @Phepho. Deffo agree with the AMA thread suggestion, what a fantastic and unusual gift you have.

Yogalola · 28/10/2021 18:04

Could your daughter have found if, and hidden ii? Otherwise if you were emptying bins that day, could you of accidentally put it in the dustbin? Check airing cupboard

Vynalbob · 28/10/2021 18:05

wifi router activity is a great suggestion.... rules out OH or dd getting it.
If it were me I'd hide it low in a room your daughter is unlikely to go.... slip under a wardrobe or bed... most furniture has a neat switch sized space underneath.
Only other suggestion is when your alone in the house act through what you did in the events before hand concentrate on every detail except the switch.....I usually have a eureka moment the minute I forget and think of something unrelated

Good luck

It's been found, OP has updated :)

Now, if @Phepho is around, maybe they know where I have put two yellow dresses ready to return to SHEIN, and what happened to my gold cross yesterday? I was convinced that the 4 dresses of DD3 were together in their bags on the bookcase in my room, so when DD2 sorted out what she was keeping yesterday I went to get them and there were only 2. DD won't have taken them back off the pile, they were ones that she didn't like.

As for the gold cross, I wear it every day and always put it on the bedside table or chest of drawers in our room. No idea there!

I swear we have a poltergeist here - still not found DD2's handmade Christmas stocking despite having gutted her room to redecorate, and checking every loft box last Christmas :(

CoffeeWithCheese · 28/10/2021 18:11

Actually can I just chain @Phepho to DD2 who can literally lose ANYTHING (she's managed to lose her shoes, in school, wearing them on a couple of occasions). That would test all gifts and powers to the limits!

Sneezecakesmama · 28/10/2021 18:17

I suspect she found it and isn't telling you

1ittlegreen · 28/10/2021 18:18

I hid ours under a stack of tea towels in a draw.....

LoisLane66 · 28/10/2021 18:19
  1. Hidden under a carpet or rug where it won't be trodden on.
  2. Behind sacks of pet food in utility room.
  3. On top of kitchen wall units where it can't be seen
  4. In an empty presentation box which another item came in
  5. Behind books on bookshelf
  6. Between laundry in airing cupboard
  7. In one of your unused handbags in wardrobe
  8. Inside one of a pair of boots you don't wear much
  9. In an empty biscuit tin or bread maker
  10. Between the mattress and base/slats at the bottom of her bed Out of ideas now but what I do when I leave spare keys or hide stuff if going away for a few days is to take a photo of the item IN the hiding place. It will be timed and dated on your mobile so no trouble to find it.

  1. In a pocket of a coat/jacket you don't wear much.
Bleachmycloths · 28/10/2021 18:21

Has your daughter been a little devil, found it and hidden it from you??

BigFatLiar · 28/10/2021 18:24

It wouldn't be Mumsnet if people actually read the thread.

But it is Mumsnet and people don't read the thread which is why they keep on going (like the everready rabbit).

Unsure33 · 28/10/2021 18:25

@Phepho

Amazing

Unsure33 · 28/10/2021 18:27

@phepho can you tell what happened to things even if they are not in the house ?

IrishCharm · 28/10/2021 18:30

Tucked between books in a book case? Under a drawer/dresser/top of kitchen cupboards/under sofa
Once I’ve done a circuit of each room I have to stop, take a break then go back and just sit and think about places I haven’t looked yet x
—not thinking, I haven’t read the full thread so you’ve probably found it 😂😂

LoisLane66 · 28/10/2021 18:34

Funny how so many of us suggested the same places such as unused bags, coat pockets, behind books, top of cupboards etc...

cannockcandy · 28/10/2021 18:35

Another vote here for your daughter having found it.
If it really is hidden then I would methodically go through every single room in the house. Each room top to bottom, especially book cases, under/inside cushions, sofas bed ect. And high up spaces.
I'd also search the Ds room too.

hankyspanky · 28/10/2021 18:36

@Phepho can you help me find my passports?? I'm at my wits end, I've searched my house from top to bottom over the course of several weeks to no avail. I've got them in a pink leather case so they're quite bulky and will by no means easy to replace them all!!!

winnieanddaisy · 28/10/2021 18:38

Ask St Anthony to help . He's really good at finding things

Especially when you've already found it.
Rachand23 · 28/10/2021 18:45

Try shopping bags and old coat pockets

badg3r · 28/10/2021 18:46

Oh I'm glad you found it! Reminds me of the time I lost my passport for a week or so, it was in the scanner!

Feeasco · 28/10/2021 18:46

Happens to me all the time.
Sad that we have to hide things and not trust kids to just leave it.
Go through each room leaving nothing unturned - containers too. Sometimes I put things in unused bags. Or under the mattress? If your daughter found it (or husband🤐) check their places. Like car, garage. I think the ultimatum is unfair and consider that it will set a precedent. Each time you misplace something.
Good luck x

NewlyGranny · 28/10/2021 18:49

We actually claimed on insurance for a nice camera back in the day, thinking it had been stolen from the pushchair at a steam fair. Found it half a year later dangling from a coat hook under DH's Barbour... Unwitting fraud. 😳

Feeasco · 28/10/2021 18:51

I see found. In fairness 11 pages of reading hiding places not so interesting. Glad its found 😂
