Prepping for Pandemic... 14

FuckThisWind · 12/03/2020 18:55

OK folks, we have been prepping for a Pandemic for 13 threads now. And a Pandemic we now have.

I think we all know this has gone beyond prepping now. And most of us agree that the UK Government has not really stepped up to the mark. We have had shared advice here from our Italian residents and those in other countries who have taken much more stringent measures.

So this thread continues to be about us being prepared. But it is more than that. It is about support, sharing of information and advice. It is now a community. A community who acknowledged a long time ago that this was always 'Not Just The Flu'

I thank you one and all for being here. We have tough times ahead. But we are all still here. Please share, rant, whatever. The great thing about these threads is that they have always been supportive and non judgemental. I like to think it's a safe space for all of us who are concerned. And trying to do our best. For ourselves. For our loved ones. And for our community and beyond.

I must have enough food for a month now.

Just wish I could shut the door and not come out but I have to go to work.

Orangecake123 · 13/03/2020 21:29

My brother's medical school have all stopped teaching and placements for their student's. UCL and king's have done similar.

Reastie · 13/03/2020 21:30

Where are you keeping it all?!

Legoandloldolls · 13/03/2020 21:34

4Ah let the socail morally superior get on with it on SM.

It's just another form of virtual signalling.

Look at me, I'm such a perfect person

While someone has set up a community Covid support group to actually DO something.

I have thought of my kids, been a responsible parent, bought end Fed beginning of Jan when I ate my Brexit stash. I'm not stockpiling and haven't so its washing over my head.

There are loo rolls in the shops. People can eat more than just pasta

Legoandloldolls · 13/03/2020 21:36

If my kids dont stumble on my prep, I could go a month on rice, coconut milk and curry.

If they find it, it's down to Darwin theory and only the strongest will eat ( ie me as I hid most of the chocolate)

oxygen concentrator for asthma

Honestly, I think the problem with this is that if you get to the point you need oxygen, you really need other attention (and tests). Oxygen alone won't save you if your carbon dioxide is building up. And it won't solve the problem that's causing you to need oxygen.

If it's a stop-gap while you wait for the ambulance, sure. But I wouldn't buy one with the intention of sitting at home with it (apologies if you weren't anyway). I'm afraid of people trying to treat themselves at home, but at the same time I completely understand the worry. Sad

lachy · 13/03/2020 21:37

@Reastie,

Some of ours is kept in the garage, some in the cupboard under the stairs and some in the loft.

(and at the minute there is some in the boot of the car!)

Orangecake123 · 13/03/2020 21:38

(I'm British but study in Prague)

We currently have around 144 cases. Looking at Italy's figures we're around 18 days behind.

I'm still going to the supermarket early in the morning wearing gloves. I have around enough food for 3-4 weeks and water for a month. But just trying to figure out when I shop just stop and stay indoors.

What the CZ has done so far:

-we will close shopping centers within 10 days.
-prison visits are suspended.

  • deliberately spreading the virus is a criminal offence.
  • libraries + gyms are closed from today
  • events more than 30 cancelled.
  • zero interest loans for small shops available.
  • schools already closed
  • travel ban from 15 countries already set

You can also test yourself for the test if not recommend by a doctor if you're willing to pay for it yourself. (have 18 labs).

A quick question (sorry to be thick- I don’t know much about house plants that grow in the U.K.) can dandelion root tea actually be made from the roots of dandelions that I see in the garden?

Orangecake123 · 13/03/2020 21:39
  • when I just stop and stay indoors.
WrapTrap · 13/03/2020 21:42

@Reastie I have a general stock in the kitchen of food and cleaning products, extra cleaning stuff in utility and then crates in the garage of tins. I'm lucky we have two fridge freezers and two garage freezers

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 13/03/2020 21:45

I'm wondering how @BanKittenHeels is doing at work. I haven't managed to keep up so sorry of I've missed you. You must be knackered already.

tryingtoprep · 13/03/2020 21:51

Haven't caught up yet. I took a break from the news earlier. Few hours of blissful pretence it wasn't happening.

In all seriousness I think there should be a temporary relaxation on the rules for prescribing sedatives and sleeping pills. Almost impossible to get now but they could save lives. Stress lowers the immune system and we're all so stressed. I'm trying natural remedies but still so stressed and knowing I shouldn't be stressed is making me even more stressed!

It's worse being in the UK. Standing by helplessly as the rest of the world takes measures to protect their populations. Despite an underlying condition I'm generally healthy and it feels all for nothing now. I'm so worried for my elderly relatives too. I wonder if I'll ever see them again. I don't want to risk visiting. I'm glad of video calls.

How are people cleaning their carpets? I've been spraying Dettol. DP thinks I'm being ridiculously over the top. We're a shoes off at home household and he thinks that's enough.

Orangecake123 · 13/03/2020 21:51

@colouringinpro

Need to try and get my parents to stock up on more food, esp as my email is gf

I knew nothing would be done if I left it to my father and I had my mother and younger sister's to think about- so I just paid for deliveries to their address.

My mother thanked me two days ago for everything I sent in october, most of which they still have so I don't have that extra worry about them and to date the only thing my dad has stocked up on has just been creme eggs.

VivaLeBeaver · 13/03/2020 21:53

I’m keeping mine under my bed. Have a lift up king size frame which is half empty so it’s in there. Dh has no idea as he thinks I’ve lost my mind. Always had a utility room full of stuff but am adding more than usual now.

colouringinpro · 13/03/2020 21:55

orangecake yes I was going to pop over this weekend with the dcs and get df set up with Sainsbury's online. But my dm is very very frail and I'm not sure I should risk it. I work in a big school, dcs public transport to their big comp. So hard.

ClientQueen · 13/03/2020 21:57

Just checked what I have in case work gets closed - I'm immunocompromised
All my meds for a month, and injections for 10 weeks, paracetamol, antihistamines, various painkillers, Imodium
Soap, dettol spray, all my cleaning stuff and washing powder
Food - most importantly teabags and long life milk!!!! Grin freezer, and cupboards are full. Enough for 2-4 weeks depending on how weird I want the meals to get
Cat litter
Need to get some cat food
loo roll and food coming Sunday

Anything I've missed? It's just me and the cat Smile
I'm not generally a prepper as such, I just don't let things run low if that makes sense

tryingtoprep · 13/03/2020 21:58

Wow @Orangecake123 That's impressive. Strong protective action. I wish I lived there.

@Sprayitall Yes you can. I've made dandelion tea from the garden in the past (no garden in our current home). I love making my own teas.

MrsWhites · 13/03/2020 22:03

I’m keep some of mine in the cupboard under the stairs.

Does anyone else feel very restless and on edge, I just hate the feeling of being in limbo 😢

Readyme · 13/03/2020 22:07

@tryingtoprep I agree with your DP there is no need of you are shoes off house.

Mum2jenny · 13/03/2020 22:08

Shit, just remembered I need to get mice for the snake! Hope this won’t be a problem! She’s not really eating this early, but will be wanting feeding soon. I’ve only got around 2 feeds in the freezer.

MoonlightMistletoe · 13/03/2020 22:10

Sprayitall · 13/03/2020 22:10

@tryingtoprep thank you. Massage some pure castor oil around eyes and apply some on your eye lids before sleep (not too little or too much, just enough so it doesn’t trickle down) It might help or if it didn’t you will have lovely looking cool eyes in the morning (it calms the internal heat and stress)

tryingtoprep · 13/03/2020 22:10

Thanks @Readyme I knew I was a bit silly. I've become ever so slightly obsessed with spraying everything.

wherearemychickens · 13/03/2020 22:11

I'm new to Ocado and have just set up a weekly order for the next three weeks, covering a couple of basics for me (greek yoghurt!) but also a whole load of stuff to donate to a food bank every week - including soap, moisturiser, san pro, a 4 pack of toilet roll. What I was disappointed about was that I couldn't just click 'donate to a foodbank' in my trolley, so have emailed them to suggest that. If visits to supermarkets are going to drop off, wouldn't that be a great way of making sure donations were made? They could be reserved in the warehouse, or some kind of delivery operation arranged with the foodbank?
