Prepping for Pandemic... 14

OK folks, we have been prepping for a Pandemic for 13 threads now. And a Pandemic we now have.

I think we all know this has gone beyond prepping now. And most of us agree that the UK Government has not really stepped up to the mark. We have had shared advice here from our Italian residents and those in other countries who have taken much more stringent measures.

So this thread continues to be about us being prepared. But it is more than that. It is about support, sharing of information and advice. It is now a community. A community who acknowledged a long time ago that this was always 'Not Just The Flu'

I thank you one and all for being here. We have tough times ahead. But we are all still here. Please share, rant, whatever. The great thing about these threads is that they have always been supportive and non judgemental. I like to think it's a safe space for all of us who are concerned. And trying to do our best. For ourselves. For our loved ones. And for our community and beyond.

@rhubarbtea I am low carb! I’ve got 2 weeks easy food for if I get the virus which is not low carb - porridge, soup, ready meals. But while I’m healthy I stick to low carb and I have all the protein etc in fridge and freezer.

I’ve plenty of washing powder, fabric conditioner, dish washer tablets as I always buy in bulk. Loads of tea and coffee. I’ve got fresh milk plus long life.

My plan is - I will keep my 2 weeks “virus” food in a plastic box in the shed and I will continue to eat what’s in my cupboards and freezer and have weekly food deliveries while I am well. But I shoyld be able to avoid supermarkets for a while now

PatriciaBateman · 13/03/2020 20:49

How does long life milk taste compared with normal full fat milk?

My kids have sensory issues too, and won't accept UHT or evaporated milk unfortunately. Sad

I have had some success with the Nido powdered milk though, or flavouring the less palatable milk with chocolate/banana powder.

Sprayitall · 13/03/2020 20:50

@PatriciaBateman thank you

wheresmymojo · 13/03/2020 20:50

@PancakeFiend

I think I would put a new post on chat or general health about that to get more answers from medics x

TemoraryUsername · 13/03/2020 20:51

People are starting to be horrible. On SM I see so many bitchy posts about panic buying

I keep on looking at those posts and thinking they must be a decoy, put people off the fact that they have a stockpile type of thing. These are people who are otherwise taking the virus seriously, and they haven't bought a few extra tins of beans and loo roll, really?!

Nofoolfornoone · 13/03/2020 20:52

@PancakeFiend do you know how to feels pulse manually? Feel it and see if it feels regularly

PatriciaBateman · 13/03/2020 20:54

Oximeters do fluctuate very, very easily... any movement, yawning, a cold finger will do it. Please don't let fluctuations upset you (this is one reason why most medics won't ask people to keep them at home).

Things that might help: warming hands up, taking nail polish off, sitting very still while reading it, breathing steadily and normally.

Readyme · 13/03/2020 20:54

@Nofoolfornoone I would add a multivitamin. And check you have enough stock cubes, herbs and spices and garlic to give food flavour.

CrunchyCarrot · 13/03/2020 20:55

Hello everyone. New to this thread but not to prepping, I started in the run up to Brexit and I'm very glad I did! I find it's been very useful as I'm largely house bound and am not in the best of health. It's also good for my anxiety as it keeps me busy. Today I've been working on getting a database of the stash so it'll be easier to manage for me and DP. Smile

ooopsupsideyourhead · 13/03/2020 20:57

@TemoraryUsernamei did wonder that too. I mean... why are they even in a packed supermarket if they are going to post about “stupid people getting close together in stores panic buying”

PatriciaBateman · 13/03/2020 20:57

Low carb ideas for prepping (I low carb):

Preserved eggs (my mainstay)
www.superprepper.com/preserving-eggs-with-mineral-oil/

Canned fish, tuna, corned beef, chicken in white sauce, hot dogs
Protein 'milkshake' powder - just add water
Tinned mushrooms (for omelettes)
Tea, coffee, and UHT cream
Peanuts/peanut butter
frozen cheese

Sprayitall · 13/03/2020 20:57

@PancakeFiend lots of sugary foods, hormones and time of the month -progesterone phase, stress, movement anything can contribute to that variation. As long as she feels fine it’s ok.

Topbird29 · 13/03/2020 20:57

@YellowPinkie - hi. Am de lurking. If can't eat too many cars, how about lentils and pulses? Can get pre cooked pouches or tins of lentils. These also last a while in their packs. Taste good if add some chopped toms, and have with sausages

PatriciaBateman · 13/03/2020 20:58

Nofoolfornoone

If you find it difficult to feel the pulse (many people do!) lay your ear on her chest and you will hear her heart beating.

Reastie · 13/03/2020 20:59

How long are people building supplies up to last? Are you aiming for 2 weeks worth or longer?

I have a special diet, and whilst I’m sure there will be enough food so people don’t starve, I do think there may be issues with availability of all items and there may be limited range of stock so I’m wondering how much prepping to do for things specifically to my diet.

sideorderofchips · 13/03/2020 20:59

I've noticed alot of people who originally went on about how it's nothing are now starting to change their tune

AWryGiraffe · 13/03/2020 21:05

@YellowPinkie you can get edamame and mung bean linguini from Holland and Barrett, it's obviously more pricey than pasta but it's pretty low carb and actually quite nice.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 13/03/2020 21:05

There will always be people slow off the mark.

Posharmchairs · 13/03/2020 21:08

Friends now panicking and grappling with ideas from all manner of random sources of “news”.

Anyone else feeling like they could sleep for a week?

Despite feeling set up, I’m finding it hard to resist the urge to want to go to the shops in the early hours and just “top up”.

misscockerspaniel · 13/03/2020 21:09

Popped into Waitrose after work (Channel Islands). Empty shelves and signs saying that they were empty due to "technical issues with the ferries".

Graphista · 13/03/2020 21:10

@pancakefiend was dd16 wearing nail polish? Was she sitting somewhere with direct light flashing onto it? Sometimes even if it’s a finger someone uses to refresh face make up can affect it

They are pretty fickle buggers to use to be honest

sideorderofchips · 13/03/2020 21:19

@misscockerspaniel i suspect we are on the same island. I saw the same

mylulab · 13/03/2020 21:22

Anyone could advise on the oxygen concentrator for asthma? I am planing to get one as during my last attack, I have waited 4h for an ambulance and that was before Covid-19.

colouringinpro · 13/03/2020 21:24

Need to try and get my parents to stock up on more food, esp as my email is gf

Feeling freaked tonight.

DitheringDoris · 13/03/2020 21:26

What a lovely calm and helpful thread this is.
