Prepping for Pandemic... 14

OK folks, we have been prepping for a Pandemic for 13 threads now. And a Pandemic we now have.

I think we all know this has gone beyond prepping now. And most of us agree that the UK Government has not really stepped up to the mark. We have had shared advice here from our Italian residents and those in other countries who have taken much more stringent measures.

So this thread continues to be about us being prepared. But it is more than that. It is about support, sharing of information and advice. It is now a community. A community who acknowledged a long time ago that this was always 'Not Just The Flu'

I thank you one and all for being here. We have tough times ahead. But we are all still here. Please share, rant, whatever. The great thing about these threads is that they have always been supportive and non judgemental. I like to think it's a safe space for all of us who are concerned. And trying to do our best. For ourselves. For our loved ones. And for our community and beyond.

Thankyou,, I shall have a google and learn about indoor growing, I love coriander however the dried coriander isn't as strong, will do if it comes to it but I need a new hobby.

I wish my garden was big enough to have a food patch!

@sprayitall and @pebble21uk
Do you know how you are supposed to clean them when you take them off. O have a P3 half elipse mask and filters. You can't submerge the filters in water so soaking it wouldn't work but.you would need to clean the outer bit when taking it off I think as the virus might otherwise be on the surface . I was considering spraying it with a 0.5% bleach solution but am worried it would ruin the filters

Seriously all this going... countries declaring state of emergencies and the department of health and social care have announced that they've created a fucking hand washing emoji !

While getting camping stuff together for DS1's DofE expedition, we found my old bug out bag stuff from when I was really into prepping when the DCs were small. Very happy to have found my lovely purple Opinel, but also found two tins of chili con carne that went out of date in 2015. I wouldn't normally be concerned but they are ring pull rather than normal so not quite sure I trust them. DH has promised to eat them though, so if Covid19 doesn't get him the chili may do!
We once ate a 10 year out of date Christmas pudding, it was lovely.

Over 70s isolating for 4 months? Hmmm. I imagine dog walking/walking for exercise is still OK as long as keeping Way from people. My FIL is in his 70s, MIL passed away a few weeks ago age 67 and the dogs are keeping him company and helping with routine, there's no way he will stay indoors for 4 months. BIL lives with him most of the week, so at least he can do the shopping.

bumblingbovine49 I think because they are 'sealed' around your face, as you say, the inside doesn't need cleaning. I was thinking Dettol wipes for the outside??

The fabric N99 masks can be hand washed in warm soapy water.
For anyone interested on the N99 Cambridge masks - have a look here:

Force 8 P3s can be bought on Ebay for around £35

I'm not using my mask unless I'm caring for someone ill.

I cant see how I'm not going be in the 20-40% that doesn't get infected. For me I feel resigned and ok with that. I'm being careful but 4 kids? I'm fucked

Has anyone seen this on the BBC website... thank God for some sane scientists! Boris needs to start listening and start giving advice - he seems to have disappeared! (Sorry probably wrong thread but I'm not keen on the others!!)

It’s quite a clever idea to isolate all the old people if they can actually pull that off the death rate would be much lower. Only sticking point is that we don’t know the long term effects of the virus for the rest of us. And we don’t know if getting it once creates immunity. 🤔 getting scared here

Sorry I've been absent from a lot of the latter part of this thread. But I still hold it dear to my heart. So I have created Thread 15. It's in the Preppers Board. Whether you are new to prepping, or an old hand, I wish you well. And I hope we all get through this.

@Sassenach85 it's a neat way of explaining it and it does make sense. However, the following
-if it were that simple surely other countries would do it.
-we aren't testing in the community, we o ly know how many cases we have in the system when they are already there and bringing quarantine in at that point, there will be cases still coming in due to lag time of incubation so we'd have another 2 weeks worth of cases on the way in.

  • the bucket will fill the bottle many many times over, BUT as he said we can only quarantine once. There are too many people for this to work, surely. The NHS will be overrun in a few weeks so we then quarantine, fine. We then release the quarantine and the system fills up again. But surely it will overflow again and then what do we do?

Neither approach seems to work in my head, I don't have the answer other than I think it's going to be shit wither way and many will die.

Legoandloldolls I'm intending starting wearing my fabric one tomorrow while visiting my very elderly and frail parents - both with several health conditions!

The P3 I shall save for future wear - I'm wondering about using it when I need to take my parents to hospital appointments - my Dad has a CT scan I need to take him to in a couple of weeks!

I've also got a box of FFP3 masks which I bought years ago and have stayed on top of a shelf in the box ever since - which I shall be taking them to give my parents tomorrow!

I'm getting scared too. I thought we was going to be protected from this virus meaning we stay indoors and won't get it but now it seems we're all going to get it and we're all going to loose people I really haven't got the strength for this.

Yes @Pebble21uk I have seen it. Two of my friends were signatories to the first letter! I was also so very glad to see that the second letter was from 200 behavioural scientists, questioning the premise of current models.

Both made strong, good points.

It will be hard for Boris to pretend now that he is just following advice from "scientists".

I'd say just chat on this thread whenever you need to @Mum2jenny It's been invaluable. Somewhere to voice fears and share tips with people who get it. Every time I read the news I get this sinking fear and this place helps calm me.

It's brilliant if older people are going to be protected - but what about those of us under 60 with underlying conditions? Are we expendable or is age the biggest risk? Also why over 70? Doesn't the risk increase from 60? I hope all vulnerable people are kept safe. I'm scared for DP and me but so worried and frightened about my elderly relatives. They're in their 70s and 80s. Agree @Blueberryham We don't know enough about it yet.

Thank you @FuckThisWind for the new thread. See you all over there.

The WHO keep saying how well China's approach worked. I know we aren't China, but will be interesting to see how their case numbers behave once their lock downs are over.
I do think our government are overdoing the whole older people and underlying conditions thing. That's like a third of the population, do they think we won't notice?!

Report
Gammeldragz · 14/03/2020 21:32

@tryingtoprep they can't say 60+, those people aren't retired yet (Dr's and nurses too!), if the government want us to keep working until we are nearly 70 they can't also say 60+ must isolate.
I'm guessing the same goes for underlying conditions, if you are still economically active the government doesn't want to tell you to stay at home. Plus that's a LOT of people (30+% at my rough guess).
