Prepping for Pandemic... 14

OK folks, we have been prepping for a Pandemic for 13 threads now. And a Pandemic we now have.

I think we all know this has gone beyond prepping now. And most of us agree that the UK Government has not really stepped up to the mark. We have had shared advice here from our Italian residents and those in other countries who have taken much more stringent measures.

So this thread continues to be about us being prepared. But it is more than that. It is about support, sharing of information and advice. It is now a community. A community who acknowledged a long time ago that this was always 'Not Just The Flu'

I thank you one and all for being here. We have tough times ahead. But we are all still here. Please share, rant, whatever. The great thing about these threads is that they have always been supportive and non judgemental. I like to think it's a safe space for all of us who are concerned. And trying to do our best. For ourselves. For our loved ones. And for our community and beyond.

Thanks for the new thread.

This has been a fantastic thread. Everyone so friendly, welcoming and calming. Ive felt a lot better being able to speak (and lurk) with people actually realising what was happening when most people irl had their head in the clouds and classed it as ‘the flu’.

@MoonlightMistletoe I just typed what I felt, and what I felt from all of you these last few weeks. It wasn't planned. I think we just get each other here.

@fuckthiswind that's a really beautifully written opening post. Scuse me, must have something in my eye.

Also going to be self isolating because of my cough and the kids coughs.

Thanks for the new thread - great opening post.

It is truly bizarre when something you've prepped for actually starts to happen. You always think it's a 'just in case' scenario and now here we are...and finally the majority are beginning to see the penny drop I think (with a 30-40% still thinking its media hype). That's my feeling anyway.

Certainly all of my friends now on board. Although a number of them are going to a restaurant on Saturday and I don't think I would be (I'm too skint anyway so haven't had to make the decision in that sense).

At least the self-isolating for a cough and/or fever gives those parents wanting to pull their DC from school a reason to do so without being fined or having to de-register for the next week anyway.

Joining new thread, thank you for starting it, haven't fully caught up on last one, frustrated and annoyed at people STILL saying it's just the flu.

Is anyone else wondering if their doubtful friends are suddenly going to have a change of heart?

Popping on to say hello and thanks for the new thread. This group does feel like a supportive community. I think these events highlight how much we all need one. Whether online or face to face.

Thank you for the recommendations a couple of threads back for gardening books. I have ordered the Veg in one Bed book. A treat for me to read, and use, over the next couple of weeks, months etc

@justmum89 you're right he does say more than 20 in ICU.
That's 3.3% of the total diagnosed.

@pemberlyshades as clear as muck them lot.

What does over 20 mean? Are we talking over 20 but under 30? Are we talking 100? It could be any bloody number 😡

One friend who said I was scaremongering just 2 days ago(!) just started to ask me questions about what lockdown is...

Some people are going to have a rude awakening if they do put more measures in place from the 20th as per rumours...

HELP please

Just had a blazing row with DH about taking the LO out of school. I want to just deregister him whereas he wants to face the consequences. We are apparently just going to keep ringing in with suspected symptoms. He's in a small school we don't need to do this. We can just deregister him and his space will still be there. Wheras if we just keep keeping him off indefinitely we run the risk of them chucking him out the school for good. Boris's map was scary - they had this going on slowly until the autumn. We can't keep him off that long without issues. But he just won't see that deregistering him is the easy option. He just spoke to me with such venom like I was some kind of idiot. I don't know what to do. If they're not testing people and keeping the figures quiet then they could keep the schools going for a very long time. Help please.

Not even going to attempt to catch up on everything that's been said since the last time I checked in at 2.30pm... if I tried we'd prob be on thread 15 by the time I caught up Grin

I'm sure I'm echoing what many have said in the last few hours but I'm utterly speechless at our 'ramped up response'.

As always, thanks for the new thread and for being the voices of calm and reason I need.

Thanks for the new thread.

Feeling pissed off with life generally. Thanks for the heads up to go shopping today. Still forgot sodding light bulbs. Got 60 watt bulbs in at the moment, destroying the planet. Have dimmer switch so harder to get. I had some spare but one turned out not to work although new, needed two, as both went within days and well before the time on the packet.

If I am well enough may venture out tomorrow.

Checking in.

I am so very disappointed with BoJo and his nonsense announcement. It feels like he will do nothing. Like he's playing Russian Roulette with this country.

Thanks for raising anxiety and stress levels you bloody buffoon.

Anyone got any advice on asthma... I'm
Wondering if I should get a nebuliser as me and my daughter both have asthma and it tends to get worse when we get poorly. Would I just get saline solution stuff to use in it? I have a spare set of inhalers for us both but worried as wheeze can come on real quick when either of us gets a cough/ cold.

@Posharmchairs I love that idea of sending a big in hamper to older relatives. I’ve been thinking about getting some things sent to my parents. Maybe we can all share ideas on here.

I’m thinking it would be easiest to place an amazon order and get it sent to them.

So, to start, maybe some extra essentials such as hand soap. I’ve already sent them a digital thermometer. Maybe a puzzle they can do together? Some books, a torch and batteries, brainstorming here....

Thanks for the tips about tofu. I bought some silken tofu this evening in a packet. We have veg in the freezer and jars of curry sauce and sachets of chinese stir fry sauces so we have a couple of options. It'll be an interesting experiment to see if the kids and DH eat it. If I cut it up quite small before cooking they may not even notice.

One thing I cannot find is yeast for the breadmaker. I've been able to buy the odd packet of bread flour here and there but am struggling to find yeast. I've seen some online though so may just order it there.

Waving and checking in.

Today has been a rollercoaster. We’ve been rolling out comms at work and really ramping up to send everyone home and try to make it work another way...then the Ireland announcement and I thought ‘this is it. Boris has found his brains and we will follow suit’.... then I watched him give his update. I went incandescent for about 15 minutes, now I just feel utterly deflated and flat. And tired.

And Boris giving his plans means my DH who just wont listen to anything other than ‘what the government recommends’ will now continue to go to far flung work destinations, hotels, exhibitions, meetings. All because Boris gave no advice about curtailing non-necessary travel.

Why does everything have to be so black and white? Why can’t they just say ‘at this stage, if you can do so with no issue, please undertake social distancing’ - even allowing people to take out of school optionally, on the basis that they must socially distance and stay out of the community, would surely dilute the issue? It would certainly assist immunosuppressed DC which I have.
