Prepping for Pandemic... 14

FuckThisWind · 12/03/2020 18:55

OK folks, we have been prepping for a Pandemic for 13 threads now. And a Pandemic we now have.

I think we all know this has gone beyond prepping now. And most of us agree that the UK Government has not really stepped up to the mark. We have had shared advice here from our Italian residents and those in other countries who have taken much more stringent measures.

So this thread continues to be about us being prepared. But it is more than that. It is about support, sharing of information and advice. It is now a community. A community who acknowledged a long time ago that this was always 'Not Just The Flu'

I thank you one and all for being here. We have tough times ahead. But we are all still here. Please share, rant, whatever. The great thing about these threads is that they have always been supportive and non judgemental. I like to think it's a safe space for all of us who are concerned. And trying to do our best. For ourselves. For our loved ones. And for our community and beyond.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-51892402 - sorry I couldn’t keep up the thread much today but had this been discussed? The scientists have come together to put an open letter now which is good I think

Orchidflower1 · 14/03/2020 21:42

My dear friend lives in South America at the moment. She was wondering about coming back ( health care etc) but her country has already started closing public gathering and showing sport behind closed doors. They have considerably less cases than us. Other local restrictions have also been applied. She’s going to update me more tom ( time difference). This is a country that I would not have expected such fastidious so early. Us however well.......

Tiredeyesalways · 14/03/2020 21:48

I've been lurking on these threads for weeks and just wanted to say thank you Thanks I feel well-prepared at home if nothing else, thanks to you all.
My anxiety is through the roof but I can't stop reading the news/commentary etc. Scrolling through the active threads list, I just had one thought tonight - where are the preppers? I need their calm thoughts and discussions! All is well now as I found you all Smile

Sprayitall · 14/03/2020 21:51

Oh just now scrolling back . Sorry if it’s been shared already. I just have couple of left overs of normal P3 mask that was bought for the builders during a paint job - the 5 pk ones from screw fix. I don’t know how to wear them and now I have a doubt - is P3 and FFP3 same or different?

wheresmymojo · 14/03/2020 21:53

Very amusing YouTube video - highly recommend...

Pebble21uk · 14/03/2020 22:02

Sprayitall I think that it's the same basic filtration, but the Force8 P3s have a face seal, whereas the papery fabric ones don't. The Force 8s are also reusable.

I saw something in the Daily Fail a while back (so who knows it's accuracy!) that a Force 8 3P will give you 100 times more protetcion from the virus than nothing, but then the FFP3 (I think) would give almost as much at 98% for a fraction of the cost. Don't quote me on it though!

Legoandloldolls · 14/03/2020 22:03

@Tiredeyesalways try to avoid the news. Only watch it once a day and not late at night. The sun has arrived so lots of walks in the fresh air ( in quite places of course)

Sprayitall · 14/03/2020 22:05

@pebble www.screwfix.com/p/delta-plus-m1300vc-moulded-disposable-valved-masks-p3-5-pack/6449r#product_additional_details_container - I have two left of this one, is it any good?

PancakeFiend · 14/03/2020 22:07

Thank you for the supermarket instructions, managed to do gran’s shopping from my own Asda account, it was easy to set up if anyone’s thinking of getting some bits in for relatives or friends who might be struggling themselves.

Legoandloldolls · 14/03/2020 22:07

@wheresmymojo 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Pebble21uk · 14/03/2020 22:11

sprayitall - yes, I think it's fine (although I'm no expert at all) certainly more use than the surgical masks you see people wearing. The thing to think about though is that it's designed to be disposable, so if you want to re-use it you need to be able to clean it, which depending on what it's made from might not be possible.

wheresmymojo · 14/03/2020 22:17

People are going nuts about the over 70s being told to isolate for 3-4 months on other threads.

itsnotjustflu · 14/03/2020 22:23

Struggling to find 15....can anyone pop the link please

Sprayitall · 14/03/2020 22:34

@Pebble21uk I couldn’t source much masks and everywhere it’s run out .. mum sent me few surgical masks through a friend because I asked them (it was a month ago in February) me or she had no idea this will blow up like this by then and as a low key prepper I got it for precaution- she sent me only 10 pointing me not to waste money lol.. now she wishes she had sent more but she herself couldn’t get hold of many (thankfully one of the pharmacy delivery came the next day after my friend left so she has around 20 to share between them. I am so worried for them as they both are elderly over 65’s and I’m stuck up here with no family nearby to help.

JellyFishSquish · 14/03/2020 22:38

wheresmymojo that was good, thank you

doneaflit · 14/03/2020 23:06

People who have bought nebulisers - can someone tell me what you put in them? And where to get that?

MidsummerMeadow · 14/03/2020 23:16

Seriously all this going... countries declaring state of emergencies and the department of health and social care have announced that they've created a fucking hand washing emoji !

That really made me laugh, thanks @MoonlightMistletoe (Gallows humour of course).

84TinsOfBeans · 15/03/2020 07:26

@butterflylove81 @ElizabethG81
Just catching up on thread and I'm sure your questions if what to buy have been answered but basically buy what you normally eat.

Wrote a list of your meals and write a shopping list from there. Include easy things too incase you are ill. Maybe a pot noodle or whatever.

On top of that you'll need a cleaning spray, loo roll, pet food, treats treats treats, calpol, paracetamol.

@JaneBond0007 re. Choosing a topic.
Great idea and it's what schools do but normally over a term. Sounds like you should be a teacher! Also @Readyme I believe it's Orchard Games that replace lost parts for free.

@Sprayitall I don't think your post was offensive. I think we can advise new people now if they aren't here to ridicule and they can be preppers for the next big thing.
As for slugs we put out jars of beer. It does kill them (and I'm a vegan of many many years) but... what a way to go.

84TinsOfBeans · 15/03/2020 07:42

Re. Slug killer for gardeners

Can I just say ( and I'm sure lots know this) but even slug killers that say they are pet friendly doesn't mean they are wildlife friendly. I'm all for killing slugs but if a bird or hedgehog eats a slug contaminated by slug killer they will also be poisoned.

Does anyone have any experience of nematoads. I read they are fab in year one but super slugs return after that.

84TinsOfBeans · 15/03/2020 08:02

I think I meant nematodes not nematoads

@lachy I love crochet too and Bella coco is great. Bag o day and woolly wonders are good too.

You could use cows milk instead of soya.

BlackeyedSusan · 15/03/2020 09:03

@InconvenientPeg

Gardeners' Question Time experts say that it is not easy to keep potted herbs alive on windowsill as they are overcrowded and grown rapidly. Better to grow slow less densly. If you want to grow them they nee taking out the pot, splitting and repotting.
