Prepping for Pandemic... 14

FuckThisWind · 12/03/2020 18:55

OK folks, we have been prepping for a Pandemic for 13 threads now. And a Pandemic we now have.

I think we all know this has gone beyond prepping now. And most of us agree that the UK Government has not really stepped up to the mark. We have had shared advice here from our Italian residents and those in other countries who have taken much more stringent measures.

So this thread continues to be about us being prepared. But it is more than that. It is about support, sharing of information and advice. It is now a community. A community who acknowledged a long time ago that this was always 'Not Just The Flu'

I thank you one and all for being here. We have tough times ahead. But we are all still here. Please share, rant, whatever. The great thing about these threads is that they have always been supportive and non judgemental. I like to think it's a safe space for all of us who are concerned. And trying to do our best. For ourselves. For our loved ones. And for our community and beyond.

Brighton and Manchester marathons have both followed London and are now cancelled/ postponed.

www.thesun.co.uk/news/11168074/medicine-millions-increase-coronavirus/ - Some medications are increasing risk

Legoandloldolls · 13/03/2020 20:08

@Oxyiz I personally dont think so. The very best Drs work in the NHS and private as a sideline. Plus NHS has the kit.

I think it might have racked up in price too?

YellowPinkie · 13/03/2020 20:09

Thanks Lego. I'm going to get everything out tomorrow and see what we have and then write down what we still need.

I have just spoken to my partner about how crazy it's getting and they've agreed it would be really crazy to sit and do nothing so my plan is to go shopping on Monday for a bunch of stuff.

Like I said to my partner, if we buy things we usually eat anyway and don't end up needing it for this well then it will just save us buying it for a few weeks/months. But what if we do need food and supplies and haven't prepared. I don't want to be one of the people in that situation.

It's not like it will go to waste.

YellowPinkie · 13/03/2020 20:17

One problem I have is that my autoimmune disease which is currently in remission, tends to flare up if I eat carbs like bread or pasta so I have to avoid those foods. A flare would mean steroids and I'm not going onto those during this crazy time.

I try to therefore eat a low carb diet. I'm. It sure what would be easy to stockpile for that. Maybe tuna would be good. And other canned fish.

I'm also thinking of slow cooking a bunch of chicken and then shredding it. Also shredded gammon. Takes up less space in the freezer.

I need to have a good think.

Heartyhooker · 13/03/2020 20:18

@YellowPiecision decision making was much the same , risk of prepping versus risk of not. As a resident of a Yorkshire town I have found the Co op and Boyes better sources of painkillers than supermarkets. And according to Boyes head buyer ( via school gate gossip) they have no shortage of toilet rolls

Nofoolfornoone · 13/03/2020 20:19

Hi all, can you please tell me what I’m missing . I live alone and have asthma. I have-

14 cook from frozen ready meals
14 cans of soup
Porridge and long life milk
14 bottles of mineral water 1.5 litres
Paracetamol
Ibuprohen
Thermometer
Inhalers and spares
Nebuliser
Oximeter
Peak flow
Freezer full of meat, fish and vegetables
Loads of eggs, nuts, tinned fish
Batteries
Matches
High quality vitamins
Full tank of petrol
Birthday cards for the next 3 months
Easter eggs
Toilet rolls I get delivered in batch and still have 36 left
Tissues
Lots of books to read
Hand gel
Plenty of soap
Food delivery slots booked for the next 3 weeks

What I still need to get is sanitary wear as everywhere is sold out and repeat prescriptions for thyroxine

Am I forgetting anything?

Sprayitall · 13/03/2020 20:20

Meanwhile the local Indian shop has restricted 10kg rice bags to 1 per person and lots of things like yoghurt, dosa batter, frozen curries - 2 pack of maximum 2 curries per person, tins to 6 per person, all other items two to three bags max

Legoandloldolls · 13/03/2020 20:21

@spraytail omg that link.i have high blood pressure but was put back onto labetalol when I got pg two years ago which is a beta blocker and have stayed on it. Lartasan is one of the most popular BP medicines 😭

YellowPinkie · 13/03/2020 20:24

HeartyHooker, I today found plenty of both type of painkillers in The Original Factory Shop so worth a look if you pass by one.

I've also filled the petrol tank because I'm sure that's going to go crazy soon. We don't have any planned trips but I don't want the option to be taken out of my hands.

Legoandloldolls · 13/03/2020 20:27

@YellowPinkie I bought some trays of chicken thigh fillets in Costco. ( family of six) I put four in sandwich bags, flatten the air out and knotted them near to the top. That way you can squeeze them into any freezer gaps. I was thinking tonight I can write a recipe for my tee to make soup. Defrost one bag. Put in pan with 2 litre water and two stock cubes, cut ends of a few carrots, perl onion, bring to boil.and simmer for 30 mins. Cool and blend to reheat as needed. I think he could do that

Sprayitall · 13/03/2020 20:31

@Nofoolfornoone - tea/coffee/milk, first aid kit, laundry soap, dishwashing soap, bin bags including disposable bags, more water, batteries, rice/pasta/oats,pasta sauce, flour and baking may be??

Legoandloldolls · 13/03/2020 20:33

@Nofoolfornoone that's a good list!

I have spare battery pack for mobiles, spare charging leads and plugs in case I have to go anywhere at short notice.

I have some diarraha tablets and lemsip, throat sweets too. If I have anything like cough / cold I need lemsip before bed. Possibly wont help much but I will take that risk 😉

HuggedTheRedwoods · 13/03/2020 20:34

@wheresmymojo thanks for that pic, first time I've laughed today. Grin

itsnotjustflu · 13/03/2020 20:35

The fool.......

NADINE DORRIES' MUM TESTS POSITIVE

Health Minister Nadine Dorries' elderly mother has tested positive for coronavirus.

Dorries told earlier this week how she was anxious she had infected her 84-year-old mother after she stayed with her in self-isolation.

The virus is particularly lethal to OAPs.

YellowPinkie · 13/03/2020 20:37

How does long life milk taste compared with normal full fat milk?

My kids drink it and my son has sensory issues so only eats and drinks certain things and doesn't like change. Do you think I'll be able to convince them it's normal milk in an emergency?

Sprayitall · 13/03/2020 20:38

@Legoandloldolls I have underlying conditions too and some meds are stressing me out . Also Does anyone know if metformin is an ace2 stimulator?

ooopsupsideyourhead · 13/03/2020 20:40

@CookiesAreForEatingNotStoring I’m so sorry to read about your situation.

People are starting to be horrible. On SM I see so many bitchy posts about panic buying from my friends, and photos of empty shelves and rants on local sites. Also, I’ve had a run in with a friend today who gave me an earful about being a “shitty person” for “stock piling” and said that I was “part of the problem”. She’s been coming to my house for years, the food I store in my basement and rotate through has always been there, she’s seen it (it’s next to the gin!). This last two weeks I have only bought fresh food. I think it’s panic and jealousy talking - she lives in the city centre and has one food cupboard that is normally pretty empty as she shops most days for whatever they need. She was talking about various things she was struggling get - stuff that I have lots of like baby wipes (as we bought a box before DC suddenly toilet trained in November) and paracetamol (as I get boxes of 500 due to a chronic condition). I offered her some and she exploded.

I’m feeling very bruised. Looking forward to a weekend just with DH and DC, who are more than happy with my prepping!

RhubarbTea · 13/03/2020 20:40

@Nofoolfornoone perhaps some more carbs, unless you are low carb? There is so nice, pasta or oats on there, or cereals or bread in the freezer? If those are things you would normally have. They can help to bulk out the other things and make them last longer.
Ditto tinned potatoes or fresh ones in a dark cupboard, or powdered at a pinch. The Sainsburys instant mash is pretty decent.

RhubarbTea · 13/03/2020 20:42

NO rice, that should say!

Readyme · 13/03/2020 20:45

@yellowpinkie do you eat GLUTEN free pasta? Supermarkets tend to do bags of it for a £1 I prefer the Penne and for it to be cooked in a sauce or in soup.
My DC has lots of sensory food issues as well as allergies it's been a bit of a
headache gathering food for her. I've tried my best to stick to foods I know she will eat because the whole 'they will eat if they have too, they won't starve' really isn't true for some kids.

PatriciaBateman · 13/03/2020 20:46

Hi all, can you please tell me what I’m missing

Optional, but some research to show they help with generic viruses:

-zinc lozenges
-nasaleze or Vicks First Defence nasal spray
-Listerine antiseptic (gargle at back of throat twice/day)
-elderberry syrup (eg. Sambucol)

PatriciaBateman · 13/03/2020 20:47

Does anyone know if metformin is an ace2 stimulator

No it's not. Most of the relevant drugs end in 'pril' or 'sartan'.

PancakeFiend · 13/03/2020 20:47

I’m not sure if anyone will be able to help me with this.. any nurses or doctors about?
So I bought a finger pulse oximeter and decided to try it out tonight to see what our normal rates were. Dh and I were fine plus two of the dc.. however dd who’s 16 had a very strange pr bpm. It kept fluctuating up and down, up and down. Was as low as 70 but went as high as 114 and did sit up there for a little while before coming down again. And then up again. And so on.
I’ve had a little google and it points to heart issues which is not something I was expecting to be dealing with right now 😭 We took it off and tried it again a few times and had the same results.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Sprayitall · 13/03/2020 20:48

@YellowPinkie It doesn’t taste the same. The full fat one feels slightly malt like .. skimmed and semi skimmed is alright but if you are going to use one, I would suggest you refrigerate them for a day. They don’t taste good if you have plans to have them in a cup (I add some anchor cream on top to make it palatable) but it’s better if it’s an ingredient in tea or coffee
