Prepping for Pandemic... 14

FuckThisWind · 12/03/2020 18:55

OK folks, we have been prepping for a Pandemic for 13 threads now. And a Pandemic we now have.

I think we all know this has gone beyond prepping now. And most of us agree that the UK Government has not really stepped up to the mark. We have had shared advice here from our Italian residents and those in other countries who have taken much more stringent measures.

So this thread continues to be about us being prepared. But it is more than that. It is about support, sharing of information and advice. It is now a community. A community who acknowledged a long time ago that this was always 'Not Just The Flu'

I thank you one and all for being here. We have tough times ahead. But we are all still here. Please share, rant, whatever. The great thing about these threads is that they have always been supportive and non judgemental. I like to think it's a safe space for all of us who are concerned. And trying to do our best. For ourselves. For our loved ones. And for our community and beyond.

I think a lot of friendships will dissolve/explode over this. It really does show the selfish/idiots/hard of thinking up!!

Amid the mayhem the Daily Mail Grin had a piece about how divorce rates have risen in China due to spouses having to spend time enclosed together!

My husband has just looked at me like I am insane for exolaining that after we get some final.bits tomorrow that's it.
He STILL doesn't understand the gravitas, even when I point to Italy.

When I started prepping weeks ago he laughed.
Last week when I suggested we write an emergency list of contacts and how to use washing machine etc he laughed.

He's talking about trivial events and things that are due to happen in a few weeks and I'm trying to explain that won't happen now.

I feel like a character in a disaster film. The one that nobody believes until it's too late Angry

So thank you to this board for being so prepped and informed!

Legoandloldolls

So peak at 11 doublings then. And hopefully a slower curve thereafter.

PatriciaBateman · 13/03/2020 19:26

Really shows how the exponential growth messes with our minds actually.

Takes 11 doublings to hit 20%, but only 5 doublings more to hit 80%!

I think we should start calculating with the actual cases infected right now (which they said it should be approximately 10k)

AnneKipanki · 13/03/2020 19:33

How do you freeze eggs @Posharmchairs ?

Just skip to step 3 or 4. Strange, how it really doesn't add much (couple weeks) to the overall timeline.

PatriciaBateman · 13/03/2020 19:34

edit - SUBTRACT much, sorry

Legoandloldolls · 13/03/2020 19:34

Oh the 11th doubling would be around four weeks from.now? So we could give a good guess that it will peak in 4-12 weeks but then it's going to be longer than that going down the other side until we hit hard immunity of 60%80% infected. Then I guess there will be a few other smaller peaks until a vaccine comes in?

So some scary months ahead but it could be over the worse by June July. Just in time for school summer holidays at a guess?

...Developed a problem with my hand. Certain noises from the radio make four out of five digits curl up. One finger seems uneffected remaining upright. Arm seems to have developed an Involuntary twitch as well...🖕

Just another tip for anyone looking to preserve eggs. They can last up to a year if coated with mineral oil.

Posharmchairs · 13/03/2020 19:40

@AnneKipanki freezing eggs: beat eggs with fork or whisk as if you were going to make scrambled eggs. Then pour the raw whisked egg into silicone ice cube trays. Freeze and then pop out into sandwich bags, I find you get approx 3 cubes to 1 egg.

To use, defrost IN THE FRIDGE. Then use as desired.

I’ve had lots of Prosecco this evening and Feel vindicated by dh thanking me for being organised and despite him being a piss taking t**t. (His words).

I love this thread so much such a calm in the storm that is out there.

I've had a big weight lifted tonight. DH and DS were supposed to be going to a gig in manchester next week and DH was refusing to cancel them going as they have waited 2 years to see the band. Band have just announced cancellation so big relief for me and we can really start to hunker down now other than DH work. I've got both kids home with me and have had them here for the last 2 weeks.

Hugs to everyone especially you cookie xx

MrsWhites · 13/03/2020 19:49

So based on those figures we roughly expect around 200 more cases every day until Tuesday. I’ve got a feeling, it will be even more (unless they mess with the figures to ‘show people that their measures are working’)

AuntImmortelle · 13/03/2020 19:50

So just had a chat with a friend who is a nurse in St Thomas Hospital, London. She said they're prepping/expecting the peak in 3 weeks. That is way earlier than BoJo etc was suggesting (no surprise there).

Mrsemcgregor · 13/03/2020 19:52

Doctors surgeries here are cancelling all appointments. Telephone consultations only from Monday, all existing appointments have been cancelled.

PatriciaBateman · 13/03/2020 19:53

Like testing no one in the community and only hospital admissions from here on in. Sad Angry

YellowPinkie · 13/03/2020 19:54

Hello. Newly here but glad to have found you all.

We have a small prep of food which we did ready for brexit but I have to admit we have been eating from it and it has dwindled a lot.

My partner isn't too worried about needing to have supplies but I feel like it would be silly not to?

We live in a small Yorkshire town and have a confirmed case which is apparently 2 roads away 😬

My partner manages a store in town so is in contact with loads of people daily and has to handle cash 😩

I have an autoimmune disease and we have two kids under 6

I'm ready for them to close the schools but I really need to stock up first I think.

Anyway. Hello Grin

Is it worth getting private health insurance do you think?

Legoandloldolls · 13/03/2020 20:02

Hi YellowPinkie

Make sure you have
Calpol and neourfen for kids
Thermometer and batteries
Spare batteries generally
Cereal ( a few brands if kids need to feed themselves)
Some easy to make and eat meals like cup a soups, instant noodles a good weeks worth or ideally two
Some longer life meals you would normally eat anyway ( week or two if you can)
I have also got cartons of juices I for the kids

Legoandloldolls · 13/03/2020 20:05

A few if of us also have oximeters from Amazon for about £20
Batteries I got from poind land
Go to the pharmacy and ask for adults nurofen and paracetamol too as it sounds like some people feel very rough for around two weeks.
