Prepping for Pandemic... 14

OK folks, we have been prepping for a Pandemic for 13 threads now. And a Pandemic we now have.

I think we all know this has gone beyond prepping now. And most of us agree that the UK Government has not really stepped up to the mark. We have had shared advice here from our Italian residents and those in other countries who have taken much more stringent measures.

So this thread continues to be about us being prepared. But it is more than that. It is about support, sharing of information and advice. It is now a community. A community who acknowledged a long time ago that this was always 'Not Just The Flu'

I thank you one and all for being here. We have tough times ahead. But we are all still here. Please share, rant, whatever. The great thing about these threads is that they have always been supportive and non judgemental. I like to think it's a safe space for all of us who are concerned. And trying to do our best. For ourselves. For our loved ones. And for our community and beyond.

Hi all. Sorry I'm just home from work so will catch up. Work was good. Everything I had a bit of a rant about 2 weeks ago has now been implemented.

This is the tinned spinach that was mentioned earlier. It's a large tin. I usually buy frozen and add it to all sorts, but its bulky to keep in the freezer. Its £1.40 and is usually next to the pulped mango in the world food aisle.

Hello, I've been following these Pandemic prepping threads for a while now but never posted on them. Just want to say thanks for all the invaluable advice given. Throughout the weeks I've been gradually stocking up. Just an extra tin here and there, long life milk, hand gel, gloves and so on. I'm so glad I'm not rushing to the shops right now panic buying! My anxiety is high right now but this is one thing I at least feel I have some control over. A friend laughed at me weeks ago, but not so much now. Thanks again, oh wise ones.

HasaDigaEebowai · 13/03/2020 18:20

We've just had a very stroppy email from school. "We are following advice, stop emailing us about stuff even though we haven't been communicating with you. If you chose to take your children out of school and not attend parents evenings don't expect us to give you feedback in any other way."

@FuckThisWind It was me, thank you! I’m going to try the big supermarket near work. Thanks!

noodledoodler · 13/03/2020 18:29

My union are now advising that concerned parents are at liberty to keep their child at home and a new attendance code is due to be issued (NI) for use during pandemic

VenetoResident · 13/03/2020 18:30

We can get frozen spinach in croquette shapes. In Lidl but maybe an Italian thing?

Legoandloldolls · 13/03/2020 18:31

@VenetoResident those are scary stats. Half of infected are in hospital and more die than recover.
Lets hope there are tens of thousands I'll and untested battling on at home

RhubarbTea · 13/03/2020 18:31

I am so profoundly glad for these threads and that I have prepped slowly since January (and long before that for Brexit). When I was in Tesco today the atmosphere was very edgy and extremely tense. Some young lads seemed to be almost wanting things to kick off? Weird and hard to explain but I know @NatoPMT mentioned something about that yesterday and it sort of clicked that some folk are going to be gunning for a bit of social unrest, even if many of us are not.

There was no rice, almost no pasta, no cheap paracetamol, hardly any tinned fish, potatoes or other tinned veg. People were prowling about in a bit of a panic and it just felt very uncomfortable and a bit scary. I was glad to get out of there.

I only popped in for a few things. I am now done, thanks to whoever mentioned tinned mushrooms and dried apricots respectively, good call. Also mango chutney!

Sprayitall · 13/03/2020 18:33

@Hasadiga This stroppy emails are annoying the shite outta me.. I got something like that a while ago .. 😅 Targeting and labelling concerned parents as panicky and their attendance procedures continuing as normal ..🙄 asking to keep calm and carry on my arse

VenetoResident · 13/03/2020 18:35

Cases by province if you have Italian connections.

TipseyTorvey · 13/03/2020 18:36

We've just had very sensible email from school (I like our head lots).postponed parents evening and lots of other stuff. Update on taking kids out if they have temps and warning school might close etc. Feels like they're taking it seriously.

VenetoResident · 13/03/2020 18:36

@Legoandloldolls - there absolutely are. Those being tested are the ones that have needed to go to hospital in this region. Even close contacts aren't tested - you should just assume you're positive if you have symptoms.

sideorderofchips · 13/03/2020 18:55

Yes over here the supermarkets are the same. Very edgy

middleager · 13/03/2020 19:09

@middleager how selfish. Stop’em before going to the pub.

They don't live by me but I have told him in no uncertain terms.

I cannot believe some people. My nephew, my boss and a MN poster on the 'should I go on holiday?' thread who has pondered about finding a COVID free country to holiday in!

PatriciaBateman · 13/03/2020 19:14

Population of UK: 66,440,000 (53 mill = 80%)

13/3/20 cases: 798

Cases doubled

  1. 1596
  2. 3192
  3. 6384
  4. 12,768
  5. 25,536
  6. 51,072
  7. 102,144
  8. 204,288
  9. 408,576
  10. 817,152
  11. 1,634,304
  12. 3,268,608
  13. 6,537,216
  14. 13,074,432
  15. 26,148,864
  16. 52,297,728 (79% of UK population)

So now the only calculation needed is how long per doubling. Then can work out a rough timeline, not taking into account any measures we could potentially (!!!) take to slow it down further.

AmelieTaylor · 13/03/2020 19:14

@bankittenheals.

I think a lot of friendships will dissolve/explode over this. It really does show the selfish/idiots/hard of thinking up!!

Tonight I had a woman telling me that hand gel is still easy to get 🙄 she thinks any old gel will do & despite explaining to her why it needs to be 60%+ she carried on to say her friend is making them some (with any
Old base & a bit of vodka & essential
Oils -because it smells
Nicer

Oh well, that’s ok then, as long as it smells nice. 🙄

It’s only just begun in the ‘general public’ and I’m already in my last nerve with people who think any hand gel/cleaning spray will do and that if it says ‘kills 99% if bacteria’ it’s outstanding.

I’m TRYING not to sound sarcastic when
I say the Corona Virus is a VIRUS, NOT a bacteria. But I’m fast failing.

PatriciaBateman · 13/03/2020 19:15

If we say a doubling takes 4 days, then we're looking at the end number (worst case) in 2 months.

preponderings · 13/03/2020 19:15

Sorry to hear you're going through such a tough time Cookies.

Switzerland closed all schools this afternoon until the Easter holidays. No notice!
They are allowed to provide childcare for working parents.
Restaurants, bars, clubs etc are limited to 50 people.
No groups of more than 100.
No visitors to hospitals or nursing homes.

Miaowse · 13/03/2020 19:18

I think they estimate is that it doubles roughly every 4 days. Is that 64 days-ish?

Graphista · 13/03/2020 19:19

@cookies I’m so sorry for all the stress and sadness your family are going through

Op thanks for your kind reply. I have made a telephone gp appointment (I also have asthma so need to discuss that too) but couldn’t get one till middle next week

Bellinisurge hope it’s ok but I pointed an anxious mner from another thread sort of in your direction. You’re right about the mental break. I’m avoiding the news except checking bbc news once a day and got “fun” radio on instead of usual bbc r4 or talk radio which is just too overwhelming at the moment.

“The Governments first & main job is to protect its citizens. Since when did that change?!” Quite honestly the second the tories were voted back in ESPECIALLY Johnson.

If he’s wrong about this which many of us fear, if he survives physically once he’s no longer pm he’ll just sod off to USA and be an american citizen and not give the Uk a backward glance! But then been saying that since he first showed an interest in being pm.

He’s all fur coat and no knickers!

I’d like to know the answer re zoflora too, I’m generally not a fan and will admit I like my forceful chemicals! But I may well get it as a sub

@middleager I’ve a delivery with Tesco ordered I’ve not used them for years and that email has reassured me on a couple points so thanks for that

Legoandloldolls · 13/03/2020 19:22

@PatriciaBateman it wont look exactly like that in reality. It will be a skewed bell curve, growing fast then dropping back down slower. Did they at last peak 1:5 will be off work? So it peaks at when 20% of the population is infected at the same time?

It's a rough guess but it gives a good idea

BlackeyedSusan · 13/03/2020 19:24

I am really pissed off that they are no longer testing in the community. Hiding numbers. Lying to people. I really hope that people will be held to account if it all goes tits up.
