Prepping for Pandemic... 14

FuckThisWind · 12/03/2020 18:55

OK folks, we have been prepping for a Pandemic for 13 threads now. And a Pandemic we now have.

I think we all know this has gone beyond prepping now. And most of us agree that the UK Government has not really stepped up to the mark. We have had shared advice here from our Italian residents and those in other countries who have taken much more stringent measures.

So this thread continues to be about us being prepared. But it is more than that. It is about support, sharing of information and advice. It is now a community. A community who acknowledged a long time ago that this was always 'Not Just The Flu'

I thank you one and all for being here. We have tough times ahead. But we are all still here. Please share, rant, whatever. The great thing about these threads is that they have always been supportive and non judgemental. I like to think it's a safe space for all of us who are concerned. And trying to do our best. For ourselves. For our loved ones. And for our community and beyond.

Just popping in so I can keep up with you guys. Have been dropping in for time to time. Thanks for all the helpful info and updates.

itsnotjustflu · 13/03/2020 14:19

chief medial officer in Italy has died of CV..... we could end up with hardly any doctors left IF Boris doesn't change tactics.

TipseyTorvey · 13/03/2020 14:21

Does no more testing mean the figure will only go up in single figures now based on hospital admits? The bbc reporting has changed its tune to 'herd immunity is good, most will get mild symptoms, keep calm and carry on'. Feels very much like 'shh shh little sheep, lie down and wait for the nice wolf, he won't hurt you...... Much'

Sprayitall · 13/03/2020 14:22

Wtf.. 798!! Disney makes better decisions .. close the schools and uni’s right now..stop external visitors to care homes. I’m just fuming right now

YoursTunbridgeWells · 13/03/2020 14:23

I am feeling overwhelming sadness. This is the end of things as I know them. Things will be very different for those that survive = as many people have said this is like a war scenario and it will scar the memory of all who live through it.

I did stew and freeze some apples today. Record number of subs on the ocado order like different soap, different shower spray, different spaghetti, but overall not too bad.

I have prepped by having 3 weeks orders booked. What the situation is like then? Who knows.

MrsWhites · 13/03/2020 14:24

I think I must have missed something, I didn’t realise they had said they wouldn’t test outside of hospital admissions? My understanding of yesterday’s non-announcement was that they were asking those with only mild symptoms to not use the 111 contact number (which I’m sure is going absolutely crazy at the moment) and that those already in hospital with respiratory conditions would also be tested but not that they would stop testing those outside of hospitals too?

Sprayitall · 13/03/2020 14:24

@TipseyTorvey it’s very scary 😭😭 if this has happened in India there will be hundreds or thousands in front of his home by now to protest until the decision is made

pemberlyshades · 13/03/2020 14:25

The Italian CMO has died? Seriously?! Wtf!

Legoandloldolls · 13/03/2020 14:26

chief medial officer in Italy has died of CV..

Fuck. Was he young fit and healthy?

I saw the statistics guy on the ITV. No one what that tripe was based on. Like the NHS wont get swamped. Italy's health system is one of the best in Europe- or is it not?

Our NHS Drs are top notch but they arent exactly overstaffed

Readyme · 13/03/2020 14:30

@Legoandloldolls he was 67 and actively working as a Dr in a hospital. Very sad news.

Legoandloldolls · 13/03/2020 14:31

Anyone good at maths or statistics here? If we go on the stats so far and we are following the number doubling roughly every four - five days. If this peaks in may, that's pretty scary numbers. We might be looking at doubling every four days until may?

YoursTunbridgeWells · 13/03/2020 14:32

And he wasn't the chief medical officer apparently - see whole thread about it on Coronavirus board.

Fivefourthree · 13/03/2020 14:33

Those new figures made me gulp!

MoonlightMistletoe · 13/03/2020 14:33

Just bleached door handles, every handle in fact in the house, and the banisters which I will now do a few times daily.
Defo need to stock up on sponges.

Cannot believe the increase today, everything is very gloomy and will be for a while yet.

:(

Readyme · 13/03/2020 14:34

I am.just so embarrassed by the shear arrogance of our government and all these so called experts offering opions. Do they think we are superior to the Italians, Chinese or S. Koreans?

InconvenientPeg · 13/03/2020 14:35

Saw an encouraging action list from one of the local secondaries with plans to keep an eye on vulnerable pupils and how to use the school as a hub for getting food parcels out if the schools close. We live on the edge of a hugely deprived area, this wasn't ds's school but another a mile or so away. Hopefully his school are sorting something similar, they tend to be very aware of the challenges that many of their pupils face and good at finding solutions to those. So glad that someone is taking action for those children.

I haven't coughed since the one coughing fit this morning so now debating whether to still go out tonight. I'm supposed to be doing the door for a charity concert. Def couldn't describe this as a persistent cough! Feeling dithery!

katewhinesalot · 13/03/2020 14:35

Just to say thanks to you guys. I've lurked on here for many threads but I feel the fact I feel relatively calm about things is due to you lot making me prep. I have a good stock of food and meds and this small amount of control is keeping me a bit saner.

I think the message is finally beginning to filter through to the great British public. Hopefully when the schools eventually shut, next week imo, people will actually adhere to the constraints. If he'd have shut them yesterday, many people wouldn't have been psychologically prepared for the sacrifices they are going to have to make.

VenetoResident · 13/03/2020 14:36

@Cookies.... I am really sorry. 🌷

@limberlost - do you know anyone that uses an inhaler? We must have 10 in the house. I'd happily give one to a friend.

@rhij86 - I try to avoid the news during the day too. I've just mopped my whole ground floor! Bleach fresh and CV free!

@MrsWhites - I believe it's true that the death rate is higher here because of the density of cases in Lombardy and therefore hospitals are overwhelmed. Also we have an elderly population. But the UKs isn't that different. The infected people in SK are on the whole much younger.

However, the UK will be fighting mini fires everywhere so the whole country needs to close down ASAP or the spread will be fast and wide.

There's been hardly any testing here for outside of hospital admissions. Apart from the small towns that were the initial two week quarantines. Goodness knows what our true numbers are.

@Legoandloldolls - I believe there is a north south divide in terms of health care. It started in the area with the very best health care. The rich area - with lots of travelling and holidaying business people....

Legoandloldolls · 13/03/2020 14:36

820,000 roughly by May? 1% die? 8200 deaths. Then you see it drop away with the same or less cases daily on the other side of the bell curve. That's no where near even 40% of the population catching it in the first round peaking in May?

AlohaMolly · 13/03/2020 14:49

I’ve just been round my office with the Dettol wipes and might go again with soapy water - is that an over reaction? Part of our job is going into different properties - I’ve been to six today. Six different key safes, Six different sets of keys, six different houses of fridge doors and door handles Envy (not envy.)

itsnotjustflu · 13/03/2020 14:50

the graph really scares me. They haven't included a graph for that could happen if we all isolate. It's as simple as here's what would happen if poorly people didn't stay at home and here's what will happen because they are....it goes on and on until autumn. How about the self isolate graph where we all try and protect each other FFS

@MrsWhites they said they're only testing those that go to hospital because they need to go to hospital

VenetoResident · 13/03/2020 14:52

AlohaMolly - I think I'd be happier with hot soapy water than the Dettol wipes.

I'm not sure how effective they are over a large area? 🤔

But don't let yourself become obsessed by it. Focus on not bringing CV into your office in the first place? Gloves, hand washing, plastic apron over your clothes?

AlohaMolly · 13/03/2020 14:53

I’ve just got the CBBC thing on Facebook explaining to children that it’s ok to be worried about coronavirus, but that the more you know the less worried you’ll be.

I’ve had a little cry now because I think things will be really different after, won’t they?

MrsWhites · 13/03/2020 15:06

@itsnotjustflu I must have missed that then, to be fair I stopped listening to him after a while 🙈

@VenetoResident I can’t even imagine what the true number of people infected are in Italy then!

At least sport seem to be taking the virus seriously this morning!

I’ve cleaned my kitchen from top to bottom with the dettol that their website recommends and then soapy water. Trying to focus on a particular area of the house each day to keep myself busy!

Sprayitall · 13/03/2020 15:06

Well I’m fuming / the school has sent an email that’s starts off like this

We continue to follow the most up to date government, scientific and medical guidance. It is important that we don’t get too caught up in panic. (I am the only one who didn’t send my kid to school and I feel m being targeted and they are classifying me as a panicky person)

“School attendance procedures will continue to be followed, only people with high temps and dry coughs can stay home for 7 days. No change in anything except slightly open windows for ventilation. Otherwise keep calm carry on” in bold..

How do you think we should react? Dh is furious too
