Prepping for Pandemic... 14

OK folks, we have been prepping for a Pandemic for 13 threads now. And a Pandemic we now have.

I think we all know this has gone beyond prepping now. And most of us agree that the UK Government has not really stepped up to the mark. We have had shared advice here from our Italian residents and those in other countries who have taken much more stringent measures.

So this thread continues to be about us being prepared. But it is more than that. It is about support, sharing of information and advice. It is now a community. A community who acknowledged a long time ago that this was always 'Not Just The Flu'

I thank you one and all for being here. We have tough times ahead. But we are all still here. Please share, rant, whatever. The great thing about these threads is that they have always been supportive and non judgemental. I like to think it's a safe space for all of us who are concerned. And trying to do our best. For ourselves. For our loved ones. And for our community and beyond.

This is probably a silly question- those who are getting click & collect or deliveries are you wiping them with antibac wipes or not bothering? I think I’m panicking now 😫

peachgreen · 13/03/2020 15:09

I don't think the figures (other than deaths) mean anything now, considering they're estimating that there's actually more like 5-10k cases. So no new deaths today is good news.

Legoandloldolls · 13/03/2020 15:11

I'm not wiping my deliveries. Im working on the assumption I cant fully prevent getting ill with four school age kids.

Just trying to delay getting it and hoping me and dh dont have it at the same time.

Sprayitall · 13/03/2020 15:20

@Babyfairy0923 yes I am spraying them all or give a quick wipe with dettol wipes. This is partially because I am trying to emphasise and teach dh and dd why is it important to be conscious, maintain hygiene and to teach them how viruses can spread etc

TemoraryUsername · 13/03/2020 15:23

@InconvenientPeg don't go, especially not onto the door.

I'm self-isolating with a cough. I had a streaming cold last week and I'm as certain as anybody can be that it is that and not CV, and mine is generally when I wake first thing then almost entirely gone once I have got going. I'm working on the basis of a) updated NHS guidance and b) nobody wants to catch a cold now.

CookiesAreForEatingNotStoring · 13/03/2020 15:24

MIL isn’t well enough to FaceTime sadly, she’s barely awake. Makes me feel so shit that she is lying there on her own.

I could vomit. Feel so churned up. Partner was with her 10 days ago.

The home aren’t letting visitors in, but on the phone said in this case we could. So it is serious.

I pray that her passing is gentle and quick. And that she is oblivious.

Who knows when / if we will be able to have a funeral.

What a complete mess.

KundaliniRising · 13/03/2020 15:37

CookiesAreForEatingNotStoring i am so so sorry, your poor mil, dh and you. I am glad that the home are letting you visit her, it is heart wrenching without the added worries.

Flowers and (((hug)))

KundaliniRising · 13/03/2020 15:40

Ps would a staff member help you by holding a phone to her on microphone, so that you and your dh can speak to her everyday? Even if she can not answer at least she can take comfort from your voices and know that she is in your thoughts.

Castoreum · 13/03/2020 15:40

I have a spray bottle of Dettol and a cloth by the front door so am giving things a quick wipe. I don't know if it will do any good, but it may help to delay picking up the germ.

Sprayitall · 13/03/2020 15:43

@CookiesAreForEatingNotStoring so so sorry to hear that.. it’s heart wrenching ..xx

CookiesAreForEatingNotStoring · 13/03/2020 15:45

Thanks Kundalini- they would let us visit but we live 6 hours away. Partner found out this week his cancer is back, And son has respiratory problems, so all in all we aren’t able to go.

I don’t think we can hurtle there to say goodbyes. We are already hunkering down and not circulating. Radiotherapy starts asap. But not if he gets ill.

I will ask about the phone calls, that might give us all a wee bit of comfort.

peachgreen · 13/03/2020 15:45

Once we get in to full isolation I'll wipe deliveries etc.

@CookiesAreForEatingNotStoring I'm so sorry to hear about your MIL. What an awful situation.

TipseyTorvey · 13/03/2020 15:45

I'm not wiping my delivery shopping. I'm wiping handles and work tops loads and washing hands, shouting at DC to wash hands but unless I intend for us all to strip and shower everytime we come in and out I just have to accept it's coming. It's like some invisible invader.

rhij86 · 13/03/2020 15:46

@cookies - so sorry for what you're going through with your MIL.

I've spent another couple of hours avoiding the news and the rest of the house is blitzed. Back down to earth with a bump at seeing today's figures though. I too managed to miss the fact that they are no longer community testing. I also noticed a change in the tone of reporting.... 'shhhh little sheeple, stop panicking, this is for the best'

DH made a decision a while ago to convert to my religion and the service to 'initiate' him was due to be Easter Saturday but he's been warned today that may not go ahead though.

KundaliniRising · 13/03/2020 15:52

Bleach can be used to make a disinfectant spray. Make it up outside or in a well ventilated area. I would not test it out on indoor clothing, but could be used on kitchen surfaces, hallway floors, school bags?

rhij86 · 13/03/2020 15:55

Oh also forgot to mention my cousin (newly qualified Dr) has been sent home from work today after developing a temperature and a persisten cough 😥

KundaliniRising · 13/03/2020 15:55

Sorry Cookies, i remember reading your post as to why you can not visit, my fuzzy head did not make that connection, i am so sorry, i really feel for you all.

itsnotjustflu · 13/03/2020 15:56

@CookiesAreForEatingNotStoring I'm so sorry :(

@Sprayitall Well they are wrong for a start as it's any kind of cough or a temperature - not both together. Sorry they are being awkward. I'm dreading a phone call next week. Although we will have to make more sensible decisions next Friday. My DS is at a small school and one other Mum I know of kept her LO off. There's also another but not same school

permanentlyfrazzled1 · 13/03/2020 15:57

@CookiesAreForEatingNotStoring I’m so sorry for the unbearable situation you are in.

hankyspanky · 13/03/2020 15:58

@cookies So so sorry to hear your news Flowers

@Sprayitall tell the school to jog on. Pretty damn sure you won't be the only parent not sending your child/ren. Our school put this in the weekly newsletter,

Coronavirus
We will continue to update you via Parentmail of any changes or advice that is being given by the DfE.
In the classrooms the teachers are using videos, songs and constant supervision to ensure that children are washing hands thoroughly when they come into school and throughout the day. When the weather allows we are teaching the children outside as much as possible.
In school Mr xxx (caretaker) removed all plastic screens and washed all walls, doors etc to the height that children can reach with disinfectant on Monday and is now following a rolling programme to ensure that all areas are covered during the week on top of our daily cleaning.
As a leadership team we are monitoring the situation within school and DfE advice several times a day. We are
preparing plans to support the children’s learning in the event of the school being closed in the future.
We will continue to review the situation but we feel that it is likely that we will not undertake our Grandparents Festival at the end of the term and we have put in a preliminary date into the summer term.

VenetoResident · 13/03/2020 16:00

@Cookies - could you ask them to put the phone on loud speaker next to her? They say that hearing is the last sense to go. It might give your DP some comfort to say goodbye?

MoreCoffeeNeeded · 13/03/2020 16:04

This self isolate one person in the house thing is hard. I am going around wiping everything DS touches just in case. Even though we think it is just a cold. He is mostly staying in his room tbf, but did come down to the lounge during the day due to being lonely. I am working from home today, but will need to go back next week. When the others came in from school I had wiped the whole house.

It has been one day and I am running out of wipes! Blush

AmelieTaylor · 13/03/2020 16:04

@CookiesAreForEatingNotStoring. I’m so sorry to hear about your MIL 🌷you guys need to catch a break!! Did you decide whether DH/you & DH will stay in the hospital family accommodation or not? If it was going to be for a decent amount of time I would & I’d clean it to within an inch of its life, but if it’s only a night or two I wouldn’t bother.

Jürgen Klopp. Can we vote this man in to be PM. His so each had me in tears. If he was in charge I’d feel quite safe.

If you haven’t heard it. See if you can find it on LBC.

I woukd try to link but I have to drive now - sorry

AmelieTaylor · 13/03/2020 16:07

@Elsa8

I got some tinned spinach in Sainsburys the other day. In store it was in the aisle with lots of Indian food near the big sacks of rice.

I haven’t tried it so no idea what it’s like, but it’s puréed spinach so I’m guessing they can’t go too far wrong with it🤷🏻‍♀️ And it’s a vegetable - works for me!!
