Prepping for Pandemic... 14

FuckThisWind · 12/03/2020 18:55

OK folks, we have been prepping for a Pandemic for 13 threads now. And a Pandemic we now have.

I think we all know this has gone beyond prepping now. And most of us agree that the UK Government has not really stepped up to the mark. We have had shared advice here from our Italian residents and those in other countries who have taken much more stringent measures.

So this thread continues to be about us being prepared. But it is more than that. It is about support, sharing of information and advice. It is now a community. A community who acknowledged a long time ago that this was always 'Not Just The Flu'

I thank you one and all for being here. We have tough times ahead. But we are all still here. Please share, rant, whatever. The great thing about these threads is that they have always been supportive and non judgemental. I like to think it's a safe space for all of us who are concerned. And trying to do our best. For ourselves. For our loved ones. And for our community and beyond.

I'm sorry to hear that about your MIL, Cookies.

(I've been lurking on this forum for a good while and am really grateful for the advice and support in it, sorry I know it's a bit creepy that I'm suddenly popping up.)

Blueberryham · 13/03/2020 13:17

I just wanted to pop on to say in case anyone hasn’t thought or this. If you have boys and don’t want to go to barbers. A set of clippers is a good idea, they are very easy to use

rhij86 · 13/03/2020 13:22

@colouringinpro 1 bar of chocolate/tub of salted caramel hagen daaz per room ;)

RhubarbTea · 13/03/2020 13:22

@permanentlyfrazzled1 I'm in the SW so probably not the same. But I bet it's happening all over the country!

rhij bargain 😁

hankyspanky · 13/03/2020 13:33

@Sprayitall I wasn't in the mood to be rational and explain my reasoning but I really don't care what they think or do. I'd be quite happy to home school anyway if it came to it.

Baby was born 12 weeks premature so have to be extremely careful not to go near any known infections. Actually, as i typed that I just thought, thats my valid reason!!!

Does anyone think Bojo may actually be knocking up a cure (instead of his stream of mistresses) which explains his complacency? I think I may have lost the plot now completely!!!! Grin

Posharmchairs · 13/03/2020 13:37

@CookiesAreForEatingNotStoring I’m so sorry. This must be so devastating for your family. This inaction will make your story far too common.

Thinking of you Flowers

MrsWhites · 13/03/2020 13:38

@limberlost I’m exactly the same, I had asthma since childhood and up to about 7 years ago I had brown and blue inhalers. I stopped taking them during pregnancy as they started making me feel shaky and by then my asthma was more seasonal anyway. In the last couple of years I have struggled every time I get a cold so I went to see my doctor who decided that I was no longer asthmatic. I’m worried now that if I catch the virus I will end up very ill so I am going to order a blue inhaler online from Superdrug.

Posharmchairs · 13/03/2020 13:40

News from Madrid, awaiting government to declare state of emergency, and bars, shops and restaurants to close imminently. Friend suspects flights may soon be banned.

Heartyhooker · 13/03/2020 13:46

@CookiesAreForEatingNotStoring sorry to hear about your MIL, I work in residential care and in such cases we work very closely with community health teams, to monitor clients condition and regular reassessing . Can you skype? We have always done this for far away relatives and even for family weddings.

Feeling slightly more positive this morning after getting a good haul together from ds2's primary for the local food bank. Just about filled an estate car with boxes and bags. Could also see TAs taking groups of children for hand washing as we were collecting and they have cancelled next week's spring fair.
Email from ds1's secondary staying they have stepped up the cleaning of communal areas massively and insisting on handwashing.

Justmum89 · 13/03/2020 13:53

Hey everyone and sending hugs to all that need them.

I too have tried to avoid the news and SM this morning. Me and the kids have been on a lovely dog walk. It was nice to get outside and get some fresh air. We live in a nice quiet area and didnt see anyone on our travels. Home now and going to bake some cakes and play minecraft with the kids for the afternoon 😊

Legoandloldolls · 13/03/2020 13:53

Afternoon. I feel a bit better now. I went to my adult ed class and it was nice to have some normality.

Poundland had lots of £1 dettol 440ml sprays so I bought two. One for mum and one for her neighbour.

My sons private school has said that only the pupils can attend their Easter fair and service.

I feel so tired today. Stress isn't good for us. I'm aiming for a normal ish weekend bar a long drive to my mum.

MissusMaker · 13/03/2020 13:58

If they've stopped testing people in the community with symptoms (such as they ever were) and are now only testing people in hospital with symptoms what does that mean for the daily numbers do you think? I know they were always wildly inaccurate anyway but just wondering?

MrsWhites · 13/03/2020 13:59

Did anyone hear the guy on BBC news about 20 min ago. Explaining why the UK is not on the same track as Italy, these were his reasons:

1 - Italy are almost fighting two epidemics, one large very established one in the North and a smaller less advanced one in the south. Cases in England, Wales and Scotland are far wider spread.
2 - the death rate in Italy is far higher than in the UK, approx 1% in the UK against almost 7% in Italy, he explained this is because Italy’s hospital network is completely overwhelmed. THATS EXACTLY THE POINT - WE NEED TO LEARN FROM ITALY AND IMPLEMENT SOCIAL DISTANCE MEASURES BEFORE WE GET TO THAT POINT!!!

I can’t even remember his third point because it was all total and utter rubbish!!

Sprayitall · 13/03/2020 14:00

Former health secretary has raised his concerns
www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/coronavirus-uk-boris-johnson-jeremy-hunt-pandemic-nhs-covid-19-a9399076.html And I think his idea of running “skeletal service” at schools is not a bad idea at all

ofwarren · 13/03/2020 14:01

UPDATE on coronavirus (#COVID19) testing in the UK:

As of 9am 13 March 2020, a total of 32,771 people have been tested:

31,973 negative
798 positive

10 patients who tested positive for coronavirus have sadly died.

The digital dashboard will be updated later today. t.co/Q6CP4QzDzK

AuntImmortelle · 13/03/2020 14:03

798!!!!

Elsa8 · 13/03/2020 14:05

Fucking hell! That’s crazy considering all the measures we’ve put into place to try and stop the spread. Oh no, wait...

QueSera · 13/03/2020 14:07

Up 208

itsnotjustflu · 13/03/2020 14:09

205 increase I think. But those are all the people tested before Boris's announcement so I bet it will be a lot less tomorrow

QueSera · 13/03/2020 14:10

When will our most excellent measures of 1) stay home with cough/fever, 2) no overseas school trips and 3) no elderly on cruises start to lower the numbers? Hmm

MrsWhites · 13/03/2020 14:11

Wow! My guess was around 750 today. If you look back at Italy’s figures around end of Feb, they went from around 600 cases to just short of 1000 within a day. Yet we are supposed to believe that we are a good month behind their situation.

They will blame today’s figure on the larger number of tests carried out but the percentage of positive cases to tests carried out is the highest it’s been at just shy of 7%!

itsnotjustflu · 13/03/2020 14:11

I can't count lol

sideorderofchips · 13/03/2020 14:17

Holy

My guess was 730.i was not expecting that
