Prepping for Pandemic... 14

OK folks, we have been prepping for a Pandemic for 13 threads now. And a Pandemic we now have.

I think we all know this has gone beyond prepping now. And most of us agree that the UK Government has not really stepped up to the mark. We have had shared advice here from our Italian residents and those in other countries who have taken much more stringent measures.

So this thread continues to be about us being prepared. But it is more than that. It is about support, sharing of information and advice. It is now a community. A community who acknowledged a long time ago that this was always 'Not Just The Flu'

I thank you one and all for being here. We have tough times ahead. But we are all still here. Please share, rant, whatever. The great thing about these threads is that they have always been supportive and non judgemental. I like to think it's a safe space for all of us who are concerned. And trying to do our best. For ourselves. For our loved ones. And for our community and beyond.

@BanKittenHeels 💐

Just found out that my DSis is working at the CGC. 😰😰😰😰 She's under 40 and healthy but my DM isn't.

Ireland supplies seven of the runners in Friday’s big-race field and 59 of the likely starters on the day as a whole. Every horse has two or three staff to accompany it, who will return to a country on lockdown on Friday evening. Yet as all this was happening elsewhere, the enclosures were filling with around 65,000 racegoers, many of whom will be back again on Friday on their annual pilgrimage to watch steeplechasing’s championship event. Some, no doubt, will have second thoughts, and last year’s record attendance of 71,849 is unlikely to come under threat.

@colouringinpro a local school where a friend’s daughter goes has been very proactive in providing sanitizer in every classroom, at corners of corridors etc but they’ve now informed parents that it will have run out by the middle of next week and have been unable to source anymore. They’re a big school - over 1000 students - so even if they allowed hand washing in the toilets inbetween every lesson, which is what’s needed, the system will pretty much grind to a halt. It’s a joke!

colouringinpro · 13/03/2020 11:46

yes permanently exactly. My kids school sanitiser has run out...

permanentlyfrazzled1 · 13/03/2020 11:51

@colouringinpro well, it will help Boris get his required 60%! 😩

AmelieTaylor · 13/03/2020 11:52

@BanKittenHeels

That’s all very scary stuff 🤬

I bet the people in pharmacies are worried, the poor things deal with all the buggy people anyway, this is just awful for them.

How are you feeling now. I hope you will be looking after yourself & self isolating for 7 days. You need to do that for yourself (to get well) as much as for others

I guess it might be better if DH sleeps elsewhere for a few nights.

Look after yourself 🌷

AmelieTaylor · 13/03/2020 11:58

How do they propose to know when we have hit the. Miracle 60%

Yesterday I had this thought.

We can’t even bloody we’ll go to London to protest!. He’s really got us cornered hasn’t he.

It’s their job to PROTECT us 😢

Some ‘specialist’ (Irish lady) quite high up was saying she’s VERY disappointed in the inaction of the Govt & explaining why the ‘let it run’ policy is not a good idea.

She said herd immunity won’t work as it’ll be different by next year & wouldn’t last long anyway.

Sprayitall · 13/03/2020 11:59

@hankyspanky my friend has had her second baby recently too and also has her elderly mil staying with her to help. It’s ridiculous that they are asking the other kid to come to school with the absence lecture knowing very well there are three high risk people at home one recovering from
Emergency c section, one tiny new born, and an elderly with preexisting conditions. Sadly the area we live in has lot of the “it’s just the flu” brigade who follow the government guidelines to the tee — more of a pretence I should say for their own convenience and money / doing this to save their asses off babysitting young kids.

MrsWhites · 13/03/2020 12:12

A lady I know works in a childcare setting, she has received an email from the local authority this morning again advising them to prepare for closure from next Friday so I still believe this will be the case.

Picked up a couple of garden toys at home bargains this morning, hoping the weather improves when schools do close.

Anxiously awaiting the 2 o’clock updates!

Sprayitall · 13/03/2020 12:13

Could people who have conditions that make them high risk sign and share this school petition please. I’m sure no proper action will be taken but it makes me feel a little better that I am atleast trying my best as a parent with underlying conditions myself

BBC Newsround -
We've had lots of questions from children about Coronavirus. So we asked @DoctorChrisVT and @xandvt to answer some of them.

AlohaMolly · 13/03/2020 12:23

So we have a confirmed case on Anglesey, the island where I work. I thought we’d have a few more days but apparently not. It’s skipped the county where I live but it’s either side of me now and I’m going to insist that tomorrow is the last time we say my 70 year old in laws. My Mil was joking with me this morning about it because she knows I’m anxious but refuses to take it seriously Sad

Posharmchairs · 13/03/2020 12:35

Hamper delivery to elderly relative and they’re doing brilliantly.
Elbows if anyone has tried to shake their hands, wearing gloves to their essential appointments, listening whilst I explained about the frequency of hand washing and promised not to go out to busy places where possible.
I told them the hand sanitizer was a last resort and that it was liquid gold.
Called in on dm who was writing a list and asked for my input, did a lot of eye rolling when I told her she would likely need to visit several shops to get everything on it.

Thank you for the onion dehydration advice. I’ll definitely do a load tonight as we get through plenty and the freezer is packed.

RhubarbTea · 13/03/2020 12:38

Interesting to see that within the home ed community, a parent organizing a regular monthly educational workshop is having a lot of people saying they don't want to do this month as they are staying in/cutting back on the types of indoors events they are attending. That's quite encouraging in a way and also of course scary because it feels like the pandemic has permeated every aspect of life, even with a kid who doesn't attend school.

I think a lot of folk are waking up to the fact that, although we are a democracy, in this country the gov has a hand in everything and is quite strict and oppressive in a lot of ways. And that is a rude awakening for many Sad
I haven't slept well for the last three nights and need to keep napping in the day. I'm going to try and kick that habit today and push through.

inmylifeIlovedthemall · 13/03/2020 12:40

That is so lovely Posharmchairs

The boost to your relatives mental wellbeing, just knowing she is loved and cherished, will be as important as anything else in that hamper.

limberlost · 13/03/2020 12:41

Is it possible to obtain inhalers without a prescription?
Many years ago I was told I was asthmatic and given both brown and blue inhalers.
I rarely used them except when I had a very bad cough when I found they helped.

I moved to another area and having run out of my inhalers and having a nasty cough I asked the GP to prescribe them. He tested me and said I wasn't asthmatic but after a lot of discussion allowed me to have one on that occasion.

I am not sure I can face the hassle of trying to persuade the GP to prescribe them again.

rhij86 · 13/03/2020 12:43

@BanKittenHeels sorry to hear you are not feeling well, especially with those symptoms... I guess you now have to go into self isolation for 7 days?

Thank you to you and your DH, to ALL NHS and frontline staff, for everything you do

rhij86 · 13/03/2020 12:45

This morning I've totally avoided the news. I've blitzed the whole upstairs of our house - tidied, sorted old clothes etc, deep cleaned, while listening to my podcast. It's been exactly what I needed to perk myself up a bit again, although I know it won't last long :\

Coughsyrupsucks · 13/03/2020 12:49

@limberlost you can buy them both online and get them delivered without prescription, have a google. I get mine from Superdrug Online Doctor, they just ask a few questions.

Elsa8 · 13/03/2020 12:50

You used to be able to get blue inhalers over the counter from the pharmacies in Asda, I did that once when I couldn’t get a GP appointment to sort out a prescription.

colouringinpro · 13/03/2020 12:50

sprayitall that's terrible for your friend. if i were her I'd ring in and say the child had a cough/or just withdraw them. It's just not worth the risk.

colouringinpro · 13/03/2020 12:51

rhij that's brilliant! how much do u charge? Wink

Sprayitall · 13/03/2020 12:55

I have this doubt. Can anyone who knows this explain - the previous petition for school closures had this waiting for 1 day for a debate date initially.. now slowly it changed and says “waiting for 6 days for a debate date” why is this?

CookiesAreForEatingNotStoring · 13/03/2020 12:59

95 year old MIL won’t survive this. She is in a care home and already very unwell. They have closed to visitors. She has had gp and paramedics out last night. They rang partner, suggesting he came in, not realising our situation and that we live 6 hours away. Basically asking for his permission to not take her to hospital, and just make her as comfortable as possible.

permanentlyfrazzled1 · 13/03/2020 13:00

@RhubarbTea I wonder if we’re in the same community: that’s just happening with a monthly group I’m involved with - in the east of the country, not far from the coast and one of the Queen’s residences?

DS1 gets prescribed an inhaler if he has a chest infection but doesn't use them day to day. I've bought a couple at superdrug onine just in case..
