Prepping For A Pandemic ....9

wheresmojo asked at the end of thread eight if other posters could keep an eye on threads filling up and start new ones if possible as she’s busy this week and may not have the time, saw thread 8 getting full so thought would start number 9 before going to bed. Thank you to ofwarren for the live updates too. I’ve copied and pasted the info that wheresmymojo has included in every thread, hopefully formatting doesn’t mess up.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar thanks Flowers

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Sorry, NHS not NGS..

LightofMine · 03/03/2020 17:28

It might uncover more cases as they are going to test all ICU patients. We may get some idea of bed space once they've had a count up.

Breaking news but I suppose its just standard protocol given the situation.

Some countries (Italy, South Korea and Iran) definitely seem to be taking more of a hit. I would like to know if there's any reason behind that as well or is it just a case of it hasn't taken its hold here yet and we will see similar numbers in the coming weeks. Italy locked down quickly as well so how has it spread so much and affected so many people? It's very worrying Confused

nellodee · 03/03/2020 17:42

I think it hit a retirement communiity in Italy first. I've got no evidence for that, but there seemed to be a lot of people over 80 coming down with it, and they're not usually the people who are moving around and catching things the most.

NatoPMT · 03/03/2020 17:50

@LightofMine

I forget where I read this yesterday, but an Italian wrote that their testing us much more prolific, than say the USA and that they are too honest for their own good, this opinion piece was their hit is because they are better at testing and more transparent

Their comment about the US rings true given the US are assuming a silent spread

My friend is at the clinic and saying he’s being treated like a hazmat, he’s in good spirits 😊

RedLentilYellowLentil · 03/03/2020 17:56

"The Briton, who tested positive for the virus on Monday evening, had not been isolated in their room as they had not presented any symptoms, the authorities said."

I've just read this in relation to the UK case in the hotel in Tenerife and it makes me so exasperated. Not at the individual, who I'm sure has only been following instructions, but at this ridiculous idea that people showing no symptoms are probably fine to go about their business as normal, which we've been hearing since the very first UK case in Brighton and are still hearing now.

I don't get why, if the plan genuinely is to contain this virus before it runs wild, more emphasis isn't being placed on restriction of movement, particularly back here at home where it could still make a difference. They were talking on Sky News last night about how now is the time to suspend sporting fixtures etc, not at some unspecified time in the future when it's probably too late to do any good. Angry

That said, nothing but sympathy for the poor people stuck in Tenerife, many of whom were only still there because of the sandstorms, and who must be beside themselves with frustration and worry.

Hmm what an idiot

That isn’t the plan. They can’t contain it. They’ve already admitted that 80% of people will probably catch it. The plan is to slow it down and avoid everyone catching it all at once, so the NHS and the economy can cope.

Italy March 3, 2020, 6.00 pm

POSITIVE 2263
DECEASED 79
HEALED 160

Among the 2263 positives:

1000 are in home isolation
1034 hospitalized with symptoms
229 in intensive care

But they're not testing symptomatic people unless they need hospital help so there will be loads more cases who are mildly symptomatic at home.

I think the kissing culture and the bar and cafe culture probably has a lot to do with it. People are close and friendly here. Also the North of Italy has had a terrible winter pollution wise - maybe people have already been suffering with other respiratory issues?

LightofMine · 03/03/2020 18:04

@NatoPMT Thinking of you and your friend and wishing him a speedy recovery, at least he's called for help now and is hopefully being treated.

I did read about USA and the cost of the test even with insurance so don't have much faith in their figures or even the UK, given previous comments on here of posters who have tried calling 111 for testing. I did work out the percentages of cases on the Diamond Princess but there are too many variables for an accurate indication of recovery / death in wider populations.

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 03/03/2020 18:04

Catching up on the thread now and see a few people recommending Jack Monroes "tin can cook" I purchased it last week and i really don't rate it at all. Recipes include adding water to a tin of oranges and blending to make orange juice. Home made baked beans, consist of rinsing tomato sauce from normal beans and then replace tomatoes sauce with a tin of tomatoes. Seems a bit wasteful.

The one star reviews of it on amazon are pretty accurate imo. Not read her other books though so they may be more inspiring but I'm returning my copy as there's nothing inspiring in it.

How are you and your family feeling now @VenetoResident?

nellodee · 03/03/2020 18:06

Didn't Delia do a store cupboard cooking series once?

VenetoResident · 03/03/2020 18:07

This is the hope of social distancing in Italy - wave vs tsunami.

This bloke is worth following if you like a graph!

They’ve already admitted that 80% of people will probably catch it.

No, they are making sure they have plans in place for this as an absolute worst case scenario.

Question-aloe Vera to make hand gel with IPA, where do I get it please?

VenetoResident · 03/03/2020 18:10

My DS went out for a walk today - first time in 2 and a half weeks he's walked further than the toilet. He was still breathless but he was stood up for 30 minutes so he's definitely on the up. Three doses of evil antibiotics left! I imagine he'll be wiped out now.

VenetoResident · 03/03/2020 18:11

@NatoPMT - I hope your friend makes a quick recovery! 💐

AmelieTaylor · 03/03/2020 18:14

@TheElementsOfMedical. Thank you, that makes sense. 😊

@WorryAboutCovid. I’m really pleased the school has cancelled the trip. Firstly because I think it’s the sensible thing to do for all concerned and secondly because it’s one less thing on your mind- it’s all draining trying to make the best decisions 💐

Legoandloldolls · 03/03/2020 18:16

Disclaimer as it's been a long time since I graduated but alcohol.breaks down the cell membranes on bacteria. Viruses are not like bacteria but I "think" it's the same principle, it breaks down the outer of the virus disrupting its physical structure. Hand washing your physically flushing the germs away down the sink.

Again I am.guessing but less than 60% maybe it less likely to evaporate away and be wiped off onto clothes?

HasaDigaEebowai · 03/03/2020 18:21

Apologies if this was mentioned earlier but BBC reporting that Italy is considering putting Bergamo into lockdown which would be really good for us in terms of reducing travel to Northern Italy (assuming it includes the airport)

NatoPMT · 03/03/2020 18:25

@VenetoResident my Japanese friend said her cultures refusal to hug/ kiss vs Italians love of kissing is why Japan’s infection rate has stayed comparatively low

Thank you for the best wishes 😊

AmelieTaylor · 03/03/2020 18:25

@plantherd. Good score with the freezer!

Do you make any dishes such as vegan lasagne or vegan boligause? Basically any meals you normally have that you can freeze so that if you’re feeling crap you have a meal in that just needs defrosting & heating and with the bonus that I’ll taste decent & have some nutrition in it?!

If I had a big freezer I’d be thinking about freezing as much fresh veg as possible, whether already made into meals or not.

I’d be storing up the lentil bolignause etc, just so I don’t have to cook when I’m feeling more pants than usual.

Legoandloldolls · 03/03/2020 18:26
