Prepping For A Pandemic ....9

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 01/03/2020 23:57

wheresmojo asked at the end of thread eight if other posters could keep an eye on threads filling up and start new ones if possible as she’s busy this week and may not have the time, saw thread 8 getting full so thought would start number 9 before going to bed. Thank you to ofwarren for the live updates too. I’ve copied and pasted the info that wheresmymojo has included in every thread, hopefully formatting doesn’t mess up.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar thanks Flowers

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Thanks for the new thread.
These threads have been incredibly useful.

Bulgar wheat is a cheap grain 500g bags in Asda for around £1.15 my husband much prefers it to couscous. One bag tends to make us at least 5 big portions to share.
I make it with a chicken stock cube, garlic, a little onion, couple of slices of red pepper finely chopped. Can be a side dish or at gets cheese to it and make a meal.

I watched Contagion tonight, not sure if it was a good or bad idea but it’s certainly not dampened my concerns about social unrest

Thanks for the new thread @ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu.

How appropriate that it is started by poster with that particular user name. Grin

Legoandloldolls · 02/03/2020 00:57

Thanks for the new thread. I wanted to stay in tomorrow but I think.i might get some last bits done. I'm not sure what to do. My son is a fussy eater so if I was ill I need to know the older son can feed him easily.

I might see how the news pans out at lunchtime

Destinysdaughter · 02/03/2020 01:01

On the previous thread someone asked about how to prep on a low income. This may have been mentioned elsewhere but Jack Monroe's Cooking on a Bootstrap is good.

Family friend is getting rid of a 140l (i think) chest freezer and asked if I'd like to take it off their hands. Hoping to pick it up mid week and need to think about what to stock in there. (vegan family) could only really think of a variety of fruits and vegetables? Possibly fresh/depending on price and freeze myself. Any ideas?

BridgeToTerabithia · 02/03/2020 01:15

pmk

TenShortStories · 02/03/2020 01:35

@plantherd what about bread and batches of homemade soups for your freezer?

MinesaPinotPlease · 02/03/2020 02:05

Following on from Utah’s post on thread 8 I also have a reluctant to prep or take it seriously uni student.

At that age they feel invincible but he has a long history of respiratory issues as a younger child so I worry.

Last night sat him down by FaceTime and talked it though. Transferred him some extra cash and told him he had 48 hours to prep with it and I want to see his stash :)

Then sent him a suggested shopping List.

I am very hands off Normally but explained that him having nothing in was bothering me a lot and could he just humour me. Shock

if he thinks I am interfering too much he may dig in his heels so it’s a fine balance of using gentle persuasion and suffering he adds chocolate and beer or his stash to sweeten the pill.

He is used to living off bland store cupboard food as a student so he should be fine on a diet of porridge and pasta and beer. Smile

MinesaPinotPlease · 02/03/2020 02:06

Suggesting not blinking suffering

I bought an instant pot a month or so ago, I don't really cooking and for a long time was scared of pressure cookers but since getting mine I've used it several times a week and love it for making soup with veg that needs using up.

There's some brilliant YouTube tutorials on meals you can prep and bag to put in the freezer that you can just lift out and dump in to cook from frozen, great if you're ill and don't want to stand cooking.

I wouldn't buy one just because of a pandemic alone as they can be pricey, (a good buy though) but if anyone has one in the kitchen cupboard gathering dust it might come in handy for quickly batch cooking soups etc.

@BlackeyedSusan I was thinking the same! Thanks @itsnotjustthefuckingflu

Dennisreynoldsduster · 02/03/2020 03:41

Thanks for the new thread

I’m starting to feel decidedly nervy

Realised I need more dishwasher tablets and Olive
Oil, plus could do with some instant mash and I might get some extra nappies and wipes

Mentally I’m unsure how long I should be trying to cover for DS time wise. In three months we will be weaning him so I’m wondering whether to get some baby food in

Dennisreynoldsduster · 02/03/2020 03:52

One of the new cases is 25 minutes down the road from me and on frequently used bus routes into our town. Hmm it’s making me want to lock the doors and stay inside!

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 04:09

Just checking in. I've posted a load of updates on the old thread

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 04:16

#Indonesia announces 2 cases of #Coronavirus

WorriedMam2020 · 02/03/2020 04:33

One of the Herts cases is a clinician at Mount Vernon cancer centre - they have said for all patients to keep attending

Dennisreynoldsduster · 02/03/2020 04:46

Really @worriedmam2020 ?! Not sure I’d be happy with that advice
DS has his second round of jabs in two weeks and I’m not keen. I will go because he needs them but I plan on putting his rain cover on his buggy and keeping him outside until he’s called.
That doesn’t mean he won’t pick it up from the nurse who administers them of course (should she unknowingly have it). A lot of our healthcare professionals live in Harlow so I’m feeling even twitchier now
My main concern aside from DS Getting it is both DH and I getting it badly and there not being anyone to look after DS

Funkycats · 02/03/2020 05:30

Thanks you. Good call @MinesaPinotPleasenesa and fingers crossed.
Dennis that must make it feel closer!

preponderings · 02/03/2020 05:42

My main concern aside from DS Getting it is both DH and I getting it badly and there not being anyone to look after DS

Me too! I'm also working in the basis if one gets it we all will. Considering the 7 year old slept on me last night, arms around me and with her face as close to mine as she could get. No clue what the others will do if I get it badly.

Have to go to the gym today, (at hospital) which I'm not happy about. I have to go twice a week. The positive patient here is at the other hospital in the city. it's a bit close to home! Not heard a thing from the school, but maybe the DC will Bring something home when they go back today.

Dennisreynoldsduster · 02/03/2020 05:52

@Funkycats it does! I found myself opening my cupboards and organising my stash under the stairs today which made me feel calmer though. I do have one or two things to get still which I will do tomorrow but overall I’m pretty well prepped now I think. This has helped hugely with my Growing anxiety about the situation.

@preponderings i think judging by the way it spread in China that’s probably a good way to
Look at it. DS is only ten weeks which makes me feel really stressed if we both get ill but then at the same time he’s not mobile yet so in a way would be easier to care for if we were ill.

We went into town yesterday and saw people wearing masks for the first time. There was a definite air of unease about and it was much emptier than usual.
I also witnessed a scramble for hand sanitiser as a small delivery was unpacked and boots rationed it to no more than two per person!
