Prepping For A Pandemic ....9

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 01/03/2020 23:57

wheresmojo asked at the end of thread eight if other posters could keep an eye on threads filling up and start new ones if possible as she’s busy this week and may not have the time, saw thread 8 getting full so thought would start number 9 before going to bed. Thank you to ofwarren for the live updates too. I’ve copied and pasted the info that wheresmymojo has included in every thread, hopefully formatting doesn’t mess up.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar thanks Flowers

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

@IfYouCanKeepYourHead1234
Sold out now. I am all prepped, homesteaded bar hand gel!

YoursTunbridgeWells · 03/03/2020 16:42

From BBC
President Macron has announced that the government will requisition the production of face masks, and all existing stocks, in order to distribute them to health professionals and French people affected by coronavirus.

We need to do that in UK

echobench · 03/03/2020 16:42

@wheresmymojo predicted 54 by Wednesday. Looks like we’ll be exceeding that.

Just went to the shops to look for hand gel and dettol spray. Everywhere completely sold out. We have about 4 bottles between us and a big one for refilling — but I’m so thankful for this thread without which we’d have none.

IfYouCanKeepYourHead1234 · 03/03/2020 16:45

Shock That disappeared fast... sorry for false alarm!

Alwayscheerful · 03/03/2020 16:45

I have been following the thread several times a day, very grateful for all the information , as I said I am all prepped, bar hand gel. Plenty of bar soap, which are the hand gel brands you recommend, 70% + alcohol content is all I know?

TipseyTorvey · 03/03/2020 16:45

I've ordered surgical spirits and aloe vera gel. We have a few bottles of hand gel but if this is going to last a couple of months I want to be covered. However I went to the shops today and was so aware of how many things you need to touch. Even reaching for packets to check ingredients and then putting it back. Based on that I can't see how we're not all going to be exposed to it really unless we hide inside for months.

Alone07 · 03/03/2020 16:51

My year 6 dd cam home and told me they had to use sanitizer 4 times, normally would of been 3 but because of pe it was 4.
So well done to her school for taking it seriously.

AmelieTaylor · 03/03/2020 16:54

@YoursTunbridgeWells. yes, I have my first order here and had started using it, that’s how I know it doesn’t feel (or smell) the same as Clinell etc (Clinell catches in my throat, this I can barely smell/sense the alcohol)

It’s ‘CALLED’ 70% alcohol hand sanitiser but the COSHH Sheet shows 50-70%

I’m annoyed that they get away with that and even more annoyed that I didn’t check the CISHH sheet as I have with all the others because if that. I feel duped and stupid for allowing myself to be.

I want some Clinell 😢

TheElementsOfMedical · 03/03/2020 16:57

And from a technical POV I’d like to know why liberal use of 50% woukdnt be good enough? Or rather that makes 70% the magic number.

The virus has a lipid-based envelope, and you need at least 60+% alcohol to disrupt it. Think about how you can't dissolve oil with water.

VivaLeBeaver · 03/03/2020 16:57

Just found what I think is surgical spirit on top shelf in utility room, will send dh up the ladder to double check later...might be white spirit not surgical.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 03/03/2020 16:58

I feel better having watched the WHO update.

It comes across as very transparent, and the info is coming direct from the people with the scientific or epidemiological background, rather a mangled version from a politician to a journalist.

If they don't know the answer they say that. Which I find refreshing and reassuring.

The cooperation between countries sounds good. They are helping Iran and the Chinese experience is helpful.

They say some Chinese provinces have gone from a few cases, to cluster, to full on overload, then back to single traceable cases.

They said the different stages are not progressive, you can be mitigating, researching and containing all at the same time.

He emphasized that the outbreak in each country is different and so measures will need to be tailored to the situation. They are saying that social distancing is not needed when community transmission is not established.

He said that the social distancing will defend on acceptance in the country and that will vary according to local factors.

There are issues with PPE which they are addressing, and with drugs.

The serological studies are being done in 25 countries, data to be shared to inform on infection rates and milder cases.

Def worth a watch.

Heartyhooker · 03/03/2020 17:01

Ds1's form teacher has been making them wash hands on form period , thankfully they are in a science lab.
I work in a care home and we are now keeping the doors locked with signs on for visitors to consider if they are a risk to clients and to wait for staff to let them in and escort them to the hand washing station. Beginning to feel very real

Effieray · 03/03/2020 17:05

Listening to Dr John Campbell's most recent video and he mentions the Spanish Flu 102 years ago. Made me reflect on how people in 100 years time will look back at this period in time. 😕

YoursTunbridgeWells · 03/03/2020 17:08

@AmelieTaylor Me too. Totally duped. I tried to email them but because I checked out as a guest they won't seem to respond.

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 17:08

Italy reports 466 new cases of coronavirus and 27 new deaths, raising total to 2,502 cases and 79 dead

Effieray · 03/03/2020 17:16

Correct me if I'm wrong...

Would antibacterial hand wipes be as useful as hand gel? They're still in stock in most places and good brands are high in alcohol content. Obviously not as good for the environment, but would work?

Whatthefoxgoingon · 03/03/2020 17:20

@ofwarren

Shit. That’s really bad news from Italy. Shock

RedLentilYellowLentil · 03/03/2020 17:21

I love the idea that we may all end up washing our hands in neat vodka. What next, absinthe gargles? Wink

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 17:21

They probably will work Effie but they will make your hands sore. They have more ingredients in than hand gel.

Effieray · 03/03/2020 17:24

Thanks ofwarren. Hand gel makes my hands sore enough already.

LightofMine · 03/03/2020 17:24

NHS declares national major incident over coronavirus Shock.

EliK · 03/03/2020 17:25

My DS came home from school and said the teacher gave them a talk on handwashing but he claims they never got a chance to wash them. What's the point?Maybe they'll start tomorrow... (if not, I'll say something).

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 03/03/2020 17:26

That is probably to release extra money and resources.

Effieray · 03/03/2020 17:26

This is NGS definition of a major incident emergency ☹️

Under Section 1 of the CCA 2004 an “emergency” means
“(a) an event or situation which threatens serious damage to human welfare in a place in the United Kingdom;
(b) an event or situation which threatens serious damage to the environment of a place in the United Kingdom;
(c) war, or terrorism, which threatens serious damage to the security of the United Kingdom”.

QueSera · 03/03/2020 17:27

Italy reports 466 new cases of coronavirus and 27 new deaths, raising total to 2,502 cases and 79 dead

This is such sad news. Sad
These figures show a 3% fatality rate. Let's hope it averages out much lower over time.
Has anyone read anything on why Italy became and remains such an epicentre for the virus?
