Prepping For A Pandemic ....9

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 01/03/2020 23:57

wheresmojo asked at the end of thread eight if other posters could keep an eye on threads filling up and start new ones if possible as she’s busy this week and may not have the time, saw thread 8 getting full so thought would start number 9 before going to bed. Thank you to ofwarren for the live updates too. I’ve copied and pasted the info that wheresmymojo has included in every thread, hopefully formatting doesn’t mess up.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar thanks Flowers

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Yes, Tinnednut surely it could only be helpful to the ‘war effort’ like Digging for Victory.

Dig in for Victory?

Neome · 03/03/2020 15:34

SuckingDieselFella is anxious because their friend is ill. Let’s have some compassion while fully appreciating offwarren’s hard work updating us.

Perhaps they are feeling whipped up by information in a way people who’ve been prepping for a while aren’t.

Puppycorn · 03/03/2020 15:35

@Neome I thought the same too and I also thought of this - The schools can have temporary arrangements and update their daily lesson schedules so if need be children can be educated using open source resources and also be kept busy if in self isolation. I think this “Unlike flu, this is not affecting kids” is an understatement from the government. They can still be carriers, they can infect their immune suppressed siblings, adults, the elderly and the high risk groups including the staffs and teachers.

planningaheadtoday · 03/03/2020 15:37

@IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying @SuckingDieselFella

We have had calm, polite, sensible, supportive and accurate discussion
for almost 10,000 posts. This thread has been unlike others and hopefully will remain.

No one is scaremongering, this is a very real threat to many with underlying health conditions and elderly vulnerable family.

@ofwarren is doing a brilliant job. Our thread voted several 1000 posts ago and the consensus was that we wanted this accurate information in a place that was easily accessible.

Newcomers please be respectful.

RedLentilYellowLentil · 03/03/2020 15:39

Thank you once again @ofwarren for the work you put in to keeping us up-to-date with latest developments from around the world.

In other news, I am ShockShockShock that the loos in the HoP don't all have soap! What a foul lot they are.

JustMeAndMyTins · 03/03/2020 15:41

Yes, bloody ofwarren and her fucking #updates

Who does she think she is helping us get #prepared for a #highly contagious #novel virus #possible pandemic with #highly accurate #regular updates when her #backstory means she has more reason than most to give a lot of fucks what's happening.

I'm more that happy with the frenzied whipping if that's what you want to call our thread.

@IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying, I need that two-hand 'preach' emoji!

@ofwarren I appreciate you! And I remember that you gave your sources back at the beginning.

@NatoPMT Thinking of you.

@Legoandloldolls cash-and-carry purchases are the best! Haha! Grin

From Guardian:

"Prof Chris Whitty, chief medical officer, has given greater detail about the 12 new cases announced earlier today.

Eight patients had recently travelled from Italy, one from Germany, one from Singapore, one from Japan and one from Iran. The patients are from London, Hampshire, Northamptonshire, Bury, Wirral, Greater Manchester, Humberside and Kent. All are being investigated and contact tracing has begun.

The total number of confirmed cases in England is now 48 (one previously reported positive case was retested and found to be negative). Following previously reported confirmed cases in Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland, the total number of UK cases is 51"

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 15:47

Included in the above figures are 12 further cases in England.

Following previously reported confirmed cases in Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland, the total number of UK cases is 51.

All are being investigated and contact tracing has begun. t.co/XyzmAWvAl8

WHO is holding a press conference on coronavirus. Watch live: t.co/jPqHTt2iEt

YoursTunbridgeWells · 03/03/2020 16:01

I really don't think their exact locations matter other than county until the point where we have a cluster of several cases in one places - not just a family cluster plus a couple of mates like in the Brighton case but where the cluster grows quickly. Then people need to be advised so they can make informed decisions about whether they should WFH or children should not be in school.
The trouble is by the time you are told there are kids in X school with it. Those kids will have been spreading the virus for potentially a couple of weeks.
Ultimately I don't think anyone can avoid this virus. If you don't get it in the main wave, chaances are you'll leave the house beacuse you have to - maybe urgent medical appointment, maybe some other pressing reason. It's all died back, you're extra cautious anyway and somehow you get it.
Everyone needs to be mentally prepared to get the virus. I am absolutely bricking it as I really don't know whether I could sruvive double pneumonia. But I'm not spending the next 1-2 years literally locked up in my house until there is an effective vaccine that jo Public is allowed to receive. Likelihood is the vaccine will be for adults first and at risk groups (once they've done BoJo and any politicians of course) - likely the elderly first and there will be ridiuclous demand for it.

tryingtoprep · 03/03/2020 16:01

Wishing your friend well @NatoPMT

The catch it, bin it, tissue advice. People should be told where to bin it. I assume it's best to keep the tissue on you (in a bag) instead of an (uncovered, and often overflowing) public bin? I can imagine lots of people will just throw theirs on the floor.

I'm assuming still no information on where the new cases are?

I'm writing to my MP. I want to see more working from home where it's possible. He's over 60 and it made me wonder whether MPs will continue to do surgeries. Bit hypocritical if they don't.

Humberside doesn't exist. So could be north Lincolnshire or East Yorkshire.

says he does not expect the Coronavirus economic shock to be as bad as the Global Financial Crisis of 2008

Sorry, missed the update on locations. Thsnks for that.

HAND GEL ISSUE

I’ve been knocking myself out getting 70% alcohol, but I was struggling to find much that came in a bigger size than 50ml that actually stated 70%. Then someone on here suggested Gompels (sorry can’t remember who or which thread now)

I ordered several 400 ml bottles of their ‘70% alcohol hand sanitiser’ But it didn’t feel right compared to the Clinell etc

So I looked at their COSH sheet and it says 50-70% alcohol

I don’t know how they get away with putting 70% on the bottle.

They have offered to collect the ones I have and I can probably cancel the order for the others. (You have to get it on account and so I offered to get a few bottles for some good friends).

Problem is I can’t find any 70% (or even the 60% they’re saying us ok now). And on top of my own needs, I have friends. counting on me to get some ☹️

I don’t know whether to keep the order I’ve got and hope it’s higher than 60% (as it says 50-70%) or just assume it’s not good enough and cancel the order.

No point in having it if it’s not good enough

But I can’t find any 60% in stock

I wish I’d ordered another brand earlier
on (but ironically I was wary of ordering unknown brands, from unknown suppliers online) instead of hanging out for some Clinell to come back stock!! Arghhhhh

WWYD?!

Is anyone watching the WHO live conference ?
I'm on my way to parents evening and missing it.

RhubarbTea · 03/03/2020 16:07

I'm watching. He's talking about how it's not just like flu - in both good and bad ways.
